Over 200 people shifted to relief camps, 93 houses damaged as heavy showers, thunderstorms hit Tripura

Over 200 people were rendered homeless and at least 93 houses were damaged as thunderstorms and heavy showers lashed different parts of Tripura in the past 24 hours, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said Friday evening. As per an SEOC release, among the 93 houses, 26 were severely damaged and 67 were partly damaged. A total of 207 people from 57 families were shifted to four relief camps in Khowai and West Tripura districts. So far, there are no reports of human deaths or injury owing to the showers. However, a female elephant died at the Mungiakami Rural Development block in Khowai district. Several roads at Longtraivalley in Dhalai district, Jirania and Mohanpur in West Tripura district, Jampuijala in Sepahijala district, and Karbook, Silacherri, Gomati and Sabroom in South Tripura district were blocked after trees fell during thunderstorms. However, as per the latest reports, all major rivers in the state, including Gomati, Muhuri, and Feni, are flowing below the danger mark. 'Considering the experience from last year, we have already formed rescue teams. As per a report of the Drinking Water and Sanitation department, the water level is still below the danger mark in the Bishalgarh subdivision. If there is more rainfall, then it may cross the danger level. But we want to assure the people that the administration is prepared fully for the situation,' said a district official in Sepahijala. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said, 'I have already spoken to disaster management officials. I have asked them to keep a watch on all places in the state. Last time, we made arrangements for flood victims. If the situation deteriorates, we shall surely take more initiatives.' The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) in some places, and extremely heavy rainfall at a few places in North Tripura and Unakoti districts. Squally wind with a speed of 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph is also likely in the state over the next 24 hours. The floods last year cost 38 lives apart from affecting over 17 lakh people, and causing estimated damages worth Rs 15,000 crore. Over two lakh people were shifted to 889 relief camps across the state as flood waters submerged large tracts in all eight districts.

As many as 72 houses were damaged in the Khowai district of Tripura Sunday amid heavy rain and thunderstorm, with no reports of any deaths or injury till the latest reports came in. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), 64 houses were partly damaged, and 8 were severely damaged in the Khowai district. SEOC said an inquiry is underway, and the financial assistance to be provided to the affected persons is in process. Meanwhile, the Meteorological department predicted a partly cloudy sky with the occurrence of light to moderate rain or thundershower in some areas in the next 24 hours. The MeT department has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind speeds of 40-50 kmph at one or two places in the districts. In April, more than 500 houses were damaged, and two people were reportedly injured in heavy gusts of winds, storms, and heavy showers which lashed different parts of Tripura. Last year, 38 people were killed and over 17 lakh residents were affected in the devastating floods as the state also incurred an estimated damage worth Rs. 15,000 crore across different sectors, including road connectivity, power transmission, flood management infrastructure, domestic households and public infrastructure, livestock, agriculture, etc. Over 2 lakh people were shifted to 889 relief camps across the state last year as flood water submerged large tracts of land in all eight districts. The Sepahijala, Gomati, West Tripura, South Tripura, and Khowai districts were the worst affected.

Chennai: As part of a broader civil defence initiative recommended by the Union ministry of home affairs, Tamil Nadu will conduct disaster preparedness drills at major dams and water reservoirs across the state this week. The focus is to assess readiness in the event of emergencies. Officials said the drills will include scenarios such as emergency replacement of damaged water supply connections, rupture or sabotage of main water pipelines, and the potential consequences of such disruptions. "Other mock exercises will cover drowning incidents, fire rescue, air-raid siren response, and emergency medical protocols near major water bodies," a senior official said, adding that these drills will not affect regular operations or public access. The public has been urged to remain calm and cooperate if they observe emergency vehicles or personnel near dams and State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) and District Emergency Operations Centres (DEOCs) will oversee the exercises, with planning underway by district collectors and the Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner. Instructions have been issued to identify high-priority locations and begin groundwork by Sunday. Locations for the water-based drills will be announced in the coming civil defence efforts are part of a larger series of coordinated drills that began last week across Tamil Nadu. Nagpur: Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. ( MahaMetro ), Nagpur, has been officially appointed as the project implementation agency for the upcoming State Institute of Disaster Management (SIDM), to be built in Nagpur at a cost of Rs187.73 crore. The state govt recently cleared the proposal, giving MahaMetro the task of planning, executing, and overseeing the construction of the new facility, which is designed to be Maharashtra's central hub for disaster preparedness and response, as stated in a GR released in the last week of institute will be established on a 10-acre plot within the Maharashtra Airport Development Company's jurisdiction in Mihan.
