Parthiv Backs KL Rahul To Score More: 'Often Seen Him Start A Series Well But..'
Last Updated: Parthiv Patel praised KL Rahul's performance in the Test series against England, scoring 508 runs in eight innings with two centuries and two fifties, India's second-highest. Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel shared his views on KL Rahul's consistent performance and his record at The Oval, where the fifth and final Test of the series against England will be held from July 31 to August 4. KL Rahul has been in excellent form in England, scoring 508 runs in eight innings at an average of 72.57, including two centuries and two fifties. He is India's second-highest run-scorer in the series. This has been his most successful Test series to date, and in the absence of star batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rahul has stepped up as the senior statesman of the team. Speaking on 'Match Centre Live', JioStart expert Parthiv Patel praised Rahul, saying, 'I think the way KL Rahul has batted throughout this series has been impressive. In the past, we've often seen him start a series well but struggle to maintain that form. This time, however, he has shown remarkable consistency and batted with great responsibility. He also enjoys batting at The Oval — remember, in 2018, he scored a brilliant hundred there alongside Rishabh Pant. So, I'm sure there's more to come from KL Rahul." What KL Rahul Has Done On The Tour Of England? Rahul is now chasing his third century of the series and his fifth in England. He could become the first Indian opener to score three centuries in a single series in England. He is also chasing Sunil Gavaskar's record of 19 fifty-plus scores in SENA countries, having already registered 12 such scores. On Saturday, he became only the second Asian batter after Gavaskar to score over 500 runs in a series in England. To date, Rahul has scored 10 Test centuries, nine of which have come outside India, with seven in SENA countries. He is just 13 runs away from his eighth SENA century. Despite his success in overseas conditions, which is a hallmark of a great Indian batsman, Rahul has struggled with consistency throughout his career, scoring 3,765 runs in 62 Tests and 109 innings at an average of 36.20. He has 10 centuries and 19 fifties, with a highest score of 199. (With inputs from ANI) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Gill silences critics with runs, results
When Shubman Gill was announced as the new skipper of the Indian team for the England series, questions were instantly raised if the prince's ascension to the throne was premature. He's just 25 years old and his performances previously in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries weren't encouraging. Shouldn't he be given more time to find his feet while a senior like KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah or Rishabh Pant could have done the job? Won't the weight of captaining a transitional Indian team in a punishing place like England, where the visitors have won a Test series just thrice, weigh him down? Will the physical and emotional toil of leading in a gruelling five-match series affect his batting — he averaged 36.57 before this series — which is still a work in progress? Well, the soft-spoken but hard-nosed Gill has answered most of those questions in emphatic fashion, indicating he's one of those who can thrive personally in leadership roles. Firstly, the batting where Gill has smashed some long-standing records and is on course to obliterate a few more when he takes strike in the final Test at The Oval starting July 31. Prior to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the Punjabi didn't have a single century in SENA countries — he hasn't played a Test yet in New Zealand. In fact, out of his five tons before landing here, all had come in the subcontinent — four in India and one in Bangladesh.

13 Batting Records Shubman Gill Can Break During 5th India-England Test
Gill, who has 722 runs to his name in four matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, will lead the Indian team in the fifth Test at The Oval from July 31 to August 4. The fifth and final Test of the ongoing five-match Test series between India and England will be played at The Oval in London. During the red-ball match scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 4, Indian men's cricket team captain Shubman Gill would like to maintain his good show with the bat and come up with another big performance. In the four matches played so far, with the help of one double century and three centuries, he has scored a total of 722 runs. Gill has already broken multiple batting records for India in his first series as captain, and the 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab will have a chance to break many more batting records in the fifth and final Test as well. Here's a look at the list of batting records Shubman Gill can break during the fifth India-England Test at The Oval: If Gill manages to score at least one run at The Oval, then he will break Garry Sobers record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries by an away captain. During the 1966 England-West Indies Test series in England, Sobers played five matches as captain and scored 722 runs. On the other hand, Gill also has 722 runs to his name in the four matches of the ongoing series. If Gill scores 11 runs, then he will break Sunil Gavaskar's record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India as captain. During the India-West Indies Test series in 1978-79, Gavaskar played six matches as captain and amassed a total of 732 runs. Most runs in a Test series by Indian captain Gill needs 31 runs to break Graham Gooch's record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played between India and England. Gooch played three Tests against India in 1990 and scored 752 runs. The legendary batter was also the captain of the English team in that series. Most runs in a India-England Test series As of now the overall record of scoring the most runs in a Test series for India is in the name of the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. In 1971, Gavaskar played four Tests against the West Indies team and scored a total of 774 runs. Gill needs to score at least 53 runs in the fifth Test to break that record. If Gill scores at least 78 runs in the fifth Test, then he will become the first cricketer from Asia to score 800 runs in a Test series. Most runs in a Test series by Asian batters The overall record of scoring the most runs in a Test series by a captain is in the name of Don Bradman. In the 1936-37 Ashes series in Australia, Bradman played five matches and in nine innings scored a total of 810 runs. Gill is 89 runs short of breaking that 88-year-old record. If Gill scores at least 89 runs in the Oval Test, then he will also break Bradman's record of scoring the most runs (810) in a debut Test series as captain. As of now he is tied with Sunil Gavaskar (twice) and Virat Kohli, who also scored four centuries each. Most 100s in a Test series for India A century in the fifth Test will also help Gill become the first Indian Test captain to score a century at The Oval. Shubman Gill Equals Gary Sobers Test Record, Needs 1 Run To...
