GRS and PH confirm electoral pact for Sabah state election
KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has officially announced an electoral pact between GRS and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election. The Chief Minister stated that the decision followed discussions among GRS component parties, with a consensus reached to collaborate with PH. Hajiji, who also leads Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), emphasised that the move aligns with the existing cooperation between the two coalitions in the state government. 'Of course, we are ready, but the electoral pact formula is not yet finalised. There are still a few matters to iron out,' he told reporters after officiating the Gagasan Rakyat Annual General Meeting 2025. Sabah PH deputy chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud welcomed the announcement, calling it 'good news for Sabah.' He added that the next step involves negotiations on seat allocation, expressing hope for a fair distribution. When asked about PH's target, Mustapha indicated the coalition is eyeing 23 to 25 seats, pending final discussions. The 16th Sabah state assembly's term will automatically end on November 11, setting the stage for the upcoming state election. – Bernama

Sabah Amanah eyes winnable seats in state polls, open to GRS talks
KOTA KINABALU, July 19 — Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Sabah is determined to contest in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election, focusing on securing winnable seats, said its chairman Datuk Lahirul Latigu. 'Our focus is clear, for Amanah to contest, we must secure winnable seats,' he said after the launch of Amanah Sabah's election machinery here on Saturday. Lahirul said the final decision on candidates would lie with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition leadership, and emphasised the importance of loyalty and unity within the party. 'Being the candidate is not the main priority. Whoever is chosen, whether it is me or another candidate from PH component parties, we must all give our full support,' he said. He acknowledged that the party faces challenges, especially with a smaller number of seats available compared to before, and said the final allocation will depend on ongoing negotiations, including possible talks with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). 'For this election, although some call it a 'friendly contest', we will do our best to minimise clashes with other parties,' he said. Meanwhile, Lahirul called on Amanah's grassroots to be fully prepared, noting that the party has grown steadily in Sabah over the past decade. 'Since establishing a presence in Sabah 10 years ago, Amanah has expanded to 18 areas in the state with about 15,000 members,' he said. 'We have been contesting since 2018, and despite the major challenges in the political landscape… this time, we must win. He urged party machinery at all levels to go to the ground and strengthen their presence in targeted constituencies. 'I also urge all our machinery in all areas to go down to the ground and strengthen the constituencies we will contest in.' — The Borneo Post

‘Why should we be arrogant?': Pakatan-BN combo can win big in Sabah polls says Umno sec-gen
TANJONG KARANG, July 14 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) can secure a big win in the next Sabah state election if they join forces, based on trends in past elections, said Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. He said the cooperation between the two coalitions has become a benchmark, as this element was key to their significant wins in three state by-elections — Ayer Kuning in Perak, Mahkota in Johor and Nenggiri in Kelantan. 'We've seen how we managed to win in polling districts that we had never won before, particularly in areas with non-Malay majorities, all because of this cooperation. 'So why should we be arrogant and refuse to work with others? Umno is an open and dynamic party,' he told reporters after opening the Tanjong Karang Umno division delegates meeting here today. Asyraf Wajdi further said that negotiations between PH and BN for cooperation in the Sabah state election have reached 98 per cent completion. Meanwhile, Asyraf Wajdi said Umno is optimistic about recapturing the Tanjong Karang parliamentary seat in the 16th General Election (GE16). He said the seat is considered a priority after Umno's defeat in the last general election. 'To win, the formula is clear — we must return to Umno's core values: unity, loyalty and faith. Unity means there should be no factions within the party. 'Tanjong Karang was a seat we had never lost until the last general election. So, our focus is to make it one of the key seats to win back,' he said. In GE15, the Tanjong Karang seat was won by Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi of Perikatan Nasional with a majority of 2,180 when he polled 18,054 votes. Dr Zulkafperi, who is now an independent, beat BN's Datuk Habibah Mohd Yusof (15,874 votes) and PH's Siti Rahayu (12,314 votes). — Bernama

Zahid: Discussions on Sabah state polls ongoing, no final decision yet
TANAH MERAH, July 11 — Umno has held discussions with relevant parties regarding the upcoming Sabah state election, although no final decision has been made yet. Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said preparations for the Sabah state election had already begun last year as part of the party's readiness efforts. 'We have held discussions, but no final decision has been made yet. In fact, we have been on standby and making preparations since last year to face the Sabah state election,' he told reporters after officiating the Tanah Merah Umno Division delegates' meeting here today. Also present were Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub. The Sabah State Legislative Assembly is scheduled for automatic dissolution on November 11, paving the way for the 17th Sabah state election. In the 16th Sabah state election held in 2020, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which comprises Perikatan Nasional (PN), won 17 seats, Barisan Nasional (BN) secured 14 seats, and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) captured seven seats — together securing enough seats to form the new state government. — Bernama

Growing confidence in Madani leadership
Published on: Friday, July 11, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 11, 2025 Text Size: 'These findings indirectly counter the negative narrative of dissatisfaction towards the Madani Government and reinforce political stability as the people's main priority,' Mustapha said. Kota Kinabalu: It is clear that political stability, both at the federal and state levels, remains the people's top choice as they seek development and prosperity, said Sabah PKR Chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud. He said the people want continuity, not conflict, and are showing growing confidence in the Madani Government's direction. Welcoming the findings of the Ipsos Populism Report 2025, he said they showed that public confidence in the country's future continues to rise. According to the survey, the number of respondents who believe Malaysia is on the wrong track dropped from 52 per cent in 2023 to 40 per cent in 2025 – significantly below the global average of 57 per cent. 'This indicates that the people are beginning to feel the impact of institutional reforms and the positive outcomes brought about by the Madani Government,' he said in a statement. He added that the findings reflect the people's growing confidence in the efforts of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, particularly through his official visits to strengthen multilateral ties and attract foreign investment. 'The warm welcome and respect shown by foreign nations towards the Prime Minister's leadership have elevated Malaysia's stature as a respected nation,' he said. A recent Merdeka Centre survey also showed that the Prime Minister's approval rating rose to 55 per cent in May this year, up from 43 per cent in June 2024. Support for the Federal Government similarly increased to 50 per cent, compared to 40 per cent the previous year. 'These findings indirectly counter the negative narrative of dissatisfaction towards the Madani Government and reinforce political stability as the people's main priority,' Mustapha said. He said this sentiment is also evident in Sabah, where voters are preparing for the coming state election and view political stability as essential for continued development. 'As we approach the Sabah State Election, what the people truly desire is stability – and the Madani Government continues to prove its credibility,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
