Arrival of towering Landis charges up Turtles' defensive unit

PETALING JAYA: The arrival of towering Brazilian centreback Diego Landis has added serious strength and fierce competition to Terengganu's defensive line. And no one is more aware of that than Safwan Mazlan. The 23-year-old knows he faces a steep climb to earn a regular spot in the starting 11, especially with Landis and seasoned national defender Shahrul Nizam Ros Hasni expected to lead the backline. 'Breaking into the first 11 is no easy task,' admitted Safwan, who featured in 22 of Terengganu's 24 Super League matches last season. 'But I believe in myself and my ability to compete at the highest level. I know I have to push harder and work even more diligently to earn that spot.' Terengganu's centreback depth doesn't end there. Promising national youth talent Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili and versatile defender Syafiq Danial are also vying for minutes, creating one of the most competitive defensive units in the league. Safwan, however, brings versatility to the table. Capable of playing both right and leftback, he offers tactical flexibility, though even those positions are tightly contested, with the likes of Alif Zakaria, Faris Rifqi, Hairiey Hakim, and Azam Azmi Murad in the mix. Coach Badrul Afzan Razali has used pre-season as a proving ground, rotating his squad to assess form and fitness ahead of the season opener against Penang at the City Stadium in Georgetown on Aug 10. Safwan has featured prominently in those matches and is making every minute count. 'So far, our pre-season has been really encouraging. 'The results have been positive, and we've been able to spot areas for improvement to strengthen the team. These matches have also been crucial in helping players build rhythm and confidence ahead of the league.' Safwan credits Badrul for empowering the next generation of Terengganu stars. 'Coach Badrul has given a lot of young players the opportunity to step up and find their confidence. That support has been vital as we prepare for the Super League.'

Suhas Shetty Murder: The Karnataka Police have arrested eight people in connection with the murder case of rowdy sheeter and Hindu activist Suhas Shetty. According to police sources, all the arrested accused belong to a notorious gang called 'Safwan'. Suhas, the main accused in the high-profile 2022 murder of Mohammed Fazil, was hacked to death by a group of unidentified assailants in Kinnikambla, Bajpe, on the night of May 1. Fazil's brother Adil had reportedly hired the assailants and paid them to kill Shetty, sources said. The Mohammed Fazil murder case of 2022 was a retaliatory killing for the Praveen Nettaru murder that took place days ago, for which Suhas was the prime accused. Who All Are Arrested? Suhas Shetty, a known rowdy sheeter and Hindutva activist, was murdered by an unidentified group late on Thursday within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru. He was attacked at around 8:30 pm while he was traveling with five of his associates when their vehicle was intercepted near Kinnipadavu Cross by the attackers. The attackers, around six people, were traveling in a Swift car and a pickup truck. They reportedly attacked Shetty and his group, assaulting him with deadly weapons causing serious injuries. Clashes on Syrian-Lebanese border trigger hostage standoff

Intense clashes erupted along the Syrian-Lebanese border near Hermel, particularly in the town of Hawik, between local clans and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). According to LBCI sources, a large HTS patrol entered several villages west of the Assi River, including Hawik, Blouza, and Wadi Hanna—Syrian villages inhabited by Lebanese nationals. Upon their entry, the HTS fighters came under fire from smugglers on the outskirts of Hawik. In response, they indiscriminately opened fire on the village using mortar shells and anti-aircraft weapons, prompting most of the town's residents to flee toward Lebanese territory. Once inside Hawik, HTS militants torched a house and looted several others, leading to fierce clashes with armed clan members who killed three HTS members and captured two others. In retaliation, HTS detained three individuals from the clans, including Dr. Ahmed Zaayter and two members of the Safwan family, all residents of Hawik. Currently, both sides are engaged in negotiations for a prisoner exchange.
