Police step up search for missing Nelson Mandela Bay boy
The search continues for an 11-year-old Nelson Mandela Bay child, who went missing almost three weeks ago. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit sought the community's assistance in tracing the boy, who left home on Saturday, June 28, and has not been seen since. Janse van Rensburg said Jaquin Assam, of Bethelsdorp, had asked his guardian if he could go to Central to visit his mother. When the guardian refused, he left the house later that day, telling the woman that he was going to play with friends. However, he never returned home. 'Efforts made to locate him were in vain,' Janse van Rensburg said. The police appealed to anyone who could assist in locating Jaquin to urgently contact Warrant Officer Simphiwe Siyolo on 079-896-7335 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. The Herald

Gqeberha protesters throw poo at ward members
Residents of Wells Estate in Gqeberha launched a fiery (and smelly) protest that brought the area to a halt. The unrest began on Monday night when protesters from Rabie Village, angry over long-overdue electricity meter boxes, dumped human waste outside the local clinic and the homes of ward committee members. By Tuesday, roads were barricaded, a bus and a panel van had been torched, and tensions ran high. Residents say they've been waiting since November last year for electricity connections that were promised to them by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. On top of chucking poo, protesters also hurled a petrol bomb at the local councillor's office. 'Community members started burning tyres and rubbish in front of the multi-purpose hall,' police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said in a statement. 'No one was injured. SAPS is currently monitoring the situation in Wells Estate.' According to Chwayita Adoons, assistant to Gqeberha ward 60 councillor and Mayco member for Human Settlements Thembinkosi Mfana, around 4 000 meter boxes were delivered to the municipality, but very few reached Rabie Village. Of the 985 households in the area, only 40 meters were brought in during a recent installation attempt. 'We wrote a letter to the residents, informing them that the boxes would be delayed,' Adoons told GroundUp . 'We did not have a specific date for delivery.' When the contractor arrived with just 40 boxes people rejected them outright, said a community member who wished to remain anonymous. 'We are all angry, asking one another who was going to benefit from those 40 boxes.' 'People then decided that the boxes should go back, and the contractor should only return when they have boxes for every household.' The poo protesters are also demanding the release of two women who were arrested for public violence during the demonstrations. Security officer dies after gate falls at Gqeberha hospital
A 35-year-old security officer tragically passed away in a workplace accident at Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha earlier this morning, 23 April 2025. The incident occurred at around 4:20 while the security officer was performing her duties. It is alleged that the woman was attempting to open Gate 3. The gate came off its tracks and fell on her. Co-workers immediately rushed the woman to the hospital's emergency ward for treatment. But despite their efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries. SAPS Gelvandale in Gqeberha opened an inquest to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident, police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg told The South African . Police have informed the deceased security officer's family, but have not yet released her identity. Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha has been in the news recently due to a series of concerning events. On Sunday, 16 March 2025, three security officers were robbed at gunpoint at the hospital's gate guardhouse at around 12:35 AM, while they were stationed at the Stanford Road entrance. Adding to the growing concerns, three of the six mentally ill patients escaped from the hospital on Tuesday, 1 April. The escape occurred during a protest by security officers over unpaid salaries, which resulted in a lapse in supervision. Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