Last Updated: Shubman Gill has proven his credentials in Test cricket with a memorable show on India's ongoing tour of England. India captain Shubman Gill is in the midst of a breakthrough series of his Test career that has seen him score truckload of runs. In his debut series as India Test captain, Gill has stepped up his game with four centuries from eight innings including a magnificent double ton against England. With a Test still remaining in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill can create several records. The 25-year-old on Sunday, scored a memorable hundred which was pivotal to India securing a hard-fought draw in Manchester after playing catchup for the majority of the match. He scored 103 off 238 and stitched a 188-run partnership with KL Rahul (90) to help the visitors recover from 0/2 after England had taken a huge 311-run lead. Gill thus drew level with the legendary Gary Sobers' 59-year-old record for the most runs scored by a visiting captain during a series in SENA countries. Sobers scored 722 from eight innings of five Tests during West Indies' 1966 tour of England. The legendary allrounder scored three centuries and two fifties on the tour. Gill has so far made 722 runs from eight innings of four Tests and needs 1 run to go past Sobers record. Most runs by a visiting captain in a series in SENA countries Overall, the record for the most runs in a single series by a captain is held by legendary Don Bradman of Australia who racked up 810 runs in 9 innings of a five-Test series against England at home in 1936-37. Gill is joint-third in this list. Gill's Sensational Show Prior to the start of England tour, there questions were raised over Gill's middling record in Test cricket. All five of his Test centuries before leaving for England came at home. The youngster has addressed the criticism with aplomb peeling four centuries with his overall Test average now in the early fourties. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill's historic 4th ton as captain, Ravindra Jadeja's all-round feat at Old Trafford and more
India, led by captain Shubman Gill, batted with great character to secure a hard-fought draw in the fourth test against England on Sunday and keep the series alive going into the final game. After losing two wickets before they had scored a run in their second innings, India batted for over five sessions for the loss of two more wickets to end the final day on 425-4 at Old Trafford. A courageous hundred from Gill — his fourth of the series — and dogged unbeaten centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar gave the home crowd little to cheer on a tough day for England. A closely-fought series remains at 2-1 to England and the hosts must avoid defeat in the final test at the Oval in London, starting on Thursday, to win it. Here are some key stats from a gritty effort at Old Trafford that leaves India hoping, and England a bit frustrated. 1 – Shubman Gill became the first Test captain to record four centuries in an away series. Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar are the only other captains to record four tons in a series. Jacques Kallis, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Mohammed Yousuf the only other batters to record the feat in the 21st century. 6/13 – Of the 127 Tests in history where teams batting second have earned a 300+ innings lead, only 13 matches have ended in a draw. India have converted 6 of those matches into draws after conceding 300-plus leads batting first. 417 – KL Rahul and Shubman Gill faced 417 deliveries during their 3rd-wicket stand, the longest recorded partnership by an Indian pair for any wicket in England. 2/40* – Only the second time in 40 Tests in the Bazball era that England have played a drawn Test, following the 2023 Ashes Test also in Manchester (Day 5 washed out). 1 – Ravindra Jadeja became the first Indian to record 1000 runs and 30 wickets in an away country and the third overall after Wilfred Rhodes (in AUS) and Garry Sobers (in ENG). Jadeja is also the first Indian batter to record two centuries at No. 6 or lower in a SENA Test with his second ton in England. 1543 – India have faced the most balls in a match in the World Test Championship. Incidentally, England are the only team to bowl 1500 deliveries (thrice) in a match in the WTC. Lalith Kalidas is a Senior Sub-Editor with the sports team of The Indian Express.
