C-U nonprofit puts their recovery money to good use
URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — One Champaign Urbana nonprofit organization is putting their recovery money to good use. Salt & Light Ministries got nearly $700,000 from the IRS. It's basically another version of a COVID-19 relief funding for businesses. Budzinski recovers $659k for CU's Salt & Light The organization said they are planning to use their money to pay off some debts. The non-profit's director Nathan Montgomery said he's hoping to have some funds leftover. That way he'll be able to fix their leaking roof, old refrigerators and freezers and update their parking lot. Montgomery said the news came at the right time because they applied for the tax credit in 2023 and waited to hear back from the government. Vermilion Co. I think once we actually have the checks in hand, you know, it's one of those things where, you know, we applied well over a year and a half ago. And so you know, you get to a point where you just don't expect that it's going to happen. Right. And so then when suddenly you get news that, 'Wow, this is actually being processed and approved and is going to come through.' Yeah, it kind of takes a minute I think to set in,' Montgomery said. He said the government created the program to reward businesses for keeping employees on the payroll. And, it could be about six weeks until they actually see the money. Budzinski recovers $659k for CU's Salt & Light
URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) visited Urbana's Salt & Light Ministries this week to celebrate the return of over $650,000. According to Budzinski, $659,589 of Employee Retention Credit (ERC) claims was recovered. However, a partnership between Budzinski's office and the Tax Advocate Service allowed Salt & Light's claims to be tracked down, recovering funds and ensuring the organization can continue their work. 'I was proud to visit Salt & Light Ministries in Urbana, where my team helped recover more than $650,000 owed to them by the IRS. This money will go directly back into our community, supporting Salt & Light's mission to help families in need while also providing valuable resources like financial education, computer skills training, and volunteer opportunities,' Congresswoman Budzinski said. 'This is one of many examples of how my casework team is dedicated to advocating for the people of Central and Southern Illinois.' What we found, however, was incredible responsiveness and attention to our case,' Nathan Montgomery, executive director of Salt & Light said. 'Blake from her office helped us throughout, and the funds we are receiving are going to make a huge difference in our nonprofit's ability to serve our community. We could not be more appreciative.'
