Yayasan Petronas, Taylor's University deliver clean water to Kota Belud villagers

Shariah Nelly (ninth from left) with invited guests as well as representatives from Taylor's University and Hopes Malaysia during the project's handing over on May 22. KOTA KINABALU (June 4): Access to clean water has become a reality for the villagers of Kampung Tinata Ulu in Kota Belud, after the successful completion of a gravity-fed water supply and rainwater harvesting system supported by Yayasan Petronas and implemented by Taylor's University. Located about 80 km from here, the village had relied since 2010 on an outdated gravity water supply system that could not support both household and farming needs. However, this is now a thing of the past for the community of over 200 villagers, who are looking forward to a better life ahead. Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Petronas, Shariah Nelly Francis, said, 'Access to clean water has long been a critical need for this community. It is our hope that the completion of this project will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the community here.' Village Development and Security Committee chairman for Kampung Tinata, Hadlee Panchai, said 'The new water supply system has changed our lives for the better. We used to hold gotong-royong every week just to repair the pipes, which disrupted the villagers' daily efforts to earn a living. We are grateful for this contribution.' The newly installed system includes a four-kilometre gravity-fed water pipeline and central storage tanks, with a total capacity of 3,600 gallons (13,630 litres). In addition to providing a reliable water supply, the 18-month project, which saw Taylor's University collaborate with Sabah-based non-governmental organisation Hopes Malaysia, introduced sustainable farming practices and shared relevant skills to the residents, to enable them to manage the system independently over the long term. The villagers adopted a hands-on approach in assembling the gravity-fed water system at the main water source and installing rainwater harvesting in their homes upon receiving training from Hopes Malaysia. The initiative is part of Yayasan Petronas' Memampankan Ekonomi Asas Rakyat (MEKAR) programme, which aims to empower communities by addressing basic needs and offering skills and entrepreneurship development training to villagers. This marks Yayasan Petronas' second clean water supply project in Sabah under the MEKAR programme following a 2022 initiative in Pitas that benefited 200 families across five villages. In 2017, Petronas also provided gravity-fed water supply solutions to Kampung Patiu, Kampung Katud and Kampung Pulutan in Kota Marudu.

Bung the last person to talk about loyalty

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has responded to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's latest remarks, labelling them arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political landscape. "Bung is the last person who should talk about loyalty or sincerity. He tried to bring down the very government he was part of, just to serve his own ambition. That speaks volumes," he said. He rejected Bung's claim that GRS betrayed Barisan Nasional (BN), calling it a clear attempt to distort the facts and shift blame. "It's Bung who conspired with Warisan and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (PKDM) in January 2023 to topple the government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. "He wasn't betrayed, he was the one doing the betraying. Even while sitting in the state Cabinet,he had no respect for his colleagues in the state government led by Hajiji as Chief Minister." Joniston added that GRS was never reliant on Umno. "If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. Why did even your own colleagues abandon your 'Langkah Kinabalu'? Why did PH support Hajiji, not you? The answer is obvious because the trust wasn't with you," he said. "Sabah isn't your political lifeline. Don't treat this state like your fallback plan," he said. Earlier today, Bung had said Sabah Umno will not cooperate with GRS for the 17th state election. He stressed that the party will only consider any form of cooperation with GRS after the election. Bung claimed that the bitter experience of working with GRS in the past has made Sabah Umno more cautious in forming political alliances, especially with the Sabah-based coalition, in orderto avoid being betrayed again. He had earlier announced BN's cooperation with Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH), even before any formal decision was made by the top leadership of both coalitions. The collaboration was later formalised through a joint statement by leaders from both BN and PH at the federal level.

Sabah Umno will not work with GRS for upcoming state polls

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno will not cooperate with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) for the 17th state election, its chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin said. He stressed that Sabah Umno will only consider any form of cooperation with GRS after the election. Bung Moktar claimed that the bitter experience of working with GRS in the past has made Sabah Umno more cautious in forming political alliances, especially with the Sabah-based coalition, in order to avoid being betrayed again. "Sabah Umno is not refusing to work with GRS, but we have gone through a dark and bitter history with them. "To consider working together again, we must be cautious and assess their sincerity. "There's an old saying: don't get bitten by the same snake twice. "As for any post-election cooperation, Umno will evaluate the matter after the polls," he said when contacted today. He was commenting on a statement by Kota Kinabalu Umno chief, Mosliati Muslimin, who said there was no longer room for political cooperation with GRS or Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat). Mosliati, who is also Wanita Umno exco member, had said that such a decision was made as Umno should not be treated as a mere accessory, to be used for political purposes and deceived by false promises from former allies. She also recalled how Umno's previous cooperation with GRS during the last state polls in September 2020 led to betrayal, despite the party's contribution to the coalition's victory and the formation of the state government. She had claimed that Bung Moktar was initially promised the Works Ministry portfolio in the state cabinet led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, but it was unilaterally changed to the Local Government and Housing Ministry without any valid explanation. Mosliati had said that the Works Ministry portfolio was only returned after pressure was exerted on Hajiji. Bung Moktar, who is also Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman, had on many occasions made clear his stand against renewing cooperation with GRS. He had earlier announced BN's cooperation with Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH), even before any formal decision was made by the top leadership of both coalitions. The collaboration was later formalised through a joint statement by leaders from both BN and PH at the federal level.

