Blake Shinn moves closer to Melbourne jockeys' premiership with double at Sandown
Champion jockey Blake Shinn all but sealed the Melbourne premiership with a double at Sandown. Shinn improved to a seven-win buffer on Craig Williams with victories aboard Cinematic Star and Betwitchery on Wednesday. 'It was a good to ride a double,' Shinn said. 'Definitely not out of the woods yet. 'We'll get over Saturday and see where we sit but seven is a nice buffer to have into Saturday. 'We've got the utmost respect for Craig and the jockey he is … we've both got strong books.' • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Shinn and Williams boast full books of nine evenly-matched rides apiece on Saturday at Caulfield. The metropolitan season rounds out at Sandown next Wednesday with an eight-race card. Shinn missed a potential third winner on Wednesday, elected to ride eventual third-placed Shinjina for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman instead of Tiz Worthy, co-trained by partner Lucy Yeomans. 'I did offer him the ride on my horse and he didn't want it!' Yeomans laughed. 'They're working very hard, him and his manager (Liam Prior), it's good for the sport.' Sandown Race 4 | Cinematic Star "It's another one for @blake_shinn!" Four scratchings on the card blunted any potential Williams charge on Wednesday. Shinn missed six weeks with a foot injury but returned two weeks ago to defend the premiership – his second Melbourne title potentially in three seasons and third overall. The Melbourne Cup-winning jockey also won the Sydney metropolitan title in 2007/08. Shinn nailed the brief on Ciaron Maher-trained Cinematic Star on Wednesday, stalked the speed and scraped the rail to win without going around a horse. 'Good to see Blake get the win,' assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. 'Push the boat out a bit further on Craig.' Sandown Race 6 | Betwitchery Betwitchery clings on the lead throughout in a thrilling final furlong ðŸ'° That's a double for @blake_shinn! ðŸ'° Ch. 78/68, Foxtel 529, Kayo or via our app REPLAYS: â€' (@Racing) July 23, 2025 Shinn dictated the 1400m Fillies Benchmark 64 aboard Betwitchery and survived a late charge and lunge from Chocolate Box on the post. The result vindicated Shinn, who lobbied hard trainers Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin for the ride and race placement. 'Well done to my agent Liam Prior, thanks to Troy and Will and Leon for entrusting us,' Shinn said. 'It's nice when a plan comes together … (Corstens-Larkin) been one of my biggest supporters when relocating back to Melbourne and nice to repay them with a winner here today. 'She looked well placed coming back to Saturday grade.' Shinn is riding Apache Song Kin in the feature sprint.

Improving filly Tiz Worthy returns with surprise win at Sandown
Tiz Worthy enhanced her reputation as a 'little angel' in co-trainer Lucy Yeomans ' eyes with her determined first-up win at Wednesday's Sandown meeting. It is often said chestnut fillies can be a handful for connections but Yeomans said Tiz Worthy 'broke the mould' with her easygoing attitude to her trackwork and racing. 'She's not very big, but she's got a very big heart,' Yeomans, who trains Tiz Worthy in partnership with Lloyd Kennewell, said. 'She's very gutsy and very straightforward. She's very calm, very level headed and eats well.' Tiz Worthy gave away size to some of her rivals in the MRC Membership Handicap (1000m) but proved too strong late for the heavily-backed $1.60 favourite Saluted. Punters let a Jamie Melham ride get under their guards, allowing the filly to ease to start at $20, but the top jockey ensured the Hanseatic two-year-old had the last crack at the leaders in the straight. Sandown Race 2 | Tiz Worthy Once she straightened up, the daughter of Hanseatic rattled over the top of the leading pair under @jamieleekah07. ðŸ'° Ch. 78/68, Foxtel 529, Kayo or via our app REPLAYS: â€' (@Racing) July 23, 2025 'We weren't completely surprised but a little bit surprised,' Yeomans said. 'We didn't give her (Melham) any instructions. You don't need to give a rider like her instructions. 'It looked like she was going to whack away and run second or third but Jamie rode her beautifully.' Yeomans said a race at The Valley early next month could be a possibility for Tiz Worthy but she would discuss the rising three-year-old's immediate future with Kennewell, who is away in the US. She said Tiz Worthy had not grown a great deal since joining the stable but the camp had hopes she would measure up to harder races in the spring. 'It looks like she's improved this prep, which is exciting,' Yeomans said. 'She's a very hardy and tough little filly, so hopefully she's there in the spring.'

