Belfast Giants begin blue-line build with return of experienced defenceman
One of the club's longest-serving current players, the 32-year-old Canadian has inked a one-year extension to return to the defending Elite League and Challenge Cup champions for their double title defence. An adept two-way defenceman, who can also play forward but is predominantly at home on the blue-line, Roach has long led the Giants' offense from the back, scoring 25 goals and 157 points in 210 games since joining the organisation in 2018. Since moving to the SSE Arena, with three seasons in Austria in the middle of his two spells in teal, the Saskatchewan native has been a prolific winner, lifting seven trophies in his four seasons with the Giants. Having made a name for himself by scoring at better than a point-a-game ratio in his last two seasons at the University of Saskatchewan between 2016 and 2018, Roach would begin his professional career in Belfast when he joined the Giants in the summer of 2018 and it would prove to be a fruitful partnership. The defenceman would finish the season with a League and Cup double under his belt, as well as a personal tally of 11 goals and 69 points in 81 games, earning him an All-Star First Team nomination and a big-money move to Austrian side Black Wings Linz for the following season. His performances in the ICEHL would see him lauded as one of the best defencemen in the League, however a combination of injuries and the Covid-19 pandemic would limit him to just 18 games the following season and then 16 games the year after that, leading to Roach heading into semi-retirement in the summer of 2022. However, after a mini-comeback in the semi-pro Sask Valley Hockey League, the Giants would reach out in December 2022 and the Saskatoon man would answer the call, jetting in for the second half of the campaign and helping the team win the Grand Slam by scoring two goals and 18 points in 29 games. Roach would have another injury-impacted year in the 2023/24 campaign, playing just 33 games due to an injury held over from the previous season, although he showed that his offensive capabilities were still there by returning to nearly a point-a-game pace with six goals and 30 points in that time. And he would return to the peak of his powers last year in helping the Giants to another League and Cup double, firing in six goals and 40 points in 67 games as Keefe's men continued their recent Elite League dominance.
