Two Sabah media practitioners receive aid from Tabung Kasih@Hawana

One of the recipients, Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, said he was moved by the kind gesture of Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who personally visited his home in Kampung Hungab here today to deliver the contribution. 'I feel appreciated, even though I'm just a photographer. Today is my first day back at work, but I'm only doing light duties as I haven't fully recovered,' said Vicky, who sustained serious injuries in a road accident in March. He said the initiative also reflected the Madani government's concern for the welfare of those facing hardship, especially media practitioners nationwide. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin; Sabah State Information Department director Jainisah Mohd Noor; and Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil. Sabah Media journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is still recovering from surgery for a bowel complication and ruptured appendix in June, expressed his heartfelt thanks after receiving the contribution from Nur-ul Afida at his residence in Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, last Tuesday. 'Thank you for taking the time to visit and hand over the contribution. It will definitely help with my treatment expenses during my recovery,' he said. Meanwhile, Nur-ul Afida said media associations in Sabah could reach out to the secretariat of Tabung Kasih@Hawana, managed by Bernama, to provide information on media practitioners facing health issues or hardships. 'I would like to seek the cooperation of media associations in Sabah to share information with us so that we can assist our fellow media practitioners in need,' she said. Meanwhile, Mariah expressed hope that the SJA could serve as a key platform for coordinating aid to media practitioners in need. 'We will suggest the names of those eligible to receive donations and assist in providing the necessary information,' she said. The Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia Madani by upholding values of compassion and care, particularly for media practitioners who have long contributed to society but are now facing life or health challenges. The fund was established as a Communications Ministry initiative and implemented through Bernama to support serving and retired journalists and other media practitioners who are facing hardships or financial difficulties. 463 media practitioners receive aid from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA
PENAMPANG: A total of 463 media practitioners and veterans across Malaysia have received assistance from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund, aimed at supporting those struggling with health issues or financial difficulties. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the distribution, emphasizing the government's commitment to easing burdens faced by media personnel. 'We will increase our efforts with media associations and clubs in the states to help more media practitioners who are eligible to receive this assistance,' Fahmi said. He noted that funds allocated from previous HAWANA programmes, including a RM1 million contribution announced by the Prime Minister last year, remain unused. During the event, Fahmi presented aid to Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, who sustained severe injuries in a March road accident. Vicky suffered fractures in six left ribs and his left hand, requiring ongoing physiotherapy. With 18 years of service, he became the 24th Tabung Kasih@HAWANA recipient in Sabah. Fahmi also addressed concerns over low journalist salaries, particularly in Sabah, where some earn below RM2,000 despite long service. 'I will ask Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) to gather details for further discussion,' he said, adding that employment status—whether full-time or freelance—would be reviewed. Earlier this week, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin delivered aid to Sabah News journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is recovering from surgery due to intestinal complications. - Bernama

GENERAL PENAMPANG, July 24 (Bernama) -- A total of 463 media practitioners and veterans nationwide have received benefits from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative aimed at helping those facing life difficulties and health problems, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said efforts to support and channel assistance to media personnel facing health challenges or life difficulties would continue to ease their burden. "We will increase our efforts with media associations and clubs in the states to help more media practitioners who are eligible to receive this assistance. "So far, we have not spent the funds allocated from the two previous HAWANA programmes, with a contribution of RM1 million announced by the Prime Minister last year," he told reporters here today. Earlier, Fahmi presented a contribution to Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, who suffered serious injuries in a road accident in March. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin. The accident caused Vicky to suffer fractures in six of his left ribs and left hand, requiring him to undergo continuous physiotherapy treatment. Vicky has served for 18 years at the Information Department since joining the service in 2007. Fahmi said Vicky is the 24th recipient to benefit from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative in Sabah.
