Oil spill closes Discovery Park boat launch
( — The boat launch at Discovery Park has been closed due to an oil spill, according to Sacramento County Regional Parks. The Office of Spill Prevention and Response stated that crews have responded to a 24-foot vessel being salvaged in the Sacramento River after it broke apart and spilled an estimated 20-40 gallons of petroleum product. From brunch to BBQ to hiking: Celebrate Father's Day in Sacramento The spills happened as the vessel was being towed up a boat ramp, OSPR said. Authorities said that due to the warm weather and sunshine, it helped evaporate the product, which produced just a small layer of sheen. At this time, no updates have been released on when the boat lunch will be open. 'No observed impacts to wildlife,' said OSPR. 'Containment equipment deployed as a precaution.' Sacramento County to use drones to track homeless people on probation
SACRAMENTO — Sacramento County is eyeing a new approach to track and contact people living homeless: drones. The county's probation department said it needs the drones to contact homeless people who are on probation, specifically in hard-to-reach spots like along the American Parkway. "It's a scary thought to think our society is at the point that we are tracking homeless people with drones," said Alan Howard, who uses the American River Parkway. The drones won't just be eyes in the sky. They will be able to communicate with homeless people. The department said this will prevent officers from exposing themselves to potential risk, such as loose animals, terrain issues and other hazards until they are sure it is safe to move in. "Obviously, there are transportation barriers for them to reach us, so we want to remove those barriers," said interim Chief Probation Officer Julie Wherry. Wherry got the green light from the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors to purchase three commercial drones. The goal is to avoid issuing warrants when a homeless person does not show up for their probation check-ins. "Most importantly, support on-site community check-ins with clients to reduce warrants and provide support resources such as clothing, water, snacks and hygiene products," said Wherry. Probation said those services include personal hygiene kits, food, mental health referrals, drug and substance counseling referrals, access to temporary housing resources and information, as well as services provided by system partners. The Sacramento Homeless Union harshly opposes the plan to use drones. Crystal Sanchez, the union's president, gave CBS13 a statement that reads: "The use of drones by the county probation department is just the latest escalation in a disturbing trend - treating people in crisis as if they are criminals to be surveilled, rather than neighbors in need of support and dignity..."Instead of investing in real housing solutions, the county is doubling down on tactics that traumatize, intimidate and further destabilize those who are already vulnerable." "A lot of homeless live right on the other side of this hill here," said Nicholas Free, who works at University Automotive near Cal Expo. "Multiple fires, encampments, but over the years, it has been getting a lot better." In the past, CBS13 has covered homeless encampment fires feet away from Free's work, and it is why he thinks having more surveillance on the American River Parkway is a positive thing. "I think it could be an inside help where they can have eyes up ahead and plan for some of these situations," said Free. The probation department said it will follow all federal, state and local rules for flying the drones. It is still working to secure the grants to purchase them.

Ancil Hoffman Park in Carmichael to temporarily close for safety upgrades
CARMICHAEL — A beloved park in Carmichael is temporarily closing for safety upgrades. Sacramento County said that Ancil Hoffman Park along the American River will start this temporary closure on Wednesday, May 28, so all of its roads can be repaved, resurfaced and restriped. "Driving in, I am sure you hit some bumps," said Sacramento County spokesperson Ken Casparis. "The roads just need to be repaved and so do the parking lots to hit some of those state and federal accessibility standards." During the closure, Casparis said that Ansel Hoffman Golf Course will stay open, and special events at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center will continue, including the Naturefest on June 8. Temporary parking lots will be set up for these activities. "During this temporary closure, we encourage all of the park goers to go and explore other parks along the American River Parkway," said Casparis. "Maybe even find a new favorite for yourself." Casparis said the work begins Wednesday and the closure could be up to two months, but they hope to have it reopened in July.

Work begins on Franklin Boulevard bridge replacement near Cosumnes River Preserve
SACRAMENTO COUNTY – Construction has begun on the replacement bridge near the Cosumnes River Preserve in southern Sacramento County. On Monday, the preserve announced that crews had begun work on the Franklin Bridge. Plans have been in the works for more than a decade to replace the timber trestle bridge along Franklin Boulevard over the Lost Slough. Bridge update! ~ Sacramento County has begun construction on the Franklin Bridge. They estimate the re-opening to be in October of 2025. Stay tuned for updates. Posted by Cosumnes River Preserve on Monday, May 19, 2025 The new bridge is planned to have two 12-foot traffic lanes and 6-foot paved shoulders, giving enough space for future Class II bicycle lanes. With a cost of around $11.3 million, Sacramento County officials say the project is being funded by the Federal High Bridge Replacement program and the Road Fund. Franklin Boulevard north of Desmond Road has been closed for some time in anticipation of the construction work. People aiming to get to the Cosumnes River Preserve from Elk Grove will need to detour around the work by taking Twin Cities Road to Bruceville Road, then onto Desmond Road before rejoining Franklin Boulevard. Sacramento County officials anticipate the new bridge to be ready by around October 2025.
