Nebraska football closing in on naming a starting kicker for season opener

As the opening of Nebraska's 2025 college football season fast approaches, there are still several important questions to answer about the team. One of those questions is 'who will be the starting kicker on August 28?' The Huskers experienced turnover at the kicker position, which was impacted by the transfer portal. Nico Ottomanelli transferred to Sam Houston State, while Kyle Cunanan transferred into the program from the California Golden Bears. Cunanan is a touchback specialist. He tallied 21 touchbacks in 2023 and one touchback in 2024. He had 51 kickoffs with 22 touchbacks in total. The transfer is competing against sophomores John Hohl and Tristan Alvano. Last season, Hohl went 10-of-15 on field goals and 23-of-25 on extra points. Alvano only appeared in three games in 2024 due to injury and finished 3-of-4 on field goals and 12-of-12 on extra points. Special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler met with the media earlier this week and provided details on the training camp battle. 'I'll just say this, at the end of next week, we'll name a guy and we'll roll. We got a close battle right now. They've all done some nice things, and we're gonna need all three of them. It's not where you start, it's where you finish." Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT. Contact/Follow us @CornhuskersWire on X (formerly Twitter), and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Nebraska news, notes, and opinions.

Eagles to sign speedy undrafted rookie free agent pass catcher

Eagles to sign speedy undrafted rookie free agent pass catcher Ife Adeyi has developed quite a history with the Eagles this spring, and the speedy wide receiver appears set to re-sign with the team ahead of the second week of training camp. Philadelphia just finished Day 5 of practice, and Aaron Wilson reports that Adeyi is signing with the Super Bowl champions. In June, a day after signing the undrafted rookie receiver, the team waived the former Sam Houston State pass catcher and replaced him with Keilan Robinson, who was picked up off waivers from the Jaguars. A key performer at Sam Houston State, Adeyi (5-10, 175) played in 54 games over six seasons and finished his career with 164 catches for 2,312 yards and 19 touchdowns. A versatile performer, he also had 36 rushing attempts for 306 yards and four touchdowns, and brings special-teams value.

Coach That Lincoln Riley Fired Lands New Role

Coach That Lincoln Riley Fired Lands New Role originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Lincoln Riley delivered one stunning change during the spring by firing Bennie Wylie. The USC head coach and the strength and conditioning coordinator held a lengthy relationship -- including Wylie becoming one of Riley's first USC hires in 2022. Advertisement Wylie has since found a new role. Although it's a non-college football one. Wylie is back in the state of Texas. This time he's taking over the strength department for Huntsville High School, with Football Scoop reporting the move. He'll be working with a school that boasts an enrollment of approximately 1,900 students. He's also going to be close to a school he knows quite well. Southern California Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley.© Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Huntsville High is located nine minutes driving distance from Sam Houston State University. SHS is Wylie's alma mater -- where he played from 1994 to 1997. Wylie, though, will be taking a step back from college and working with younger prospects. Advertisement He joined the University of Texas in 2011 as the Longhorns' strength and conditioning coach. Mack Brown helped facilitate his hire to the staff. But before that he held stints with the University of Tennessee and Texas Tech University -- serving as head strength and conditioning coach. Wylie even delivered a brief NFL run. He was named assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1999 to 2002. His alma mater handed him his first S&C role in 1998 on an interim basis. He first linked with Riley in 2018 while at the University of Oklahoma. Wylie joined a staff that won three Big 12 titles in '18, 2019 and 2020. He later joined the USC staff in Dec. 2021 after Riley's agreement to coach the Trojans. Riley pulled the stunner by firing Wylie in May -- following the completion of spring practice. Former Wisconsin class of 2026 quarterback commit pledges to new program

Former Wisconsin class of 2026 quarterback commit pledges to new program Former Wisconsin class of 2026 quarterback commit Jarin Mock pledged to Bowling Green on Thursday. Mock previously joined the Badgers' class last July, back when Phil Longo was the program's offensive coordinator. Longo was then fired in mid-November after a 16-13 loss to No. 1 Oregon dropped his offense's outputs to 363.1 yards per game (91st nationally) and 23.9 points per game (98th). Mock went on to decommit from the class in mid-January after the program hired new OC Jeff Grimes. 247Sports lists Mock as a three-star recruit. He's specifically ranked as the No. 891 player in the class of 2026, No. 55 quarterback and No. 35 recruit from his home state of Ohio. Aside from Wisconsin, Purdue was his only Power Four offer. Mock's departure was part of Wisconsin's top-down overhaul of its quarterback room after Grimes' arrival. Braedyn Locke (Arizona), Tyler Van Dyke (SMU) and Mabrey Mettauer (Sam Houston State) transferred out, while class of 2025 signee Landyn Locke (Sam Houston State) committed elsewhere. The program then added transfers Billy Edwards Jr. and Danny O'Neil during the winter window, retained 2025 signee Carter Smith and landed a commitment from 2026 quarterback Ryan Hopkins. Mock now joins a Bowling Green program that has made three consecutive bowl games dating back to 2022. Entering 2025, the team is ranked No. 104 in the nation and No. 5 in the MAC by ESPN's Football Power Index. Wisconsin's quarterback recruiting in the class of 2026 appears finished with Hopkins' commitment. The Badgers' class currently ranks No. 28 in the nation and No. 8 in the Big Ten at this stage of the cycle It will be interesting to watch how Wisconsin's new-look quarterback room, led by Edwards Jr., performs in 2025. That output will inevitably be compared to how the program's former transfers fare with new programs, as well as to how Longo's Sam Houston State team performs in his first year in charge.
