‘Inspiring the next generation'; Girls in Aviation Day take dreams to new altitudes

Annual Girls Aviation Day was held at London International Airport today, meant to empower the next generation of women in aviation, aerospace and STEAM. It was a day of hands-on learning for 800 young women, who took over a portion of the tarmac at London International Airport (YXU). The Great Lakes Aviators Canada hosted its second annual Girls in Aviation Day, in hopes of showing young girls that the sky is the limit. 'I think these events are very important, especially for young females. It's such a male dominated industry at the end of the day,' said Kaitlyn Thomas, a first officer pilot, with Air Canada. 060325 - Aviation Women in Aviation hosts second annual Girls in Aviation Day at London International Airport. (Reta Ismail/CTV London) Students got an up-close look at aircraft and explored interactive stations, meeting women from all aspects of aviation. 'I learned a lot about 'roll' and turbulence and how to manage turbulence, just thinking about being in Jello, which I thought was really fun,' said eighth grader Ola Obute, who hopes to become a pilot one day. A former Military Tactical Hercules pilot, Jackie Book, who is now the Director of Commercial Aviation Management, and President of Great Lakes Aviators Canada Chapter hopes today's event gives the young girls an opportunity to learn more about all the different careers in aviation. 'When girls think of aviation, they just think about becoming a pilot. They don't think about air traffic control or maintenance or manufacturing or any of those other than the business of aviation, which is one of my favorite things, so they don't think about all these other aspects that are aerospace,' explained Book. 060325 - Aviation Women in Aviation hosts second annual Girls in Aviation Day at London International Airport. (Reta Ismail/CTV London) The event, which empowered students from five area school boards, was a collaboration between 40 local and industry partners, including Western University, Fanshawe College and YXU. 'We have a big vision in aerospace and aviation education, and we want to become an aerospace hub for aviation,' said London International Airport CEO Scott McFadzean. 'Inspiring the next generation, specifically females who are underrepresented and in the aviation sector is near and dear to our hearts here at YXU.'

JD Sports and adidas Partner with Aaliyah Edwards of the Washington Mystics on Donation to DC's Simon Elementary School

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--JD Sports, adidas, and Washington Mystics forward Aaliyah Edwards will present a $10,000 donation to Simon Elementary School in Washington, D.C., on Friday, June 6. The donation stems from Edwards' March 2025 appearance on Community Voices, a JD Sports social media series that features celebrities, athletes, and activists to amplify and fund underrepresented voices. During the episode, and in honor of Women's History Month, Edwards discussed the women who have inspired her, her WNBA journey, and her passion for giving back. In support of her commitment to community, JD Sports partnered with adidas to contribute funds toward a new media center at Simon Elementary, located in D.C.'s Ward 8. The school, situated near the Mystics training facility, serves many young Mystics fans—most of whom had never met a professional player before. Edwards first visited Simon through a friend's connection, and her ongoing relationship with the students and school staff inspired her to direct the donation there. 'Ultimately, I'm just so grateful to JD Sports and adidas for helping me do this,' said Edwards. 'The school plans to use the donation to build a media center that supports STEAM programming, helping kids learn coding and how to use technology like iPads and laptops. Giving these kids a chance to just be kids with access to great technology means a lot to me.' Edwards and Principal Franchita Eborn will present the donation during a special ceremony at the school on June 6. As part of the celebration, Simon Elementary will receive a Washington Mystics jersey signed by Edwards. MEDIA & CONTENT CAPTURE AVAILABILITY DATE: Friday, June 6 TIME: Media Arrival and Set Up Time - 8:15 - 8:30 AM ET. Event Start Time - 8:45 AM ET. According to an announcement, more than 100 students applied for the STEAM scholarship, which supports those pursuing college degrees in science-related fields. 'It is truly impressive to see the talent in our community and FBP is proud to be a part of their journey towards a STEAM-related career.' In addition to the $2,000 STEAM scholarships, the inaugural $1,000 FBP Trade scholarships were awarded to students ready to further their education for a career in the trades. STEAM/STEM Day for youth in Kinston

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Hope to Destiny for Youth and Dr. Jarrod A. Henderson set to host a free STEAM/STEM Day on May 31 to give youth an opportunity to participate in science, technology, engineering, arts and math activities. Hope to Destiny for Youth is a local eastern North Carolina nonprofit organization founded by Curtis Henderson in 2021. 'At Hope to Destiny for Youth, we are the ones who provide a second chance for youth and young adults by way of prevention, intervention and suppression in gang involvement,' Henderson said. 'We provide substance abuse education and juvenile delinquency prevention through mentoring and education to support and influence at risk youth by serving as caring adults and positive role models in their lives.' 'Introducing youth to STEM/STEAM activities fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills,' Kinston native Dr. Jarrod Henderson said. 'It prepares them for future careers in technology-driven fields, encourages innovation, and promotes collaboration. Early exposure builds confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for learning, equipping them to tackle global challenges and shape a better future.' ZEF gifts largest grant cycle in 30 years

Twice per school year, the Zionsville Education Foundation (ZEF) visits schools across the district with a surprise grant for teachers, coaches and others in the classroom. This spring, ZEF granted $75,068.33 for 19 different requests at all nine schools. A portion of the funds went toward the classroom, giving teachers the tools they need to create innovative projects and unique experiences such as technology for design and robotics, an outdoor learning program for kindergarteners and graphic novels for multilingual high school students. For example, teachers Brooke Dobrovodsky and Laurel Pilcher at Union Elementary School received $4,279.50 for books that inspire a lifelong love for reading with genre challenges, game-style competitions and teamwork. The other portion of funds went toward Imagine Professional Development Grants, sending educators to STEAM conferences, a Spanish language program in Spain and other enrichment opportunities. School counselors from Zionsville West Middle School, Laura Dyer and Avory Freund, were awarded $6,000 to attend the American School Counselor Association conference to explore best practices and resources. Six representatives from all Zionsville elementary schools received $9,040 to attend the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA) conference in Lexington, Ky., to learn more about hands-on educational opportunities, new resources and team cohesion. 'We would like to offer a special thanks to the Barth Family Fund for their support of this grant cycle and many others. We are grateful for their generosity and for their commitment to ZEF's mission,' ZEF Executive Director Lyle Browne said. 'Their donation combines with the incredible support of our event sponsors and individual donations to provide grants like this to our schools.' This cycle marked the last one for long-time ZEF board member and Grants Committee Chair Jane Louiso. 'We are grateful for the teachers, administrators, volunteers, donors and staff that make these grants possible,' ZEF Board President Kim Lewis said. 'I would also like to make a special note of Jane's steadfast service on our grants committee. Her passion for ZEF's mission is evident in everything she does. She will pass the baton to Katy Ruhl who will be a fantastic leader along with our other passionate, dedicated committee members.' Since 1995, ZEF has awarded more than $1.9 million in classroom and professional development grants. For a complete list of awards, visit the website at
