Real Madrid could repeat Trent Alexander-Arnold trick with Arsenal star

Real Madrid are looking to pounce if they can take advantage Arsenal's situation, as they did with Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold, over the next 12 months Real Madrid could look to take advantage of another expiring contract after signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, by targeting Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly. Xabi Alonso's side parted ways with £10million to sign their new right-back a month before his Liverpool deal ended in order to make use of Alexander-Arnold in time for the Club World Cup. The full-back was widely expected to head to the Bernabeu over the last 12 months however, with his contract ticking down and no sign of renewal. Having signed Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain a year ago, Real Madrid are building quite the reputation for taking advantage when players find themselves in precarious situations with their contract. ‌ And Lewis-Skelly could soon be their latest target. The young star broke through into Arsenal's first team this season after making his debut against Manchester City and in an unfamiliar position of left-back has found himself deemed good enough to also start for England under Thomas Tuchel. ‌ With the 18-year-old's remarkable rise comes pressure for Arsenal to tie him down to a new contract. Having signed his first professional deal in 2023, the teenager is now set to see his contract expire in 2026. Arsenal are in negotiations to extend the player's deal but according to the Guardian, it has not been a smooth process thus far. Real Madrid could look to take advantage. The Hale End product is one of a number of stars Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is attempting to tie down. The likes of Ethan Nwaneri, William Saliba and Bukayo Saka are all set for new deals with the former also seeing their contract run out in a year's time. ‌ Saliba and Saka both have two years remaining on their respective contracts, though Real Madrid have been closely linked with targeting a move for the French defender. Saka meanwhile looks most concrete to come to a new agreement, and has made it clear he plans to remain at the Emirates. The England winger believes he can fulfil all of his career ambitions at the Emirates. Asked about his future earlier this year, Saka said: 'Yeah, well, for me I want to win and I want to win wearing this badge. So I think it's pretty clear the fans know how much I love them. "You saw when I came on on Tuesday, I think they love me back. So it's a good relationship and I'm really happy to be here and just focus on winning." ‌ It is little surprise that Lewis-Skelly is drawing interest following an impressive first senior season. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the Arsenal star should have been named Young Player of the Year. "At 18 you're a baby," Carragher said on Sky Sports. 'The thought you could win Young Player of the Year at that age. That's something that Michael Owen does or Wayne Rooney, absolute superstars. ‌ "I couldn't believe he wasn't on that list. The reason I went for him was how well he played in big games that I've watched. Against Man City, against Liverpool, in the Bernabeu [against Real].' "That [left-back] has been a massive problem position for Arsenal and he's gone in and looked like it's his and he's always been there," Ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville added. "That's the biggest compliment you can give to a young player, they just slot in. [Bukayo] Saka's done it in the last few years. To go in that position and do what he's done." PSG Reaches Champions League Final as Arteta Gets Bitter Over Arsenal Loss

PSG has booked their ticket to the UEFA Champions League Final and will play against Inter Milan on May 31st at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The French champions defeated Arsenal 2-1 at home and won 3-1 on aggregate. This will be the second time 'Les Parisiens' will play in the Champions League Final after reaching this stage in 2020. This will also be the first time in their history that PSG and Inter meet in an official match. PSG 2-1 Arsenal (AGG. 3-1) The Parc des Princes was rocking before kickoff with large tifos around the stadium to create an intense atmosphere. This did not faze Arsenal, and they had great chances at the start of the game. Gianluigi Donnarumma made two key saves to prevent Arsenal from taking the lead and, at the same time, equalizing the aggregate score. Advertisement In the 27th minute, relief arrived for the PSG fans as a great shot from Fabian Ruiz past David Raya opened the score for the home side. It was 1-0 for PSG and 2-0 