Contribute now New Delhi: Two days after a video circulated showing a young man purportedly of Indian nationality being restrained by the authorities apparently at the Newark airport in New Jersey, India has raised the issue with the US embassy in Delhi but has not been given the details of the situation, officials said on Tuesday (June 10). The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has 'formally raised the matter with the US embassy in New Delhi', while the Indian embassy in Washington and the consulate in New York 'have been in touch' with American authorities to ascertain the details of the incident, official sources said. However they have 'so far have not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which' the young man 'was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination', they added. 'We continue to follow up on the matter.' Kunal Jain, an X user who has said he is an entrepreneur and a US national of Indian origin, posted photos and videos on Sunday of a young man being restrained and pinned to the ground by the authorities at what he said was the Newark Liberty International Airport on the outskirts of New York City. The young man's identity remains unknown. Jain claimed that he could be heard saying in Haryanvi-accented Hindi that he was not insane despite the authorities there trying to portray him as such. Among those restraining the man were seen wearing gear labelled as that of the police department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs airports, seaports, bridges and tunnels that connect the two states. Jain also claimed that the young man was set to board the same flight as him from Newark to New Delhi but that the 'pilot stepped out, saw the situation and refused to allow [him] to board'. Reposting Jain's photos, Congress MP and communications general secretary Jairam Ramesh earlier on Tuesday accused the Modi government of 'failing to protect the honour of India and Indians'. Also referring to US President Donald Trump's claims that Washington mediated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan following their four-day-long military conflict on May 10, Ramesh wrote on X that Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'has not been able to summon the courage to speak – either on the ceasefire or on the atrocities being perpetrated against Indians in the US'. Modi ought to speak to Trump and call for American intervention in 'the atrocities happening against Indians and the fear that has gripped lakhs of Indian students in America', he added. The airport incident occurs against the backdrop of hundreds of international students and graduates in the US, Indian citizens among them, reporting having their visas revoked by the Trump administration. Some of them have approached the courts for relief. The MEA, which said it was 'supporting' Indian students in America who were facing issues with their student visas and reached out to India's missions, had earlier said that Indian citizens abroad must comply with local laws. 'Will not tolerate illegal entry': US embassy amid Indian student handcuffing row; warns on visa misuse

Image credits: X/@SONOFINDIA US embassy in India on Tuesday reiterated its stance on illegal immigration and said that it will not tolerate violation of any laws or visa abuse. In a social media post on X, the official handle of US embassy said, "The United States continues to welcome legitimate travelers to our country. However, there is no right to visit the United States," "We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of US law," it added. This comes a day after an Indian student was handcuffed and pinned to the floor at an airport in the United States before he was deported. A video was shared by X user Kunal Jain, an Indian-American social entrepreneur who writes books in Hindi, and recently relocated to India. According to Singh, the incident occurred at Newark Airport. He tagged the Indian Embassy, as well as external affairs minister S Jaishankar, seeking help for the boy. "I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy," he posted on his social media handle. As per the ministry of external affairs, the administration of US President Donald Trump, since assuming power in January, has deported as many as 1,080 Indian nationals from America. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Meanwhile a massive protest was held in Las Angeles over US President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. Protesters set self-driving cars ablaze, blocked the 101 freeway, and clashed with law enforcement late into Sunday night, leaving parts of the city scorched and on edge. The flashpoint came after Trump took the extraordinary step of deploying the National Guard to California without the consent of the state's governor, an act not seen in decades. More than 300 troops arrived over the weekend, with 2,000 authorised and 500 US Marines on standby. Meanwhile, California governor Gavin Newsom told MSNBC that he will file suit on Monday against the Trump administration and called its order "an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act."

