Woman remanded after teen lodges report on RM140,000 phone scam
BESUT: A woman has been remanded for four days to assist in investigations into a phone scam in the district. Besut deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Md Sani Md Saleh said the 37-year-old suspect was arrested at 2.30pm yesterday. "She has been remanded until July 18 to facilitate investigations under Section 420 of the Penal Code," he said. The woman was arrested following a report lodged on July 12 by an 18-year-old victim, who claimed to have lost RM140,000. The victim had received a call from three individuals on July 1, who introduced themselves as representatives of a company and the Perak police contingent headquarters. "She was deceived by the suspects, who impersonated enforcement personnel and accused her of being involved in fraud and money laundering activities. "Out of fear that her name had been misused and that she would be arrested, the victim handed over her mother's jewellery to an unknown woman at a supermarket on July 2," he said. The victim was promised the jewellery would be returned the same day, but was later told it had been kept by forensics for investigation. "She was then told she had to pay a bail sum of RM28,000 to reclaim the jewellery, but instead decided to file a report," Sani said. Sani urged members of the public who have fallen victim to online scams to lodge a report.

Tribunal orders refund for speedometer not up to speed
Sani says the workshop owner kept avoiding him when he asked to have the speedometer fixed. A WORKSHOP in Senai, Johor, has been ordered to refund RM950 to a retiree after failing to repair his car's speedometer. The ruling was made by Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli, who mandated the refund be issued within two weeks. The case was brought by M. Sani Md Taib, 68, who explained that the speedometer on his German-made car began malfunctioning in August 2024. 'I have been driving the car for 14 years without any major issues, until the speedometer failed,' he said when met outside the tribunal at Menara Ansar, Johor Baru. 'Driving the car with the faulty meter was unsafe as I wasn't sure whether I was driving within the permissible speed limit,' said Sani, 68. He said the odometer also failed to clock the distance travelled. 'The odometer remained fixed at 436km, which didn't make any sense for a 14-year-old car.' Sani went to the Senai workshop to have the speedometer fixed last August. 'I bought a speedometer from the workshop for RM950 and had it installed,' said the claimant. Even after a replacement, he said the new speedometer was defective as well. 'I called the workshop owner many times to have the speedometer fixed but he avoided me, claiming to be busy,' said Sani, who then filed a case with the Consumer Claims Tribunal. Those who need tribunal assistance can call 07-227 1755 or 07-227 1766 or visit the Johor Tribunal office at Level 17, Menara Ansar, Jalan Trus.

Korean Rock band Catch The Young says Indian beats could inspire next-gen rock: ‘Imagine a progressive twist'
South Korean rock band Catch The Young, the five-member boy band that debuted under Evermore Entertainment, is fast becoming a name to watch in the music scene. Their songs have been capturing the essence of youth, blending rock and pop in a way that hits with both the old and the new crowd. The group recently dropped a new album, Ideal Type, marking their second release of 2025, after The Young Wave. According to the members, Sani, Jungmo, Kihoon, Namhyun, and Junyong, the band's latest single describes that 'awkward yet honest feeling that comes with taking one step closer to confessing love.' We caught up with the band to talk about the new album, the intent behind it, how they view the industry through a wider lens, and what sparks them to push beyond the usual. Also read: Apple Music's Top 500 songs of the decade full list: BTS, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Drake and more Your new single 'Ideal Type' has been described as breezy synth-rock with a touch of pop experimentation. Rock, historically, has evolved by absorbing diverse influences. For Catch The Young, what's the intent behind blending pop and rock, as a rock band? Junyong: Our motto as a band is to create music that can resonate with all generations. We're blending rock elements that older generations can enjoy with pop elements that appeal to younger listeners to ultimately make music that brings different age groups together through sound that everyone can connect with. India has such a wide mix of sounds, classical, folk, and indie rock. Have you ever come across any Indian music or artist that caught your interest or sparked some inspiration, maybe something you'd want to explore more or even collaborate on in the future? Also read: BTS' Suga is the Eminem of K-pop': Grammy-winning producer reveals why the West wants to work with the singer Sani: I have experienced Indian music style, and what really stood out to me was how they play with their traditional rhythm so freely. I feel like if that style evolves, it could even lead to something like a progressive metal sound with an Indian twist. If we ever get the chance to do a crossover with Indian music, I think it'd be amazing to create a song that blends those traditional Indian rhythmic elements with our group's colour and identity. Is there a particular part or lyric in the song that is the group's favourite and why? Namhyun– My favourite part is the final chorus where it says, 'I'll confess to you now, you're my ideal type.' If you listen to the earlier choruses in the first and second verses, the lyrics are, 'Even I didn't know you're my ideal type,' which conveys a sense of uncertainty. But by the end, the narrator finally finds the courage to confess, which also gives us some courage and strength in real life as well. Since the narrator of the song is building up the courage to confess, I feel like it's a part that can inspire listeners to be brave, too. Apart from South Korea, the Korean rock scene, just like K-pop, has been rapidly growing in countries like India, Latin America, Brazil, etc. India, especially, has become one of the most curious and engaged markets. In a short span, CTY has headlined major festivals and even pulled off sold-out concerts of their own. They're set to return to the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival and the 2025 Jeonju Ultimate Music Festival for the second year in a row. And for the first time ever, they'll also perform at the 2025 Sound Planet Festival. Known for defining their genre as 'Youth Pop-Rock,' the band has its eyes set on expanding global activities next year, and judging by the momentum, 2025 could be massive.

Glenwalk maker Cartel & Bros to expand into six Indian cities by 2025
Cartel & Bros, the Sanjay Dutt-backed maker of The Glenwalk premium Scotch whisky, plans to expand into six new Indian cities by the end of the year. As part of its growth strategy, the company aims to sell 350,000 cases by March 2026, co-founder Mokksh Sani told Business Standard. 'We are currently present in about fifteen states, and our immediate goal is to expand to six cities across India,' said Sani. 'Once that is achieved, our focus will shift to strengthening The Glenwalk's global footprint. Over the next three to five years, our target is to enter as many markets as possible, as quickly as possible.' Glenwalk currently offers a three-year-old expression and plans to launch its five- and seven-year-old variants in August. Key volume-driving markets include Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The brand is also available in Goa, Daman and Diu, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh. Internationally, Glenwalk has expanded to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UAE. The next phase includes entry into the USA, Hong Kong, Nepal, the African region and Sri Lanka. Commenting on the brand's strategy, Sani said actor Sanjay Dutt, as brand ambassador, plays a key role in creating awareness. However, the main challenge lies in ensuring availability and visibility across stores, bars and restaurants. 'We believe we now have the right distribution channels and placements to scale the brand,' he said. On the investment front, the company said that while there are no definitive plans for the upcoming quarters, it is prepared to invest as needed to support its growth. Sanjay Dutt drew a parallel between The Glenwalk and his 1999 role in Vaastav: The Reality, saying, 'The Glenwalk has a strong character, and it reminds me of Raghunath from Vaastav—bold and intense.' Riding on growth momentum, Glenwalk has sold over 150,000 cases to date. The brand is now available in more than 10,000 retail and bar outlets, as well as across 24 duty-free markets worldwide.
