Man dies in tiger attack, 9th killing in Uttarakhand this year

Dehradun: A 34-year-old man was mauled to death by a tiger while collecting leaves used to make eco-friendly utensils in the forests of Rishikesh range in Lal Tappar area of Dehradun district on Friday. This marks the ninth human death from tiger attacks in the state this year. Officials said a male tiger, recently relocated from Corbett to Rajaji Tiger Reserve, had been exploring new territory and moving between Tapovan and Rajaji over the past 20 days but has since returned to the reserve. The area is also home to a tigress, and it is yet to be determined which animal was responsible for the attack, officials added. The victim, identified as Raju (only first name available), had entered the forest with his brother around 9.30am when the tiger attacked them. His brother, Sanju, ran for help, but by the time others arrived, Raju had died. Officials noted that the body was intact, suggesting it was an accidental encounter rather than a predatory attack. "An ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh has been given to the family, and the remaining compensation to follow upon completion of formalities," said Dehradun DFO Neeraj Sharma. The recent tiger movement from Motichur to Rishikesh and Barkot forest ranges underscores the ecological connectivity of the Kansrao-Motichur-Barkot wildlife corridor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience three trade fairs with just one ticket Undo automatica 2025 Undo Laser World of Photonics Undo World of Quantum Undo Visit automatica: June 24-27, Munich Undo However, forest officials remain concerned about rising human activity fragmenting wildlife habitats and depleting resources. "There is an overwhelming presence of human habitation across Chhiddarwala, Nepali Farm, and Lal Tappar. The forest patch near Rishikesh and Barkot is narrow, only about 8 to 9 km wide, which is insufficient and not very promising for tiger habitation. The tiger is still exploring areas and does not yet have a fixed territory," said a senior IFS officer on condition of anonymity. Since 2020, under the translocation project, five tigers have been moved from Corbett and the Kumaon region to Rajaji. This effort aims to re-establish the tiger population in western Rajaji, extending into the westernmost parts of the Shivaliks, reaching Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Efforts are underway to identify the animal responsible and inform the public, said Sharma. "We are spreading awareness among locals and tourists, asking them not to venture into the forests due to the presence of tigers, leopards, elephants and other wildlife. We have also requested higher authorities for permission to either trap or tranquilise the animal responsible. Joint patrolling teams from Dehradun and Rajaji are on constant alert, focusing on the fringe areas," he said.

Ten Minutes with Sarah Allen of Flook

FOR three decades, Flook have been at the cutting edge of folk music, blending dynamic energy with inventive musicality. Flook's fifth album Sanju was released in May and is available on all digital platforms and on The band also just been awarded prestigious 'Group of the Year' title at the annual TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards which can be viewed on line at Flute player Sarah Allen took time out to answer our questions What are you up to, Sarah? Right now, I am rushing around preparing for our upcoming Flook tour of Japan. We've been to Japan quite a few times over the years—it's one of our favourite places to tour. The people are so kind and respectful and friendly, and the pace toggles between super calm and super frenetic. It will be great to be back. We called our latest recording Sanju, which very broadly speaking is the Japanese word for 30, as Flook are celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. Which piece of music always sends a shiver down your spine? Allegri's Miserere Which musician or singer has most influenced you? A chance meeting with legendary free improvising jazz drummer John Stevens single-handedly changed the course of my musical life. From there on in everything I had previously learned about music was challenged and reset; it was the starting point of a much more creative and fulfilling musical journey. What's on your smartphone playlist at the minute? I've been listening a lot to Bonny Light Horseman's latest release Keep Me on Your Mind / See You Free - I saw them live at The Roundhouse last Autumn - they were AMAZING! I'm also really enjoying The Charming Smile and the Glorious Life from up and coming band Wesley. The lead singer Jamie is the son of my good friend Al Jones, fiddle player from The Barely Works. Other favourites include Laura Wilkie's new album Vent and Brìghde Chaimbeul's new single Bog an Lochan. What are your family roots in Ireland? My Irish roots are only very distant, from way back in the 1600s when my forefathers on my father's side came from up around where Brian (Finnegan) lives in the Armagh area, before they emigrated to Australia. What is your favourite place in Ireland? I love the bustle of Galway and the wildness of West Cork. What has been your favourite venue? We played with Dreamers' Circus last November at Islington's Union Chapel and will be back there for our own gig this coming November - it's such a beautiful space to play music and to hear music - almost other worldly. Which living person do you most admire? My Dad. The tune Ninety Years Young on our new Flook recording Sanju was written for him, though this year it will be dedicated to my Mum (equally admired) for her big birthday in May this year. Which trait in others do you most admire? Kindness What would be your motto? Peace comes when you realise that everything that's out of control should be out of your mind too. What's the best advice you've ever been given? Always stay curious In terms of inanimate objects, what is your most precious possession? My Granny's wedding ring. It was her one remaining treasured possession and she gave it to me shortly before she died. What's best thing about where you live? The street where I live, on the shabbier side of Hampstead Heath, must be one of the friendliest places in London; everyone looks out for everyone else. Plus we have the Heath across the road with its Lido and swimming ponds. . . . . and the worst? I'm struggling to think of anything I don't like! Who/what is the greatest love of your life? My daughter, Maisy - recently turned 18 and shortly heading off on her own adventures Upcoming gigs 4th June 2025: Music Room at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall LIVERPOOL 5th June 2025: The Met BURY, Gt MANCHESTER 6th June 2025: Brewery Arts KENDAL 7th June 2025: The Reeling GLASGOW 8th June 2025: The Glasshouse GATESHEAD 5th July 2025: Festival of Flutes DERRY See More: Flook, Folk Music, Traditional Music

Thailand Open boxing: Pawan Bartwal storms into quarters with dominant 5-0 win

Continuing his fine form, Indian boxer Pawan Bartwal cruised into the quarterfinals of the men's 55kg category at the 4th Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament with a commanding 5-0 win over Cambodia's Sao Rangsey on Sunday. India has fielded a 19-member strong contingent in the prestigious boxing tournament, held under the aegis of World Boxing Council-backed Asian body, that has attracted talented boxers from powerhouses like China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South Korea and host Thailand. Hailing from Syupuri village in Uttarakhand, Pawan showed tactical maturity and ring control from the outset. He started cautiously, dodging early swings and waiting for his moment before landing a sharp punch to the face that set the tone. The 26-year-old repeatedly pinned his opponent in corners, and a brilliant bob-and-weave move midway through the second round opened the door for another clean strike. With tight defence and calculated aggression, he kept Rangsey on the back foot and sealed a unanimous decision—his second consecutive win of the tournament. An Indian Army man since 2017 and a National Championship silver medallist, Bartwal has been boxing since 2010. He now heads into the quarterfinals with strong momentum and eyes firmly set on a podium finish. On Saturday, Bartwal mixed his aggressive intent with quality defence to get the better of his local challenger in the opening round of the men's 55 kg weight category. National Games bronze medallist Sanju MS banked on her aggressive boxing style to decimate her Japanese opponent to reach the quarterfinals of the women's 60kg weight category. Sanju blanked Japan's Sarii Kokufu 5-0 while Bartwal fought back to beat Thailand's Thanarat Saengphet 4-1. Sanju, who has made a shift to traditional boxing after winning laurels in kickboxing, is known for her attacking style and went all guns blazing from the first round itself against Japan's Kokufu. In the day's other matches, Nikhil (60kg), Amit Kumar (65kg) and Hemant Yadav (70kg) were knocked out in the opening round.
