Cargo vessel flags new chapter in Varanasi–WB water transport
Varanasi: Homi Bhabha cargo vessel added a new chapter in water transport development between Varanasi and West Bengal on Sunday morning, departing from the multi-modal terminal with a consignment of 300 tonnes of cement and 100 tonnes white putty to Shahabganj (Jharkhand) terminal. IWAI officials said after the vessel reached Sahibganj terminal, the goods would be sent to various destinations including Siliguri, Malda Town and Krishnanagar in West Bengal by road. They termed development of the water transport system a significant milestone in development of entrepreneurs. Secretary of ministry of transport, T K Ramachandran and divisional commissioner S Rajalingam, along with Varanasi district magistrate Satyendra Kumar, Chandauli district magistrate, Chandra Mohan Garg and other officials of both districts, flagged off the vessel to transport cement and putty brought from Katni, Madhya Pradesh and loaded with the help of a German crane. of Multi-modal terminal director Sanjeev Kumar and deputy director R C Pandey, were also present. After assuming charge in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ensured acceleration of the pace of work on developing Varanasi-Haldia National Waterway-I and also inaugurated IWAI's multi-modal terminal at Ramnagar in Nov 2018 by flagging off a cargo vessel to reduce transportation costs and benefit trade and industries. The step is aimed at empowering local industries, regional development, and ensuring a positive impact on the environment, as it is more eco-friendly compared to road transport. Flag hoisting, parades mark I-Day in city
1 2 Varanasi: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated across the district on Friday with full enthusiasm and patriotic fervour, as the national flag was hoisted at government offices, academic institutions, and various establishments. Divisional Commissioner S Rajalingam hoisted the tricolour at the Commissionerate office, while DM Satyendra Kumar unfurled the flag at the Collectorate. Chief Development Officer Himanshu Nagpal hoisted the flag at Vikas Bhawan. The DC also planted saplings in the Commissionerate compound to mark the day. At Police Lines, Commissioner of Police Mohit Agrawal hoisted the national flag, took the salute of the parade, and addressed officials and newly recruited women constables. He also presented medals and honoured 52 police personnel for their distinguished service. Meanwhile, BHU celebrated the day with vice-chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi hoisting the flag at Malviya Bhawan, followed by the flag hoisting at the amphitheatre ground, where NCC cadets presented a guard of honour. Students of Central Hindu Girls School captivated the audience with a colourful cultural programme. Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) also marked the occasion with a grand event at BLW Stadium. CM Grid scheme reviewed, directions to expedite work
Varanasi: Divisional commissioner S Rajalingam held a meeting regarding Varanasi Municipal Corporation's work under the CM Grid Scheme on Tuesday. The commissioner reviewed municipal corporation's work related to road improvement, water drainage, sewage, green area development, traffic improvement and other infrastructure and issued directions to the effect. The commissioner conducted separate review of each road and instructed designation of nodal officers from each department to establish inter-departmental coordination to expedite construction work. Additional municipal commissioner, Savita Yadav, was instructed to hold meetings with revenue and other officials to address difficulties in review and work. The commissioner ordered chief engineer of VMC to complete all formalities for resolving issues within a week. Contractors from the firm working on the project were also present and they apprised the commissioner of the challenges they were facing. The meeting was attended by officials from the municipal corporation, along with stakeholders from waterworks, jal nigam, PWD, electricity department, VDA and UPPCL. Under the CM Grid Scheme, the development of six roads is being carried out by VMC on a budget of Rs 47 crore. The project involves road development along with underground shifting of utilities like electric poles and wires. CM Grid Scheme is an ambitious project of UP govt aimed at developing and modernising city roads. Roads will be constructed using modern technology, incorporating features like sidewalks, green zones, solar-powered street lights, bus stops and EV charging stations. The scheme aims to promote he city's economic growth and improve the standard of living for its work carried out under this scheme will be transparent, providing the public with information about road construction. Ganga crosses warning mark in Varanasi, NDRF on alert
The Ganga water level in Varanasi crossed the 70-meter mark on Friday and continues to rise at a rate of 4 centimeters per hour. On Friday, the river was flowing at 70.28 meters. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on alert and fully prepared to handle any emergency situation, if required, informed officials. (Rajesh Kumar/HT Photo) According to the Central Water Commission, the warning level for the Ganga in Varanasi is 70.262 meters, the danger level is 71.262 meters, and the high flood level is 73.901 meters. With the river rising at a rate of 4 centimetres per hour, the water level has reached 70.28 meters and floodwaters have begun entering several low-lying areas in the city. According to the district administration, continuous heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh over the past three days has caused the Ganga in Varanasi to reach the warning level, with the water expected to cross the danger mark soon. Floodwaters have entered several localities, including Konia, Salarpur, Hukulganj, and surrounding areas. Due to the reverse flow in the Varuna river, it has also swollen, leading to flooding in nearby low-lying areas. Moreover, divisional commissioner S Rajalingam and deputy inspector general 11th NDRF Manoj Sharma jointly conducted a field inspection of the flood affected areas, including Ganga Ghats, Konia, Salarpur and Hukulganj. During the inspection, divisional commissioner and NDRF DIG along with senior officials of the local administration, carried out a detailed review of flood preparedness, swift rescue operations, and the relief distribution system. They also held an in-depth discussion on formulating a coordinated strategy to minimize the impact of potential floods and ensure prompt and effective response during any emergency. DIG Sharma stated that NDRF teams are in constant coordination with the local administration and are fully prepared to carry out swift relief and rescue operations in any situation. Flood affected villages and mohallas A total of 15 villages, including Rampur Dhaba, have been affected by the flood. In Rampur Dhaba, both the local population and agricultural land have suffered, while in the other 14 low-lying villages, agricultural fields have been impacted. So far, 294 farmers have been affected, with over 53 hectares of crops damaged due to the flooding. A total of 10 localities, including Salarpur, Saraiya, Nakkhi Ghat, Daniyalpur Konia, Dhelwariya, Pul Kohna, Rasulgarh, Nagwan, and Pushkar Talab, have been affected by the flood. So far, 209 families have been relocated to flood relief camps, while 227 families have taken shelter at other safe locations. In total, 953 people are currently staying in relief camps and 1,066 are residing at alternative shelters. Currently, 13 flood relief camps are operational, while a total of 46 have been identified across the district and kept ready for use. On Friday, 2,677 lunch packets were distributed, and 22 boats were deployed for relief and rescue operations.

