How SailGP Keeps the Boats From Breaking

Sailing wisdom holds that if a weakness exists, the sea will find it. The Australia SailGP team members experienced this firsthand just before the start of Race 7 of the Oracle San Francisco Sail Grand Prix in March, when the wing sail of their foiling F50 catamaran collapsed. No one was hurt, but an investigation revealed a construction problem affecting multiple boats. SailGP, which owns and maintains the league's 12 identical F50s, began to fix the problem. This included investigating the cause of the failure, canceling the next event and upgrading all of the fleet's wing sails. While this incident was striking, it illustrated a larger challenge for the league, which will hold its next event — the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix — in Portsmouth, England, on Saturday and Sunday. F50s may look like they effortlessly fly across the water on hydrofoils, but back ashore it takes a small army to ensure the boats are constantly ready and evenly matched. 'Every F50 has daily pre- and post-sailing checks that take place from all departments: electronics, hydraulics rigging, boat building,' said Joel Marginson, director of SailGP Technologies, the league's design, engineering and manufacturing operation. 'At the end of the event, all the boats and wings are completely disassembled and fully serviced.' Marginson said this included nondestructive testing — for example, ultrasonic testing, thermography and radiography — to identify any issues. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Pre-registration now open for the inaugural World Sailing Inclusion Championships

Muscat: World Sailing is excited to announce that pre-registration is now open for the first World Sailing Inclusion Championships, taking place at the Mussanah Sailing School at the Barceló Mussanah Resort in the Sultanate of Oman from 30 November to 8 December 2025. Organised in partnership with Oman Sail, this groundbreaking event marks a major milestone for the sport – the first multiclass, global championship hosted by World Sailing that is designed specifically to include both Para classified athletes and athletes with disabilities who do not meet IPC classification criteria, all racing side by side in an inclusive, high-performance environment. The championship will feature competition across five categories, including the RS Venture Connect two-person keelboat, which is open to both Para-classified and inclusive category teams using servo control systems; the Hansa 303 single class, which welcomes sailors regardless of classification; the ILCA 6 class, designated for athletes with intellectual impairments and requiring Virtus, Special Olympics, or World Sailing II classification; the RS21 blind fleet racing class, open to visually impaired sailors classified as B1, B2, or B3; and Seated Wing Foiling, an exciting new discipline open to both Para MIC-classified and self-declared inclusive athletes. Interested sailors, teams and MNAs are invited to complete the pre-registration form to express interest. Early pre-registration is strongly encouraged as entries will be limited per class, but sailors must note that pre-registration does not confirm entry due to the limited availability of charter equipment in each class and the rotational race formats detailed in the Notice of Race. Pre-registration will guide the organisers in the planning of equipment use, accommodation needs, classification logistics and the overall event structure. This is particularly important given the The Notice of Race (NoR) and Sailing Instructions are available now on the World Sailing website and provide full details on eligibility, format, classification, equipment, and entry fees. Dr Khamis Al Jabri, CEO of Oman Sail, said, 'We are honoured to host the first World Sailing Inclusion Championships. This event is a powerful statement about the importance of inclusion – both in sport and in society. We look forward to welcoming sailors from around the world to Oman for what promises to be an unforgettable championship.' Hannah Stodel, Para World Sailing Manager, added, 'This first edition of such a landmark event promises to be an exciting opportunity to showcase the diversity of our sport. The Inclusion Championships are a celebration of what sailing can be – inclusive, dynamic, and welcoming to all. From grassroots participants to elite competitors, this is a chance to compete on equal terms.' A dedicated competition site has now launched, where you'll find more information on equipment, registration, and media contacts. It will also host the confirmed entry list, results and all event updates in the lead-up to and during the championships.

Rod Stewart's Glastonbury performance from overheating to missing act

Sir Rod played at the Somerset festival on Sunday afternoon. Sir Rod Stewart performed at Glastonbury Festival yesterday afternoon and certainly put on a show during the Legends slot as he welcomed various different guests on stage. Mick Hucknall, Ronnie Wood and Lulu joined him for an exciting set which included some of his biggest songs such as Maggie May, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy and Sailing - whilst he also belted out other hits like Love Train. During his set, there was a poignantly staged homage to the late Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie. Christine, who passed away in November 2022, was honoured at Glastonbury with her image displayed on the big screen to the admiration of festival-goers. ‌ Fans were densely packed for Sir Rod's set, eagerly absorbing the 80 year old's energetic show, as staff handed out water to keep the audience hydrated amidst the blistering heat at the festival. ‌ Yet, even a star-studded live show like this wasn't exempt from complications. The Mirror takes a look at the intricacies of Rod Stewart's ninety-minute performance and elaborates on how he managed when the heat of Worthy Farm became a challenge... Overheating Due to the sweltering conditions, Rod had to make a temporary exit from the stage not once but twice throughout his extended set, needing to switch up his attire as the temperature soared. Originally wearing a jacket and long-sleeved white shirt, Sir Rod eventually emerged back on stage brandishing a striking pink suit, remarking to fans: "The girls are going to do a song for you while a change my shirt." His band then launched into a spirited cover of 'Lady Marmalade'. Rod's band stepped in to perform another song as he vanished without warning to change into a vibrant green suit for the second time. ‌ Missing guest Lulu, one of Rod's guests during the afternoon performance, had a slightly awkward entrance on stage. After Rod introduced Ronnie Wood and then Lulu, Ronnie promptly made his way on stage, but Lulu was nowhere in sight. Rod paused and announced 'oh Lulu is coming on in a bit' while Ronnie picked up his guitar and played for the massive Glastonbury audience. Lulu later made her appearance, performing Hot Legs with Rod in her dazzling white suit. ‌ Song blunder During one of his most renowned songs, Maggie May, Rod seemed to fumble his introduction. Despite appearing to start singing prematurely, it certainly didn't deter fans from joining in. The song prompted the largest singalong of the set from the enormous crowd, which was filled to capacity as Rod dominated the iconic Pyramid Stage for ninety minutes. ‌ Late finish Rod must have been having such a good time that he ended his set a few minutes late. Amidst the costume changes and celebrity guests, Rod concluded his performance about five minutes behind schedule. "We have got to get off the stage soon, we are done," he informed the audience before performing the hit track Sailing. He also expressed gratitude to all his celebrity guests for their contribution to his show, which was warmly received by fans. One thing's for sure, the 80-year-old rocker certainly knows how to put on a show. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