I could recognise his accent where he was saying 'में पागल नहीं हूँ , ये लोग मुझे पागल साबित करने में लगे हुए हे' — Kunal Jain (@SONOFINDIA) June 8, 2025 He also said that similar cases have been happening recently. 'These children get their visas and get on a flight in the morning. For some reason, they are unable to explain the reason for their visit to the immigration authorities and are sent back on the evening flight tied up like criminals. Every day 3-4 such cases are happening. There have been more such cases in the last few days,' he wrote. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He urged the Indian Embassy in the US to look into the incident and help the student. He also tagged the Indian Embassy and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his post. In an article for The New Indian Express, Jain recalled that the man, who appeared to be a student, said in Hindi, 'Main pagal nahi hoon… yeh log mujhe pagal sabit karna chahte hain' ('I'm not mad… they're trying to prove I'm mentally unstable'). This poor kids parent won't know what's happening to him. @IndianEmbassyUS @DrSJaishankar he was to be boarded last night in the same flight with me but he never got boarded. Someone needs to find out what's going on with him at New Jersey authorities. I found him disoriented. — Kunal Jain (@SONOFINDIA) June 8, 2025 He added that the man looked frightened and confused, and his desperate plea to be understood was deeply disturbing. What was the reason? Here's what the witness said In a conversation with CNN-News18, Jain said that even terrorists are not treated publicly like that in the United States. He said, 'I remember exactly, a pilot came out and said he couldn't take the risk of bringing this boy onto the plane because he might be a threat to other passengers. Now think about it, all of this was happening in his head… I mean, I felt so bad.' Regarding a possible reason why the security forces acted the way they did, Kunal said they believed the student was agitated. 'So they felt that in order to control him, they had to force him down, pin him to the ground. My only point is that there were enough Indians there. They could have called the Indian embassy, they could have provided legal help, they could have brought in a counsellor, or even a linguistic counsellor who could speak his language.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He further said, 'Nowadays, if you don't have a visa, they don't allow you in. So he was allowed at the entry, but probably interviewed there.' After the entire incident, he said, 'I boarded the plane and asked one of the hostesses. She told me, 'We see three to four such cases every day.'' 'If people do not retaliate or become violent, then they are sent back to India. But if, for any reason, they become aggressive, this is what happens,' he said. Trump administration's crackdown on international students This incident comes at a time when the US government has stepped up its action against international students , with many visas being cancelled without warning. The reasons behind the deportations have differed, from joining pro-Palestine protests to minor traffic offences, leaving many students caught in legal trouble and uncertainty. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, since Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, the US has deported around 1,080 Indian nationals. The latest case has also reminded many of earlier deportations that caused public outrage. In February, a video released by the US Border Patrol showed over 100 Indians being sent back, with their hands cuffed and legs chained.

The incident marks one of the many atrocities being faced by Indian students who are fearful and unsure of their future in America. Live Events — SONOFINDIA (@SONOFINDIA) Many people commented on Jain's post, condemning him for posting the incident and not staying around to help the young student. "So easy to write stories. If you were that concerned why didn't you get him released?" wrote a person. Others questioned the reason why Indian students went to America for higher studies in the first place with the high cost and low safety the country ensures. "Now US is not your dream land. It has become hell for you." "Indian students must seriously rethink studying in the US. It's no longer the dreamland we were sold. The reality today is stark; rising violence, internal strife, racial discrimination, and institutions overrun with woke nonsense," wrote another. A person marked how the way the student was being dealt with in public was not justified, writing, "Irrespective of his status, situation, language which you might not understand or you might not convince with his answers, totally agree. But not a way to treat in front of everyone like this." Another shared how being deported might just be a good thing for the student with India's rising development. "Deported to India? Why should he be sad? I mean he is going back to a rising superpower!" While most social media users were offended on behalf of the students, others asked if he had legally migrated to the States. "Sorry but he has an illegal status. He should be deported. He can come back to his country. There is no shortage of dreams here."

Video Claims To Show Indian Man Handcuffed, Pinned To Floor At US Airport: "Treated Like A Criminal"

A disturbing video of an Indian man being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by authorities at Newark Airport in New Jersey has gone viral on social media. Kunal Jain, an Indian-American entrepreneur who shared the video, claimed that the incident occurred on June 7, when the student was scheduled to board a flight but was left behind and later deported. Mr Jain shared the footage on X, describing the treatment as "deeply inhumane" and a "human tragedy". He expressed outrage and helplessness over the incident, stating that the student was "crying, treated like a criminal" and had come to the US "chasing dreams, not causing harm". The entrepreneur has called upon the Indian Embassy in the US to investigate the matter and provide assistance to the student. He also tagged the Indian Embassy and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, seeking help for the student. "I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy," the tweet read. Here's the video: I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night— handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy. @IndianEmbassyUS #immigrationraids — Kunal Jain (@SONOFINDIA) June 8, 2025 Mr Jain further stated that the student in the video appeared to be speaking Haryanavi. According to him, there have been multiple similar cases of Indians being deported recently due to their inability to explain the purpose of their visit to immigration authorities. Mr Jain noted that these individuals often receive their visas and board flights without issue, only to be detained and deported the same day, sometimes being restrained like criminals. "This poor kid's parent won't know what's happening to him. @IndianEmbassyUS @DrSJaishankar He was to be boarded last night on the same flight with me, but he never got boarded. Someone needs to find out what's going on with him with the New Jersey authorities. I found him disoriented," he added. NDTV is not able to verify the authenticity of the claims made by the user. The video has sparked widespread outrage and concern over the treatment of Indians abroad, with many demanding official intervention from the Indian government. However, some also questioned the circumstances surrounding the event. One user wrote, "Handcuffed? May be wrong, but did he come the right way? If not, then what is wrong if he is being deported?" Another commented, "You are not alone, most of the NRIs are not helpless, right word is useless when it comes to stand together. We are so selfish, in the next coming years we will feel the heat cos of our attitude." A third said, "What do u mean by he's not been able to explain to the US authorities. If he can't speak English, how did he clear his exams? What kind of courses was he going to take?" A fourth user added, "He was questioned for 5-6 hours, also an Indian chap called in to converse, but he failed to give correct answers, yes, he shouldn't be treated in sucha manner, rather escorting him and calling the embassy or consular but it seems they've a different set of rules."