for them on aggregate. In the second half, Arsenal kept the pressure on, but Donnarumma continued to make impressive saves. In the 67th minute, PSG were awarded a penalty by VAR as a shot from Achraf Hakimi came off the arm of Myles Lewis-Skelly. Vithinha took the penalty, and while he has a great record from the spot, his tame shot was easily saved by Raya. This was a great moment for Arsenal as the momentum could've shifted in their favor. In the 72nd minute, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia puts a ball for Hakimi on the edge of the box. Thomas Partey almost gets to the ball, but Ousmane Dembele gives it to Hakimi, who finishes it into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate. Advertisement Four minutes later, Arsenal got a goal back as Saka scored past Donnarumma after collecting the ball from a deflected cross. It was 2-1, but Arsenal needed two more goals to send the game to extra time. Saka had the best chance to make it 2-2 after a Riccardo Calafiori cross went past Donnarumma and to Saka, who had an open net, but he sent it over the bar. There was not enough time for a crazy comeback, and when the final whistle blew, the PSG team and their fans went wild. 'Bitter' Post-Match Reactions Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, was understandably upset about his team's defeat, but his words after the game led some soccer fans to believe he ended the game as a 'sore loser'. Advertisement Arteta spoke about being proud of his team, but believes that his team was the best against PSG over two legs. The Spanish manager even went on to say that there was no team better than his in the Champions League. During the post-match press conference, Arteta also mentioned that he received feedback from the PSG bench about how great his team was despite the elimination. He mentions that the PSG bench told him that 'the best team lost'. PSG's manager, Luis Enrique, also spoke after the game and took the opportunity to shut the haters up. He laughed about the opinion many soccer fans have on PSG playing in a 'farmers league'. This comes from the French champions dominating Ligue 1 for over a decade. Advertisement PSG defeated all the Premier League teams that competed in the Champions League this season. The defeated Manchester City in the league phase while eliminating Liverpool, Aston Villa, and now Arsenal in the knockout stage. Luis Enrique was asked about Arteta's words about the PSG bench, saying that 'the best team lost' today. Enrique shook his head and disagreed with the words of the Arsenal manager. Enrique and PSG will look forward to the Champions League Final as they are on course to win a treble. His team will play in the Coupe de France Final against Stade Reims on May 24th, a week before the Champions League Final. Related: Salah Reveals PSG Admiration As They Chase Champions League Glory

The Football Daily Premier League Awards 2024-25

Welcome to the inaugural Football Daily Premier League Awards, a celebration of a dramatic, eventful 2024-25 season and definitely not an attempt to get half the Football Daily Christmas Awards done early so that we can get lost in eggnog a few days earlier in December. Enjoy! The Fauja Singh Award For Finding A New Interest In Your Dotage Meet Mo Salah 2.0, a once single-minded forward who now loves creating goals almost as much as scoring them. Salah's dual threat made him the best player in the league by a mile, though we're a bit worried about Sadio Mané's cognitive dissonance. The Gus Poyet Award For Giving In To Roy Keane At Old Trafford Sky's Kelly Cates for her deadpan reference to Roy Keane's cardigan during Chelsea's visit to Old Trafford. 'Olivia Rodrigo is watching on from the stands and we've got Cardi B in the studio as well!' Even Keane, whose instinct in such situations is to activate the death stare, saw the funny side. The Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli Award For Jumping The Shark After five years of therapy working exclusively on this issue, Football Daily thought it had made peace with the fact that everyone in the Premier League has a busted moral compass that points exclusively in the direction of their self-interest. Then, on Sunday, Ashley Young gave Anthony Gordon an extended lecture about diving, and we're back on the couch first thing tomorrow morning. The Bukayo Saka Award For Sheer Likability For one season only, Saka will have to share the award with Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta. He runs himself into the ground every game, he gives interviews full of personality and playfulness, he hijacks interviews with Eberechi Eze to shout 'HE'S THE MAN' repeatedly; and, like Saka, he scores goal-of-the-season contenders