Liberty get unfortunate injury update for Fever game
The post Liberty get unfortunate injury update for Fever game appeared first on ClutchPoints. It's been a successful season so far for the New York Liberty, who currently sit with an impressive record of 15-6 coming back from the All-Star break. The Liberty are coming off of their 2024 WNBA championship, which they won in five games against the Minnesota Lynx, and have shown no signs of championship hangover so far this year. The Liberty's first game after the All-Star break will take place at home against the Indiana Fever; however, the Liberty got an unfortunate injury update regarding one of their key players earlier on Tuesday ahead of the contest. 'Liberty center Nyara Sabally has been downgraded to –OUT (Rest),' reported Jackie Powell of the Locked on Women's Basketball podcast on X, formerly Twitter. Powell added that Sabally 'wasn't a participant in shootaround and was getting treatment 'work done out in the back' according to GM Jonathan Kolb during shootaround this morning.' Sabally is one of the key members on a Liberty team that is brimming with talent and has returned essentially every key player from last year's championship run. Meanwhile, the Fever will be without their own star, Caitlin Clark, who suffered a groin injury shortly before the All-Star break that kept her out of the weekend's festivities. Clark has dealt with various injuries so far in her second season. The Liberty are hoping to generate some momentum and begin to peak at the right time as the WNBA playoffs quickly approach. New York is led in scoring by Breanna Stewart, with co-star Sabrina Ionescu right behind her. The Liberty also recently added some more depth to their talented roster by signing former WNBA player Emma Meesseeman, who hadn't played since 2022 but who has won a Finals MVP in her illustrious career, as reported by ESPN. In any case, the Liberty and Fever are slated to get underway on Tuesday evening at 8:00 PM ET from Brooklyn. (Photo: Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images/REUTERS) Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark has opted out of participating in the WNBA's All-Star festivities while she recovers from a right groin injury. Clark had been named a starter and team captain for Saturday's All-Star Game in Indianapolis after receiving the most fan votes. She also planned to participate in the 3-point contest before issuing her statement on Thursday. "I am incredibly sad and disappointed to say I can't participate in the 3-Point Contest or the All-Star Game. I have to rest my body," Clark said in a statement. "I will still be at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for all the action and I'm looking forward to helping Sandy (Brondello) coach our team to a win." Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally, who was chosen as a starter for Team Clark, pulled out Wednesday due to a ankle injury. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert selected Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes and Atlanta Dream forward Brionna Jones as replacements for Clark and Sabally. Sykes, 31, is averaging 17.1 points per game this season. This will be her first All-Star Game. Jones, 29, is now a four-time All-Star. She is averaging 13.4 points and 7.8 rebounds. Clark, 23, sustained the injury in the final minute of Indiana's 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday in Boston. She has missed 10 regular season games this season, 11 if the Commissioner's Cup final is included. Previously, she had never missed a game in her college of pro career. In 13 games, Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game in her second professional season. Sabally, 27, is averaging a career-best 19.1 points per game. She last played on July 3. "Unfortunately, my body still needs more time to recover and I am unable to suit up and play in this weekend's game," Sabally said. "I'm disappointed." --Field Level Media/Reuters

Satou Sabally's fiery response to getting ‘booed' by Wings fans
The post Satou Sabally's fiery response to getting 'booed' by Wings fans appeared first on ClutchPoints. ARLINGTON, TX — The Dallas Wings were defeated by the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night, losing by a final score of 98-89. One of the big storylines heading into the game was Satou Sabally's return to play her former team. Sabally spent her first five WNBA seasons with the Wings, finishing fifth in MVP voting in 2023 and earning All-Star selections in 2021 and 2023. Sabally, who was acquired by the Mercury in a trade during the offseason, was asked about returning to Dallas after the game. Advertisement 'The city booed me so I'm moving on,' Sabally told reporters. 'I was happy to see everyone in the back and hug everyone. And I was actually really happy to come here. But then, I guess it's also a sign of respect to be booed, so I'll take that.' There certainly wasn't an alarming amount of boos when Sabally was announced at College Park Center on Thursday night. There were some, though, especially when she shot free throws. The former Wings star clearly heard the noise. The Wings had nothing but positive things to say about Sabally, though. Paige Bueckers and Chris Koclanes shared their thoughts on Sabally's game before Thursday's contest. Advertisement 'She just has versatility to her game… She can shoot the three, she can shoot the mid-range,' Bueckers said of Sabally. 'Get to the paint, get to the rim, get to the free throw line. Her size, of course. She provides a lot of problems on both sides of the floor.' 'Just incredible player, did a lot for this organization, for this city, for this team,' Koclanes told reporters. 'Just a matchup nightmare… She's one of the best, she's one of the best in this league. Did a lot for this organization. I'm sure she will get a wonderful welcome back to Dallas.' Koclanes and Bueckers were not with the Wings last season — but they clearly still have respect for Sabally. The Mercury forward is in the middle of a strong 2025 campaign and she has clearly settled into her new home with Phoenix. The Wings and Mercury will play once again on Monday in Phoenix. Tip-off is scheduled for 10 PM EST as the Western Conference opponents prepare for a rematch. Mercury's Satou Sabally calls latest CBA offer from WNBA a ‘slap in the face' amid latest expansion push
Negotiations between the WNBA and the players association don't appear to be going well. 'We got a proposal from the league, which was honestly a slap in the face,' Phoenix Mercury forward and team union rep Satou Sabally said on Tuesday, via AZ Central's Jeff Metcalfe. While specifics of that proposal aren't known, Sabally's comments aren't a great sign whatsoever — especially with the threat of a lockout coming in the very near future. Advertisement The league and the WNBPA have been in negotiations regarding a new collective bargaining agreement, which is set to expire in 2027. WNBA players announced last year that they are going to opt out of that deal early, but they are playing this season under its current rules. That could lead to a lockout in 2026. There are several key issues that the two sides are working on, most notably the low salaries and benefits players receive. Players have frequently had to supplement their salaries with sponsorship deals and playing in other leagues internationally during the WNBA offseason each year. The WNBA is as popular as ever, which is only adding to the CBA negotiation. The last game of the WNBA Finals last season, for example, saw a 142% increase in ratings over the same game the year prior — and it didn't even feature Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, who has quickly become one of the biggest faces in the league in just her second season. The WNBA reached $2.2 billion in television deals last summer, too. Advertisement Sabally's comments Tuesday came amid the latest announcement of expansion in the league. The WNBA revealed on Monday that there will be three new teams — in Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia — by the end of the decade. That would bring the total number of teams up to 18. While Sabally said she was excited about the expansion news, she made it clear that she doesn't think that's where the biggest focus should be. Instead, she joined calls for expanded rosters and resources for the people who are in the league right now.
