Double decker bus crashes into bridge in Manchester

A double decker bus has crashed into a bridge in Manchester, police have said. North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) had declared a "major incident" with 15 people taken to hospital. It has since "stood down" from major incident status. Local media reported that one person was critically injured and two others were seriously hurt. Pictures on social media showed the yellow bus with its roof torn off and emergency service workers aboard the upper deck. On X, Greater Manchester Police wrote: "We are currently responding to a collision between a bus and a bridge at the junction of Barton Road and Trafford Road in Eccles. "Emergency services are currently on scene as part of the ongoing work. In a statement NWAS said: "The trust dispatched a number of resources, including ten emergency ambulances, advanced paramedics, our Hazard Area Response Team (HART) and colleagues from North West Air Ambulance. The first resource arrived on time at 15.10. "NWAS treated 15 patients who were all taken to Salford Royal or Manchester Royal Infirmary hospitals." Please refresh the page for the latest version.

Hit-and-run driver who told police he had 'hit a bird' after ploughing into cyclist and killing him is jailed

A dangerous driver who told police he thought he had 'hit a bird' after running over a cyclist has been jailed for 11 years. Robert Heyes had been using his phone while driving a work van when he ploughed into Keith Brady, 41, along Chorley New Road in October 2022. The factory worker was 'propelled onto the bonnet' of the vehicle after it collided with him head first, Bolton Crown Court heard. He then smashed into the van's windscreen, causing significant injuries, including skull fractures, bleeding on the brain, a fractured spine, three fractured ribs and bleeding on his lung. Mr Brady was taken to Salford Royal Hospital but tragically died two days later. Heyes immediately fled the scene and dropped the van off at a garage for a routine service inspection, telling an assistant worker that the damage had been caused by a 'brick being thrown at the window'. He was arrested by police later that evening and told officers that he believed he had 'hit a bird' whilst driving and had only 'glanced' at his phone before hearing a 'thud'. Heyes pleaded guilty to death by dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen and was sentenced to 11 years and two months in prison, along with an eight-year disqualification from driving. Prosecuting, Robert Hall said that: 'There was no attempt to call the emergency services by Mr Heyes, due to fear that an immediate investigation would show that he had been impaired by alcohol consumption. 'Mr Heyes proceeded to drive to a garage in Bolton to drop off the vehicle for a routine service inspection. 'Whilst driving there, he continued to use the handset to search for the collision he'd just caused. 'He went on to tell the assistant worker at the garage that the damage had been caused by a 'brick being thrown at the window'.' A victim impact statement from Keith's father, Gary Brady said: 'Keith suffered from mental health issues, he was making terrific progress. 'He had got a flat of his own, which we were working towards making a home for him. He was looking forward to Christmas for the first time in ages. He had started a new job and was making a real go of things. 'I often picture him cycling on that bright Monday afternoon, he was probably thinking about work, or what he was going to make himself for tea when he got home. 'I don't believe I'll ever be able to think about Keith again without thinking of that afternoon.' The court heard Heyes had a total of 15 previous offences, including driving whilst drunk and disorderly, drunk in charge of a vehicle and harassment. In one incident he was even caught drunkenly driving with his son in the vehicle. One the day of Mr Brady's fatal collision, an empty bottle of vodka wrapped was found under the van by workers at the garage. A bottle of vodka, WKD and water were also recovered by officers from Heyes' hire vehicle following his arrest. Heyes will be required to re-take his driving test following his release from prison.

Family left devastated as dad suddenly dies days after his son

A family have been left devastated after a much-loved dad died days after his son. Justin Chappell died aged just 28 on Friday, March 14. The Manchester Evening News reported how he suffered a fatal seizure in the bathroom of the home he shared with dad Alan in Tameside. Just four days later, previously fit and healthy Alan, 72, was found unconscious at the house in Dukinfield. The alarm was raised, and he was rushed to Tameside General Hospital for treatment for a bleed on the brain. He was later transferred to Salford Royal but never woke up, and died on March 23, just a week after Justin's passing. Manchester City fans are now planning an emotional joint tribute to 'inseparable' Blues fans Alan and Justin. Alan was a paratrooper and served in the third battalion parachute regiment in the 1970s and 80s. He then became a landscape gardener. Like Justin, he was a huge City fan and followed them across the world. Loved ones say the pair were 'inseparable.' Alan leaves behind daughters Rachel, Jenna and Alex and son Martin. He was also a devoted grandad and great-grandad, his family say. Martin's wife, Alan's daughter-in-law, Kelly Lomas, 46, told the M.E.N.: "It's hard to put into words really how tragic it has been. "Alan was a really active 72-year-old. But just a couple of days later, you're going through the same thing. It's two generations that have just gone within the space of a week. "Now we're planning two funerals. It's been really hard for anyone to grieve. "The only comfort we can take is that they are back together. "I would like to think they are jetting off somewhere together or going to watch the football. They were inseparable. Alan would have struggled so much without Justin and vice versa." City fans are now being urged to take part in two minutes of applause at Saturday's match against Crystal Palace at the Etihad, which kicks-off at 12.30pm. The family say the club are supporting and have shared their plea for fans to clap in the 28th minute for Justin, and the 72nd minute for Alan. "I think it's really fitting," Kelly said. "And I know they would have loved it, as City meant the world to them." She said the family had been inundated with messages of support and condolence from Blues fans. Kelly also thanked staff at Tameside and Salford Royal hospitals, and paramedics, for their 'amazing' care. "He will be very sadly missed by all his family and friends across the world," she said. "We would also like to thank everybody for their kind words at this difficult time."
