Sukma 2026: Johor begins early preparations with sights set on top-three finish
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor is targeting a top-three placing in the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor, said Johor Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah. 'I have asked all state sports associations to make early preparations, as instructed by the state government. We need be set an example for other states in terms of the development of athletes and sports hubs. 'I have set the target, which is the top three... but if we end up as overall champions, that will be a bonus,' he told reporters at the Larkin state constituency 'Ibadah Korban Perdana' programmehere today. He said this when asked to comment on Johor's preparations for Selangor SUKMA, which is expected to be held in August 2026. Johor has won the overall title at SUKMA once in the Games' 36-year history when it bagged 77 gold medals in the 2022 edition in Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, Mohd Hairi said various international-class sports events are set to be held in the state, including the Sultan of Johor Cup hockey tournament. He reiterated Johor's commitment to become a Sports Nation by 2030, in line with the decree of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim during the opening of the State Assembly session recently. 'Tunku Mahkota Ismail decreed that Johor should be a Sports Nation by 2030, it is quite a huge task for me and my team to place Johor, and Malaysia in general, on the world stage. 'Johor must become a state that provides the best in terms of facilities, infrastructure, athlete development and academics, thus attracting investors,' he said. Earlier, during the 'Ibadah Korban Perdana' programme, a total of 32 cows donated by various parties, including from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, were slaughtered and the meat was distributed to more than 500 residents of the Larkin state constituency, especially to the asnaf group and those in need.

It's A1 Semi-Pro League for Perak FA next season
THE Perak Football Association (Perak FA) have confirmed that they will join the A1 Semi-Pro League, which is expected to kick off this August. The announcement was made by its president Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin in a statement on Perak FA's official Facebook page today, following a meeting with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, yesterday. He said the Bos Gaurus line-up will consist of players from the Perak Malaysia Games (SUKMA) squad as well as several senior players who previously played in the Super League. 'The Menteri Besar also expressed strong support for Perak FA's efforts to rebuild from the ground up and to provide opportunities for young local talents to shine on a bigger stage. 'He also advised us to start with a solid, well-organised foundation, centred on the development of homegrown talents,' he said. Mohd Azhar said that besides competing in the A1 Semi-Pro League, the association will also focus on rebuilding the state's youth and feeder teams, as well as grassroots-level competitions. 'This includes the restructuring of teams for the 2026 President's Cup and Youth Cup, focusing on the development of the SUKMA team, in addition to organising state-level leagues such as Liga Perak Sejahtera 2030, the State Amateur Club League, the IPTA/IPTS Perak League, and the District Integrity League (Under-17),' he said. He expressed hope that these efforts would contribute towards restoring the glory of Perak football. On May 22, Amateur Football League (AFL) chairman, Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi welcomed the participation of Perak FA and Kedah Darul Aman FC (KDA FC) in the A1 League following both teams' failure to obtain a National Licence to compete in the Super League next season.

Kelantan builds 7 sports venues for SUKMA 2028 preparation
KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government is focusing on the construction of seven major sports facilities in preparation to host the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in 2028. State Youth, Sports, NGOs and Community Unity chairman Zamakhshari Muhamad said that out of the seven projects, three venues are currently under construction while the remaining four are in tender phase. 'The three facilities currently being built are the Bukit Merbau Main Stadium and Shooting Range in Pasir Puteh district, as well as the Jeli Sports Complex in Jeli district. 'The four other major projects in the tender process are the Hockey Stadium, Indoor Arena and the Squash Centre & Covered Lawn Bowls Court, all in Pasir Puteh, as well as the Aquatic Centre in Kota Bharu,' he told Bernama recently. According to Zamakhshari, progress on the Bukit Merbau Stadium has reached 16.77 per cent since construction began in 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2027. Meanwhile, the construction of the Shooting Range, which began in December last year, which is only at four per cent progress is expected to be completed by the end of December 2026. The Jeli Sports Complex has reached 39.75 per cent progress and is expected to be completed by June 2025. 'SUKMA in Kelantan is expected to take place around June or July 2028. We are confident that all these facilities can be completed on schedule with continuous monitoring by the Public Works Department (JKR) and the commitment of the appointed contractors,' he said. Commenting on the state contingent's preparations, he stated that the Kelantan Sports Council (MSN) has already begun early planning ahead of SUKMA 2026 (in Selangor). 'Based on the experience from SUKMA Sarawak 2024, we have carried out restructuring and appointed new coaches to bring the performance of state athletes to new heights. 'I also frequently go down to the ground to ensure that all preparations are running smoothly according to MSN's planning before we even set our medal targets,' he said.

Putrajaya Sports Complex to boost athlete growth
PUTRAJAYA: The Putrajaya Sports Complex that will soon be built will boost athlete development in the Federal Territories and strengthen the national sports ecosystem. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the suggestion to build the complex was well received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and that currently, she was holding discussions with stakeholders to make it a success. 'We started considering it after we returned from the Sarawak Malaysia Games (SUKMA), we saw the performance of our Federal Territories athletes were very encouraging. 'So, based on that, we had a discussion at the senior management level and came up with the idea to build a sports complex with Putrajaya being the ideal location,' she told reporters atter presenting MADANI aid worth RM278,000 to 27 sports bodies based in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya here today. She added that the complex would focus on high performance sports and would help every national and Federal Territories athlete, and that facilities at the complex were being fine-tuned with some stakeholders in the sports field. 'We will sit down with the Prime Minister's Department's Public-Private Partnership Unit and discuss the matter further,' she said. Zaliha had said in her speech earlier that she had instructed the Federal Territories Sports Council to introduce a star ranking system for sports bodies in the Federal Territories to ensure that they are managed well. The elements considered for assessment in the ranking system include document management and governance, efficient financial management and achievements and successes at the national or international level. 'Insya-Allah, I'm confident with this ranking system, sports bodies will be more competitive and disciplined to ensure the best governance to ensure that performance in the Federal Territories remain at an excellent level,' she added.