at the Emirates. Mateta and Eze symbolise possibly the most likable team in the league. The 5am Club Award For Finishing Early Brentford, who made history by scoring inside the first minute of three consecutive Premier League games in September. Reality bit thereafter; in their next league game, Nathan Collins didn't give them the lead until the 76th second. The Dennis Bergkamp Award For Wearing Boots Made Of Velvet And Velcro Kaoru Mitoma. His droolicious goal against Chelsea began with a first touch from the heavens as the ball dropped over his shoulder; the other touches were adequate as well. We could write 8,000 words on it but you're better off just watching it. And watching it. And watching it some more until you realise it's 4.49am tomorrow morning and you need to be up in 11 minutes. The Wayne Rooney Remember The Name Award Myles Lewis-Skelly made history at the Etihad in September when he was booked before making his Premier League debut. That came a few minutes later, whereupon a borderline feral Erling Haaland impolitely enquired as to his identity. It's increasingly hard to remember a time when we didn't know all about Lewis-Skelly, who went from benchwarmer to England's first-choice left-back in record time. When he scored in Arsenal's 5-1 win over City in February, he celebrated by copying Haaland's tranquil, cross-legged celebration. We'd imagine there was nothing particularly meditative about Haaland's internal monologue when he clocked Lewis-Skelly's pose. The Steven Gerrard Award For Raising The Roof James Tarkowski, who bulldozed an injury-time equaliser for Everton in the last Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. If there was a louder noise all season, we didn't hear it. The Generic Litter Of Puppies Award For Making The World A Better Place In an omnishambles of a season at Old Trafford, there was one beacon of hope. Amad Diallo plays football with the freedom and joy that most of us leave behind in the playground, and what Premier League highlights United usually had involved him: a 13-minute hat-trick against Southampton, an equaliser at Anfield and a euphoric last-minute winner in the Manchester derby. Merseyside police have said a 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs, after a car ploughed into a crowd at Liverpool's victory parade in the city on Monday. The vehicle struck pedestrians on Water Street, close to where the parade had finished, with more than 50 people injured – including one child who was seriously hurt. As of Tuesday afternoon, 11 people remained in hospital and were said to be in stable condition. More than 50 people were initially taken to hospital, with others treated at the scene. 'My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected,' said Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk. 'Praying for a speedy recovery for everyone who suffered injuries. We are all with you.' Football Weekly is here. As is Women's Football Weekly. 'My journey has never been the simplest, and so in true Mary fashion, this isn't a simple goodbye – right before a major tournament. Nonetheless, I know this is the right decision' – England keeper Mary Earps gets her third person on after shocking teammates by calling time on her international career. It was a weekend of finales and farewells across the country. Perhaps the biggest of all came in Lisbon, where Arsenal dethroned Barcelona and won Women's Big Cup. Jonathan Liew watched a club redefine itself, Tom Garry followed the victory party and Suzanne Wrack took in the Katie McCabe celebratory scenes in north London. In the Premier League Newcastle scraped into Bigger Cup despite losing against Everton, Chelsea grabbed fifth, consigning Nottingham Forest to Tin Pot, and Aston Villa raged against the referee. In the EFL playoffs, Sunderland snatched promotion to the top flight, Charlton secured their spot in the Championship and Wimbledon saw off Walsall to bag a return to League One. It's David Squires on … his moments of the Premier League season, with a doff of the cap to Rodgers and Hammerstein. You can get your own copy too. Oh. If you do have any, please send letters to Today's winner of our prizeless letter o' the day is … Rollover. Terms and conditions for our competitions, when we run them, can be viewed . The latest edition of our sister email is out, out, out, featuring this extract on Wuhan's Asian Big Cup triumph. Newcastle have announced that sporting director Paul Mitchell is leaving the club at the end of June. Chelsea are ramping up their push for new striker – they have held further talks over Ipswich's Liam Delap and are pondering a move for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. Erik ten Hag has returned to management at Bayer Leverkusen. 