Getaway driver runs over security guard after robbery in Santa Ana parking lot

A security guard was seriously injured after a robbery suspect ran him over in a Santa Ana parking lot. The Santa Ana Police Department said the robbery happened outside of the Food 4 Less on Bristol Street. Investigators said a young woman stole two gold chains from an elderly man before jumping into a white Mercedes-Benz SUV. Surveillance footage shows the security guard trying to stop the car in the parking lot. However, the getaway driver did not stop and ran over his leg. Officers said he had to have a few of his toes amputated. The elderly man who was robbed said he believed the woman who stole his jewelry was around 20 years old. He added that he was loading heavy cases of water into his car when the suspect approached him and attempted to help. The victim offered the woman a few dollars, but she refused. Instead, she put a bracelet on his wrist and something else around his neck. Santa Ana police said suspects commonly use this technique to distract victims and unclasp jewelry. The victim stated that he was able to save his gold cross before the woman escaped.

Suspect arrested for armed robbery in Orange County

A suspect was arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Orange County. The suspect was identified as Jonathan Lopez, 22, of Santa Ana, according to the Santa Ana Police Department. On May 10, police responded to a robbery at a shopping plaza at 3321 S. Bristol Street in Santa Ana, near the South Coast Plaza mall. Surveillance video captured the female victim walking to her car at night. Moments after she arrived, the suspect drove up, stepped out and pointed his gun at her, demanding she hand over her property. He forced his way into her car and stole her wallet and a large amount of cash, police said. He fled the scene before officers arrived. Following a weeks-long investigation, detectives identified Lopez as the suspect involved. On July 9, a search warrant was served at his home where officers found the victim's belongings as well as hundreds of rounds of ammunition, two large capacity rifles and handgun magazines, and approximately $15,000 in cash. Lopez was taken into custody following the search. The case remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information can call Santa Ana police at 714-245-8049. "Everything was fine": Congressman says Santa Ana chaos was brought in by federal presence

Congressman Lou Correa, who represents Santa Ana, Fullerton, Anaheim and other parts of Orange County, said during a news conference that "everything was fine" until the federal government entered his community on Monday. "[Sunday] was a beautiful day in Orange County," Correa said alongside other community leaders in O.C. "Monday, we got problems not caused by us but by the federal government coming into our community." The comments were made in reference to Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations that took place in downtown Santa Ana on Monday at the OC Civic Center in the early evening hours by Correa and the Santa Ana Unified School District's social media accounts. After word spread of ICE activity, hundreds of protesters gathered in the city's downtown area, according to CBS News Los Angeles reporters at the scene. The situation eventually deteriorated into violence and the use of tear gas by federal authorities. A statement from Santa Ana Police Chief Robert Rodriguez accused protesters of throwing objects like "rocks, bottles, mortars, and fireworks" against law enforcement. "We will not stand by while our City is put at risk. Santa Ana Police officers, along with our mutual aid partners, are actively working to restore order," he said. It's not yet clear if any injuries were reported. The National Guard did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, Santa Ana's community leaders on Tuesday blamed the Trump administration for the violent clash between law enforcement and anti-ICE protesters, and described some violent protesters as "agitators." "We don't need a military force," said Pastor Lee de Leon. "We don't need these individuals coming into our city and stirring up the agitators and others." Local labor leaders took issue with the tactics used by ICE, targeting workplaces throughout Orange and Los Angeles counties like warehouses, hardware stores and restaurants. During his presidential campaign, Mr. Trump promised to focus deportation efforts on immigrants with criminal histories, a promise many leaders say is going unfulfilled. "Workers are not criminals," said Gloria Alvarado of the Orange County Labor Federation. "We are being persecuted."

‘Is that Tucker?': Santa Ana police arrest man, return stolen dog to owner

Officers arrested a man and returned a stolen dog named Tucker to its rightful owner over the weekend, police announced Wednesday. Santa Ana Police said that Tucker, a Chihuahua mix, was stolen from its owner's front yard in the area of North Wright Street. 'Thanks to our patrol officers' quick action during a traffic stop, Tucker was found in the back seat of a car and safely returned to its rightful owner,' said the police department in an X post. Santa Ana PD attached a video of the arrest in the X post, showing officers conducting a traffic stop on a suspect whose identity was not immediately made available. 'Remember when I asked you if there's anything illegal in the car?' an officer asked while cuffing the man. 'What's that dog's name?' The man responded, saying it was his friend's dog. However, the officers soon recognized the dog. 'Is that Tucker?' the officer detaining the suspect asked another officer. 'That dog's name is Tucker?' the officer then asked the suspect, to which he replied, 'Yeah.' 'Awe man, that's an unlucky day for you,' the officer said to the suspect. The video then switched to body cam footage, showing an officer gently approaching Tucker, who was seen tucked in blankets in a basket. The officers took Tucker out of the suspect's car, and then the images that followed showed Tucker, in a shirt, sitting next to the officer holding its leash. According to the department, Tucker was safely returned to its owner. 'A happy ending for this pup,' Santa Ana PD concluded. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
