Boeing Just Supercharged Global Internet With New Satellites

Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shares are trading slightly higher in the premarket session on Wednesday after two new Boeing-built satellites rocketed into space last night to bring faster internet service across the globe. Two new mid‑Earth orbit satellites, built by Boeing, successfully lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on Tuesday evening, expanding global connectivity for SES users. The duo-designated the ninth and tenth in the O3b mPOWER series, separated from the Falcon 9 roughly two hours after its 5:12 p.m. EDT launch. Boeing engineers in El Segundo, Calif., performed an initial round of health diagnostics on the satellite will fire its xenon propulsion system to complete a 130‑day transfer to an 8,000 km altitude, where they will join the first eight O3b mPOWER craft already serving customers worldwide. As more nodes come online, the network's capacity and resilience grow. Alongside the inaugural six, these additions bolster performance for telcos, cruise lines, airlines, NATO and allied governments. 'We designed O3b mPOWER so each additional satellite beyond the first six boosts capacity, performance, and resilience,' said Michelle Parker, Boeing's vice president of Space Mission Systems. The company credits its refined production methods for the program's speed and efficiency. SES's O3b mPOWER array entered commercial service in April 2024, delivering high‑throughput, low‑latency links that rival terrestrial internet, covering nearly 95 percent of the global population from MEO. Boeing hardened the O3b beamforming technology for military applications on Wideband Global SATCOM and Evolved Strategic SATCOM projects for the U.S. Space Force, enhancing jamming resistance and cybersecurity features. With the two latest satellites now in orbit, Boeing and its partners continue to push boundaries in space‑based broadband, setting the stage for future expansions of the O3b constellation. SpaceX launches two new O3b mPOWER satellites for SES

The remaining three O3b mPOWER satellites are currently being manufactured and are scheduled for launch in 2026. SES has announced the launch of two additional O3b mPOWER satellites aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 5:12 pm local time. The newly launched satellites will enhance global coverage and increase capacity for SES’s second-generation medium Earth orbit (MEO) network, O3b mPOWER. In operation since 2024, the O3b mPOWER system has been delivering high-performance connectivity to a range of customers across mobility, government, enterprise and cloud sectors worldwide. The two new satellites join eight others already in orbit, providing scalable services from tens of megabits to multiple gigabits per second to users anywhere on the globe. Three more satellites are currently in production and are scheduled to launch in 2026. Once the full constellation is deployed by 2027, SES expects a threefold increase in total system capacity, further strengthening its global service offerings. SES CEO Adel Al-Saleh said: 'I’m proud of our SES team and partners for continuously pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in space to bring critical connectivity where it matters most. Over the past year, our O3b mPOWER services have been transforming industries and empowering our key customers including telco operators, cruise lines, airlines, NATO, the Government of Luxembourg, the Government of United States and many other allied governments. With this launch we continue adding incremental capacity to our initial O3b mPOWER constellation, strengthening our MEO network and delivering high throughput and predictable low latency services at scale.'

David Broadbent appointed CEO of Europe's SES Space & Defense

Luxembourg-based European satellite company SES announced on Tuesday the appointment of David Broadbent as president and CEO of its Space & Defense Organization. He previously held a similar position at Intelsat, which SES acquired on July 17. Broadbent will lead the merged government and defence divisions of SES and Intelsat, which collectively operate over 100 satellites across geostationnary, medium earth and low earth orbits, positioning SES as a key European competitor to U.S.-based Starlink alongside French peer Eutelsat . "Our focus moving forward is to harness the combined strengths of our people, capabilities, and technology to deliver mission-driven outcomes for our government mission partners," Broadbent said in a statement. "As a unified team, we are uniquely positioned to provide a secure and resilient multi-orbit strategy that advance national security objectives, protect sovereignty, and ensure uninterrupted access to critical communication infrastructure," he added. SES expects to generate 1.8 billion euros ($2.1 billion) in annual operating profit, and to increase revenues by a low to mid-single digit percentage per year to 2028. "This stronger financial profile is supported by a combined contract backlog exceeding 8 billion euros, providing clear visibility into future revenue streams," it said in a statement announcing the merger. The announcement comes as European nations accelerate efforts to bolster independence in defence and satellite technology amid geopolitical tensions with Russia and evolving U.S. foreign policy priorities. Eutelsat recently received a 750 million euros capital infusion from the French government in June, followed by a 163 million euros boost from Britain.

SpaceX launch photos: Falcon 9 launches SES O3b mPOWER satellites from Cape Canaveral, Florida

After a waning-second scrub the previous day, SpaceX successfully launched a pair of SES O3b mPOWER satellites into medium-Earth orbit on Tuesday, July 22, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The Falcon 9 lifted off at 5:12 p.m. After soaring skyward due east, the rocket's first-stage booster landed aboard SpaceX's drone ship Just Read the Instructions in the Atlantic Ocean. The Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron had only predicted a paltry 20% chance of "go for launch" weather, citing cumulus clouds, lightning and surface electric fields.