Please, Sir Keir, racing is being battered and we NEED your help before it's too late
SIR KEIR, are you listening? Do you know what is going on? Has anyone talked to you? Tax nightmares. Affordability checks. Labour peer frustrations. 1 It appears racing is being battered in every direction. Who is listening? It remains hard to know. I've written before and I'll write it again. Considering horse racing is loved by the King and Queen downwards, it's quite extraordinary that it seems anyone who is part of the sport seemingly finds it impossible to get the ear of the Prime Minister. But while everyone is shouting from the rooftops about the current mayhem and possible nightmares around the corner, whether those in charge of Government have any idea what is happening behind the scenes is just a guessing game. We know Sir Keir Starmer and his wife, Victoria, like horse racing. Remember the day after the General Election? Victoria was having a day out at the Eclipse at Sandown. Not so long ago Sir Keir was also at Doncaster for the St Leger to watch Jan Brueghel land his victory for Aidan O'Brien. And yet, there is every chance the Labour Government is on the verge of lumping a huge taxation on the Sport of Kings that could be the beginning of the end. For those of you who don't know, that's because there is a current Treasury proposal to harmonise remote gambling tax rates, which could result in a raise to the rate on sports betting (including horseracing) from 15 per cent to 21 per cent. It all comes at a time when racing attendances are up - although no doubt partly due to good weather - allowing the sport to remain as the second most watched in the country. Above all that, though, horse racing already contributes over £4billion to the national economy and supports in the region of 85,000 jobs. Why would you even contemplate wrecking that? All this is going on at the same time Lord Allen continues to sit on the bench while he decides whether he wants to become BHA chairman. Many in racing think he is sent from God to make everything all right, although as of yet I've seen nothing on paper to back that up. That all said, everyone knows the governance needs a massive change. We really only hear one side of the Lord Allen 'will he join or won't he join' saga. But I'm led to believe he's put forward a proposal which basically says accept it or I walk. I am also led to believe he wants a hefty salary for whoever he makes CEO in place of Brant Dunshea. I can't back this up. It's just the word on the street. If Lord Allen is the Messiah, though, you would have thought he'd have already been talking to Sir Keir and messages would be coming back to racing about the tax issue. It's been silent as far as I am aware. So Sir Keir. The question is simple. Do you hear us? Do you know what is going on? Young trainer Angus Townley out to follow late master Robbie Laing lessons with Latin Lover
Lessons learned from the deeds of the late training genius Robbie Laing could form the base of an amazing win at Sandown on Wednesday. Laing, who died suddenly last month, famously won the 2009 Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool with Sir Pentire after nursing the gelding through an injury-enforced absence of two years. Young trainer Angus Townley has spent countless hours applying the lessons learned when working for Laing when getting former UK sprinter Latin Lover back to the races. 'I learned to train from Robbie Laing and he said to me, 'if you're going to rehab a tendon horse, make sure it's at least a group horse',' the Pakenham -based Townley said. 'I only need to get him (Latin Lover) to win over 1000m at Flemington. Robbie got his horse to win over 5000m and that's amazing. 'I've got an interest in soft tissue injuries so I'm interested in getting them back to the races.' Latin Lover showed a dash of class when winning three of 11 starts in England, including beating 26 rivals in a Rating 105 sprint during the 2022 Royal Ascot carnival at his last start. The sprinter was subsequently sold for 210,000 guineas (approx. $452,000) at a tried horse sale before he was sent to Hong Kong to continue his career. However, the son of Caulfield Guineas winner Starspangledbanner never raced in Hong Kong before landing in Australia to be trained by Clinton McDonald. But luck again deserted Latin Lover, leading to Townley taking over his training. 'When he was purchased, he went via Hong Kong and did a tendon over there,' Townley said. 'I believe he was rehabbed there before he came out here but he did his other tendon when he was at Clinton's. 'When I got him a year ago, he'd had two bowed tendons. 'He was a very up in the air thing, he had sarcoids on his stomach, which is sort of like a cancer thing so we had to have those lasered off.' • Brad Waters' Monday Racebook: Horses to follow from Caulfield on Saturday Rehabilitating tendon injuries is a time consuming exercise, requiring enormous amounts of patience while horses slowly regain strength and fitness. Townley said he has not given Latin Lover much work on the track, preferring lower impact methods to get the sprinter fit to resume in Wednesday's MRC Membership Feel The Thrill Handicap (1000m). 'We rehabbed him and gave him plenty of time off,' Townley said. 'We ran him out in a seven-acre paddock with our mares for six months at one point. 'We brought him in, rehabbed him, water walked him and all that stuff but he's never taken a backward step. • 'She's left a big footprint': 20 years on, Boss and the Diva still inspire a nation 'I pretty much hand-walked him at the track for over six weeks and had him in the pool and on the water walker, then we gave him another spell. 'We brought him back in but we've hardly worked this horse on the track. 'We just went the traditional way of training with lots of long, slow work like he would have had at Newmarket or wherever he was trained in England. 'We've given him two jumpouts and maybe three hard gallops.' Latin Lover has won two jumpouts in the lead-up to his racing return, the last of which was in ground Townley described as 'bottomless' at Pakenham on July 1. The six-year-old is an $18 chance to score at his Australian debut. But Townley was unsure how his charge would perform at his first run for 1122 days. 'It's been three years since he's raced so he's entitled to be a bit ring rusty first-up but I think he'll still put in a nice performance,' Townley said. 'I'm expecting a big run on Wednesday but if he could go there and win, he'd be doing it on class alone, not fitness. 'Getting a metropolitan win with this horse would definitely be a feather in the cap.'