PM Modi to unveil ₹2,183-crore projects during 51st visit to Kashi
VARANASI Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stone of 52 development projects worth ₹2,183 crore during his 51st visit to Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, on August 2. He will also address a gathering on the occasion, said officials. The PM will lay the foundation stone for comprehensive road widening and strengthening across multiple rural and urban corridors, including Dalmandi, Lahartara-Kotwa, Gangapur, Babatpur, among others and Railway Overbridges at level crossing 22C and Khalispur Yard. (File Photo) The projects span across key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, tourism, urban development and cultural heritage, aimed at achieving holistic urban transformation, cultural rejuvenation, improved connectivity and enhanced quality of life in Varanasi. Foundation laying of 38 projects worth ₹1,618 crore is planned while 14 projects worth ₹565 crore are scheduled for inauguration, said divisional commissioner S Rajalingam. On the eve of his visit to Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X: 'Tomorrow, 2nd August is a very special day for my family members of Kashi. At around 11 am, I will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several projects related to education, health, sports, tourism and connectivity. On this occasion, I will also have the privilege of releasing the 20th installment of PM-Kisan.' In line with his commitment to improving road connectivity in Varanasi, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the widening and strengthening of Varanasi-Bhadohi road and Chhitauni-Shool Tankeshwar road, as well as the Railway Overbridge at Hardattpur, to ease congestion on the Mohan Sarai-Adalpura Road. He will lay the foundation stone for comprehensive road widening and strengthening across multiple rural and urban corridors, including Dalmandi, Lahartara-Kotwa, Gangapur, Babatpur, among others and Railway Overbridges at level crossing 22C and Khalispur Yard. In a major boost to health infrastructure, the Prime Minister will inaugurate advanced medical equipment installations, including robotic surgery and CT scan facilities, at Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital. He will also lay the foundation stone of a Homoeopathic College and Hospital. Further, he will inaugurate an Animal Birth Control Centre. Furthering his vision for world-class sports infrastructure in Varanasi, the PM will inaugurate a synthetic hockey turf at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Sports Stadium. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give equipment to 2,025 divyangs. All preparations for his visit have almost been completed. These gifts include motorised tricycles among others,' said the divisional commissioner. Commissioner of police, Mohit Agarwal, said: 'Tight security arrangements have been put in place for the visit.' Kashi region BJP president Dilip Patel said the PM will be on his 51st visit to his parliamentary constituency. His previous visits to Varanasi contributed to the city's development immensely and transformed Kashi while maintaining its antiquity and heritage. Patel said the PM is expected to arrive at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport before noon and will proceed to Banauli in Kalika Dham (Sewapuri Assembly constituency), where he will address a public meeting. Around 50,000 people are expected to attend the rally. To ensure smooth organisation of the event, the BJP has made elaborate preparations. The venue has been divided into 20 blocks, each managed by a dedicated team of 13 BJP workers and an in-charge. Special seating arrangements have been made for VIPs, women, farmers, intellectuals, media personnel, and people with disabilities (Divyangs). Modi to disburse ₹20,500 cr under PM-KISAN scheme VARANASI In a significant step towards farmer welfare, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release the 20th instalment of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan) on August 2. An amount of more than ₹20,500 crore will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of over 9.7 crore farmers across the country. With this release, the total disbursement under the scheme since its inception will surpass ₹3.90 lakh crore. Uttar Pradesh alone will see more than 2.3 crore farmers receive ₹4,600 crore, including ₹48 crore to 2.21 lakh farmers in Varanasi. HTC
