More than 160 Shetland drivers handed LEZ fines in Aberdeen
More than 160 fines have now been issued to Shetland drivers who have breached Aberdeen's low-emission zone. A freedom of information request shows that 16 of these notices were for one of the highest penalties—£480—given to drivers of vehicles that have fallen foul of the rules four times. The LEZ, which aims to discourage more polluting vehicles, is near the exit from the city's NorthLink terminal, where the overnight ferry from Shetland berths. Between June 1, 2024, when the LEZ began being enforced, and May 31 this year, a total of 162 notices were issued to vehicles registered with a ZE postcode. Most notices have been issued with a minimum fine of £60, but a number of penalties have been given for repeat offenders. Aberdeen City Council said that, based on general observations, the vehicles involved were 'typically passenger vehicles, light goods vehicles, and heavy goods vehicles.' Low emissions zones (LEZ) are in place in a number of Scottish cities, and fines are dished out if vehicles which fail to meet emissions criteria are driven in them. They aim to improve air quality in cities by encouraging the use of greener vehicles. The LEZ in Aberdeen is located to the immediate right of the junction from the NorthLink ferry terminal and covers the main part of the city centre. Generally, petrol vehicles registered from 2006 onwards and diesel ones registered after September 2015 will meet the required standards. There are some exemptions, including blue badge holders. Although the minimum fine is £60, it is reduced by 50% if it is paid within 14 days. The penalty is doubled with each subsequent breach, with this capped at £480 for cars and light goods vehicles and £960 for minibuses, buses, coaches and HGVs. The LEZ was technically introduced in Aberdeen in 2022 with a two-year 'grace' period imposed through to June 2024. A Scottish travel vlogger who amassed tens of thousands of followers with her trips to extreme destinations has died at home in Hawick. Emma Witters, who posted videos of her travels to Ukraine, Afghanistan and the West Bank, died at home on Friday. Originally from the Scottish Borders, the mother of two moved to the US around two decades ago, according to her YouTube account. She has over 140,000 subscribers on YouTube and nearly 50,000 followers on Instagram. Police Scotland confirmed officers were called to attend a property on Renwick Terrace in Hawick at 10am on Friday. The 57-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and her next of kin were made aware. Police say enquiries are ongoing, however there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'At 10am on Friday, July 11, 2025, officers were called to attend a property on Renwick Terrace, Hawick. 'A 57-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin are aware. 'Enquiries are ongoing, however there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. Trump to meet Starmer in Aberdeen during Scotland trip
Donald Trump has said he will meet with Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Aberdeen when he visits Scotland later this month. On Monday, Downing Street said Starmer was 'pleased to accept' an invitation to an 'informal' meeting with the US President, who is expected to travel to Scotland in July. It comes ahead of an unprecedented second state visit for the President, which will see Trump and the First Lady hosted by King Charles at Windsor Castle from September 17 to 19. Trump was initially due to meet King Charles in Scotland this summer, but the visit was cancelled due to 'diary reasons'. In a BBC News interview on Tuesday, Trump confirmed his meeting with Starmer will be held in Aberdeen and spoke of the city's links to the oil and gas industry. 'That's gonna be up in Aberdeen, which is the oil capital of Europe,' he said, adding 'They should bring it back too, they have so much oil there. 'They should get rid of the windmills and bring back the oil.' Trump is a big backer of oil and gas, known for his 'drill, baby, drill' oil policy in the US and his stance against the building of wind turbines near his Menie Estate golf course in Aberdeenshire. He spoke of his relationship with Starmer, quipping: 'I really like the Prime Minister a lot, even though he's a liberal. He added: 'He did a good trade deal with us, which a lot of countries haven't been able to do.' Trump last visited Scotland in 2023, attending a ceremony to break ground on a second golf course at the Menie Estate, which is due to be completed this summer. The trip to Scotland will be his first since he was elected for a second term. Police Scotland's deputy chief constable said that the force will look to secure extra funding from the Scottish Government to police the visit. 'This is not a fulfilling life': Scheffler questions why he chases majors
Long-time world number one Scottie Scheffler is chasing his second major of the year and fourth of his career at Royal Portrush but admits every day he questions why. The most successful and consistent golfer of the last four years appeared to be having some kind of existential crisis as he spoke to the media at Royal Portrush on Tuesday ahead of the 153rd Open Championship – for which he is favourite. Scheffler said winning golf tournaments, which he has done 21 times at various levels – including an Olympic gold medal last year – did not satisfy him. 'This is not a fulfilling life. It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart,' the 29-year-old American said. 'There's a lot of people that make it to what they thought was going to fulfil them in life, and you get there, you get to number one in the world, and they're like, 'What's the point?' 'I really do believe that because, what is the point? Why do I want to win this tournament so bad? That's something that I wrestle with on a daily basis. 'Showing up at the Masters every year it's like, 'Why do I want to win this golf tournament so badly? Why do I want to win The Open Championship so badly?' 'I don't know because if I win it's going to be awesome for two minutes, then we're going to get to the next week and it's, 'Hey, you won two majors this year; how important is it for you to win the FedEx Cup play-offs?' 'It feels like you work your whole life to celebrate winning a tournament for like a few minutes. It only lasts a few minutes, that kind of euphoric feeling.' Scheffler has won three times this year, has one runner-up finish and eight other top-10s in 15 events. He has not finished outside the top 25 this season, not missed a cut since the FedEx St Jude Classic in August 2022 and has PGA Tour career earnings of nearly US dollars 88million (£65.4m), but admits if golf ever started impacting his family he would immediately quit. 'I'm blessed to be able to come out here and play golf, but if my golf ever started affecting my home life or it ever affected the relationship I have with my wife or my son, that's going to be the last day that I play out here for a living,' he added. 'This is not the be-all and end-all. This is not the most important thing in my life. That's why I wrestle with, why is this so important to me? 'Because I'd much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer. At the end of the day, that's what's more important to me.'
