The two accused — Sandeep Shah, a resident of Solapur, and Salim Patel, a resident of Navi Mumbai — were arrested in Mumbai and Sangli on June 9 and 10, respectively. The central agency said that it registered a cheating case on June 9 after discovering that two individuals were involved in duping NEET candidates and their parents by falsely claiming to have connections with officials of the National Testing Agency (NTA) that conducts the examination. 'They assured the victims that they could manipulate the marks of low-scoring candidates in NEET UG 2025 in return for hefty payments,' the CBI stated. To ensure that they are indeed influential people connected with highly placed officials, they would meet gullible parents at five-star hotels like ITC Grand Central, Parel, Mumbai. The accused Shah demanded Rs 90 lakh from each candidate and eventually agreed to accept Rs 87.5 lakh per candidate after negotiations, the probe agency stated. Shah would assure candidates that they would receive details of their purportedly increased marks six hours before the official declaration of results. The accused was in regular contact with the co-accused, who operates an admission consultancy firm in Navi Mumbai, and another individual, who runs a similar consultancy in Pune. A forensic examination of the mobile phones of the arrested individuals (Shah and Patel) revealed incriminating chats containing details of prospective candidates, their roll numbers, admit cards, OMR sheets, and evidence of financial transactions through hawala networks, a CBI officer said. The CBI produced the two accused in court and secured their custody till June 16. The agency did not find any involvement of government officials or NTA personnel in the racket. The CBI is in the process of identifying the victim aspirants and their parents by analysing the phone call details of the accused, and is also analysing financial transactions done by the accused to defraud students and their parents.