'Bayer are one of the best clubs in Germany and also among the top clubs in Europe,' he cheered. While Ten Hag is in at the BayArena, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong may be out – Liverpool are in talks over what would be a record move for Wirtz and are close to a deal for Frimpong. Elsewhere, Xabi Alonso has been confirmed as Real Madrid's new head coach, while Southampton have appointed 32-year-old Will Still as their new manager. And Pope Leo XVI has welcomed newly-crowned Serie A champions Napoli to the Vatican, while joking about his own allegiances. 'The press says I am an AS Roma fan, but you are welcome! This is what the press says. Not everything you read in the press is true,' honked the pope. Time to look back on the Premier League season with our annual review – our writers run the rule over the (deep breath) players, matches, managers, goals, flops, signings, young players, gripes and broadcasters. There's also our writers' bests and worsts – how their predictions fared – and our quiz. Juventus did just enough to reach Bigger Cup but will Antonio Conte join them there? Nicky Bandini on a dramatic Serie A weekend. Rayo Vallecano have secured a place in Europe – a monumental achievement, writes Sid Lowe. Thiago Rabelo was in Rio to attend Carlo Ancelotti's first press conference as Brazil manager. Lego fan Levi Colwill has become a key building block for Maresca's Chelsea project, writes Jacob Steinberg. Scotland captain Rachel Corsie tells Tom Garry about calling time on her career. Aston Villa's Bigger Cup miss wasn't just about one bad call, reckons Jonathan Wilson. Jack Grealish looks out of time at Manchester City now Guardiola has moved the goalposts, laments Jonathan Liew. And Simon Hattenstone bids farewell to Kevin De Bruyne: Manchester City's genius and a law unto himself. Gary Lineker signed off from Match of the Day this weekend after 26 years on the BBC's flagship football programme. Four years earlier he was better known for his crisp commercials than his punditry. Here he is in one of those adverts – in a series where the tagline was 'No more Mr Nice Guy', poking fun at his squeaky-clean image – taking a £10,000 cheque from Des Lynam (Lineker's MOTD predecessor) dressed as a nun.

Arsenal Agree Five Contract Deals Ahead of Busy Summer Window

Arsenal Secure Future of Core Stars Amid Contract Turmoil: A Turning Point for Arteta's Gunners In what could prove to be a pivotal summer for Arsenal Football Club, key contract agreements have reportedly been reached with several of Mikel Arteta's most trusted names. According to a report by FootballTransfers, the Gunners have 'already agreed' deals with five crucial players, reinforcing the long-term vision Arteta and the club's hierarchy have so carefully built in recent years. Advertisement This development will come as welcome news to fans who have watched the emergence of a competitive, dynamic squad that has consistently challenged at the top end of the Premier League. However, uncertainty still looms over two experienced figures, with potential exits hinting at a broader strategic reset in midfield. Saliba, Gabriel and Saka: Arsenal's Core Locked In Among the most reassuring revelations in the FootballTransfers article is that William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães and Bukayo Saka have all reached agreements on long-term contracts. Club insiders are said to have confirmed that the extensions were 'sorted quickly' and that negotiations had concluded some time ago, even if public announcements are yet to be made. 'These three deals were 'sorted quickly' and are 'already agreed',' the report states, putting to bed speculation about big-money exits, especially concerning Real Madrid's rumoured interest in Saliba. Photo IMAGO With Saliba commanding a current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €79.5 million and Gabriel not far behind at €75.5 million, the significance of keeping these two central defenders at the Emirates cannot be overstated. Their synergy at the back has underpinned much of Arsenal's success in recent campaigns. Advertisement Similarly, Saka's continued commitment to the club ensures that Arteta retains a homegrown talisman, one whose form and influence have drawn admiration across Europe. Youth Secured: Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly Commit Futures In addition to the established stars, Arsenal have also ensured continuity among their most promising youngsters. Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have both agreed to fresh terms, with sources reiterating that 'negotiations have concluded and that these extensions will be announced in due time.' This move reflects a growing pattern at Arsenal, where youth development is not just encouraged, but integrated into the first-team project. Nwaneri, who made headlines as the youngest Premier League debutant, and Lewis-Skelly, a dynamic midfield prospect, now have the platform to flourish within a supportive and ambitious environment. Uncertainty for Partey and Trossard While the bulk of the club's core is staying put, not every player's future is resolved. Advertisement Leandro Trossard's situation remains particularly delicate. As the FootballTransfers report outlines, 'a breakthrough in the discussions was made in February, but the final wage still needs to be agreed.' With the Belgian winger proving an effective squad player, the uncertainty surrounding his deal may reflect the club's broader strategy of keeping wage demands in line with value contributed. Photo IMAGO Thomas Partey's status is perhaps more flexible. The Ghanaian midfielder is reportedly 'open to continuing at the club,' but his situation is described as relaxed on both sides. Should an offer come in, Arsenal are understood to be prepared to move on, especially with potential replacements already scoped out. Agoume Identified as Partey Replacement One such alternative is Lucien Agoume. The Sevilla midfielder, still just 23, has been on Arsenal's radar for some time and is now 'viewed as an ideal replacement for Partey,' the article confirms. While not yet a household name, Agoume's blend of physical presence and tactical intelligence makes him an intriguing option for Arsenal's evolving midfield unit. Advertisement Interestingly, Arsenal also continue to be linked with Martin Zubimendi, long seen as a target to bolster the engine room. A potential double signing in midfield would represent both ambition and prudence should Partey depart. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From an Arsenal fan's perspective, this report hits all the right notes. Securing long-term deals for Saliba, Gabriel and Saka is nothing short of a statement. These aren't just talented players, they are the pillars of a title-challenging squad. For years, we've seen our best talents leave—this feels different. It feels like the project is maturing, and now the stars believe in it as much as we do. The fact that Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly are tied down too? Brilliant. This club is building for now and for the future, and that's exactly the dual-track strategy you need if you want to compete with Manchester City and maintain it long-term. Advertisement As for Trossard and Partey, it's a shame if they leave, especially given Partey's underrated contributions. But the idea that we've already lined up Agoume as a replacement and are still targeting someone like Zubimendi suggests the recruitment team is not only reactive, but proactive. If these contracts are announced soon and the transfer strategy is executed cleanly, this summer could finally be the one where Arsenal move from contenders to champions.

Historian calls for restoration of ancient Mallela Gutta hillock temples of Vijayanagara era

Gorantla-based historian MyNaa Swamy on Saturday urged the State government to undertake the restoration of ancient temples of the Vijayanagara empire, located atop the Mallela Gutta hillock near Vanavolu road in Sri Sathya Sai district. Speaking to the media at the Madhavaraya temple here, Mr. Swamy said that a formal representation was being submitted to the Department of Tourism, Archaeology, and Culture, seeking the reconstruction of these historically significant structures. The historian said that the department's Principal Secretary, Ajay Jain, had positively responded to the representation and assured that a team of officials from the Archaeology wing would soon conduct a ground-level survey of the site. Mr. Swamy said that the two temples on top of the hillock were constructed in Vijayanagara architectural style. 'One of them is still called the Madhava Rayala Sannidhi. Both temples slowly slipped into oblivion and were subjected to neglect and dilapidation,' he said. The historian said that in recent years, he along with local villagers from Vanavolu, and surrounding hamlets, visited the ruined sites to assess the condition of the temples. The historian said that the inscription carved on a large rock in front of the temple was a testimony that Emperor Venkata Raya-II of the Vijayanagara empire had granted land to the temple for its maintenance in the year 1638 of the Saka era. Mr. Swamy called for the preservation of such historical monuments as they would not only highlight the cultural and religious significance of the region, but also serve as a testimony to the lost heritage of the Vijayanagara dynasty.