Eco group proposes village waste centres in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah-based eco-tourism group seeks government support for a village clean-up and environmental education programme in Kinabatangan, one of the state's richest biodiversity hotspots. The Kinabatangan-Corridor of Life Tourism Operators Association (KiTA) proposes a three-part initiative. This includes constructing new waste disposal centres in Kampung Bilit and Kampung Sukau and a community river-cleaning awareness campaign. KiTA president Johnny Lim said the initiative aims to tackle pressing waste management issues and improve environmental stewardship in the region. "We hope the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry (KePKAS) will support this effort through a matching grant. The programme is not just about infrastructure. It is about educating the community on proper waste disposal and river conservation." "Cleaner rivers and villages benefit residents and help sustain eco-tourism in the long run," he said after presenting the proposal to Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew during a recent courtesy visit. Lim noted that the existing waste disposal centre in Kampung Bilit, built by KiTA in 2015, has become rundown and now undermines both the local environment and tourism appeal. "We propose to build a new facility near the current site, working with local authorities to ensure regular waste collection," he said. Liew welcomed the initiative, calling it a meaningful step towards protecting Kinabatangan's natural assets while strengthening community participation in conservation. "The Ministry will consider the application. We appreciate KiTA's dedication to environmental sustainability, especially in areas critical to eco-tourism like Kinabatangan," she said. Also present at the meeting were KePKAS senior assistant secretary Dr Dayang Siti Maryam Mohd Hanan, Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar, and KiTA's immediate past president, Alexander Yee Kok Tsen.

Published on: Friday, May 30, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 30, 2025 By: Larry Ralon Text Size: (From left) Wilson Loke (Group Executive Director), Stella Loke (Group Executive Director), Datuk Tan Kok Liang (Indipendent Non-Executive Director), Dato' Hj Hamzah bin Haji Ghazalli (Independent Non-Executive Chairman), Datuk Dr Gordon Loke (Group Managing Director/CEO), Chua Chai Hua (Independent Non-Executive Director), Lim Guik Moi (Independent Non-Executive Director), Harjeet Singh (Chief Financial Officer), and Azlan Khalid (Chief Operating Officer). Kota Kinabalu: Sabah-based property developer KTI Landmark Berhad (KTI:0308) registered a profit after tax of RM8.5 million for the financial year ended 31 December 2024 (FY2024), as it marked a key milestone with its first 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) since listing on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia in June last year. The KTI Landmark Berhad reported RM175.4 million in revenue for FY2024, supported by total sales of RM267.8 million and unbilled sales amounting to RM294.4 million. Despite incurring RM1.96 million in listing-related expenses, the company delivered a stable bottom line, highlighting the resilience of its core operations and the strength of its development pipeline. As of year-end, KTI's outstanding order book stood at RM214 million, with a total gross development value (GDV) of RM2.73 billion, including hospitality and retail assets. Addressing shareholders during 2025 AGM at Hilton Kota Kinabalu here, Thursday, KTI Group Chairman Dato' Haji Hamzah Ghazalli reflected on the company's evolution from a local construction firm founded in 1984 to one of Sabah's most recognised developers. 'Our IPO was not just about raising capital. It represented a new chapter of governance, visibility and investor confidence,' he said. He highlighted recent key developments such as Ayuria Place, a residential project built using environmentally friendly Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) and The Logg in Luyang, a mixed-urban development that combines residential, retail, and commercial offerings. Advertisement KTI Landmark Berhad's operations in FY2024 saw the launch and progress of several residential and commercial projects, particularly in growth corridors like Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. These efforts reflect the company's strategic focus on sustainable, integrated and affordable housing solutions for Sabahans. With urbanisation and demographic trends driving demand, KTI continues to work with government-linked entities such as Lembaga Pembangunan Perumahan Dan Bandar (LPPB) and national affordable housing programmes like Perumahan Penjawat Awam Malaysia (PPAM) to meet the state's housing needs. The company's annual report also noted a strong rebound in Malaysia's construction sector in 2024, led by public infrastructure and housing initiatives. With national data showing double-digit growth in the sector, KTI is positioning itself to benefit from these tailwinds by embedding sustainability and digital innovation in its operations. This includes the use of green construction methods, smart home features, and digital sales platforms aimed at younger, tech-savvy buyers. KTI Landmark Berhad's shares closed at RM0.410 on Tuesday, giving the company a market capitalisation of approximately RM328 million. Since listing, the company has seen steady investor interest, underpinned by confidence in its long-term strategic direction and alignment with government housing policies. Looking ahead, KTI plans to continue expanding its landbank in urbanising areas across Sabah, diversify its partnerships to enhance margins, and reinforce its ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) leadership. These steps are part of its broader strategy to deliver value for stakeholders while shaping the property landscape of Sabah. 'To our employees, shareholders and partners, thank you for your trust. We remain committed to creating a sustainable, prosperous future for Sabah and beyond,' said Hamzah. Founded in 1984, KTI Landmark Berhad is a Sabah-based property developer specialising in integrated and affordable housing.
