Dolphins' Matos in stable condition, remains in hospital for observation after training camp injury

Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos remained under observation at the Ryder Trauma Care Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Thursday, one day after he was transported there by helicopter from training camp with an undisclosed injury. The Dolphins said in a statement that Matos 'has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition,' but they did not provide any other details of his injury. The team also did not say how long Matos would be under the care of doctors. 'It's a really heartbreaking part of the game,' fellow Dolphins offensive lineman Austin Jackson said of the injury, which occurred in the final minutes of Day 1 of training camp. 'Very tough.' The 24-year-old Matos was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and played his college football at New Mexico and South Florida. He was undrafted in 2024 and signed with the Dolphins as a free agent through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, an initiative that gives athletes from countries outside the U.S. a chance to play in the league. Matos, who signed a reserve/future contract in January, had spent time with Miami's practice squad over the past year. Matos only started playing football a few years ago. He grew up playing baseball and basketball, and after moving to Tennessee for high school, popped up on the radar of hoops coaches. Matos wound up redshirting and playing one season for New Mexico before transferring to South Florida, where he continued playing basketball and walked onto the football team. The 6-foot-7, 334-pound Matos started off as a defensive lineman and special teams player before switching to offensive line. ___

Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine pleads guilty to a drug possession charge

(AP Photo/Ricardo Hernandez, File) NEW YORK — Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine pleaded guilty Wednesday to drug possession in violation of his supervised release, marking his latest run-in with the law since he completed a federal prison sentence on racketeering and conspiracy charges. The 29-year-old performer, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, told a Manhattan federal judge that his home in Miami was raided on March 12 and that 'residual' cocaine and MDMA — the party drug known as Molly or ecstasy — were found in his bedroom cabinet. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop two other counts he faced stemming from the incident. The Brooklyn rapper, who shot to fame with the 2017 release of his song 'Gummo,' will be sentenced Sept. 25. He doesn't face any state charges related to the raid, but U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer warned him that the 'consequences will be severe' if he violates any of the conditions of his release before he is sentenced. Federal sentencing guidelines call for between three and nine months in prison for each count, but Hernandez could face up to five years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release, the judge added. The rapper, who was dressed in a black hoodie and who wasn't sporting his trademark colorful hairstyle, declined to comment as he left the courthouse. Hernandez pleaded guilty in 2018 to his involvement with a violent New York-based gang, the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. He was handed a lenient sentence of two years in prison in 2019 followed by five years of supervised release for his cooperation in the prosecution of other gang members. He was even released from federal prison several months early during the height of COVID-19 pandemic. But last November, Hernandez was found in violation of his probation for failing to show up for drug tests, traveling to Las Vegas from his Florida home without permission and lying to his probation officer. At the time, Engelmayer sentenced him to another 45 days in federal custody, saying the infractions showed a lack of respect for the law. Philip Marcelo, The Associated Press

Juan Soto's blunt response to Mets' All-Star snub

The post Juan Soto's blunt response to Mets' All-Star snub appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets signed right fielder Juan Soto to the largest contract in MLB history this past offseason, but a pedestrian start has ultimately kept him off the All-Star team for the first time in four years. Advertisement Soto was honest when asked about the snub and did not run from the reality that his streak is over. 'I've just got to be better,' Soto told The New York Post. Across 90 games, Soto has earned a .263 batting average and a .904 OPS. He has also hit 21 home runs, collected 51 RBIs, and drawn 72 walks. These marks are nothing to sneer at, but they are not the typical All-Star statistics that fans and pundits have come to expect from the Santo Domingo native. 'For me, I try to play as hard as I can and help the team and enjoy the moment,' Soto said. 'Everyone wants to be an All-Star and live the experience of being there, but this year it didn't happen. I was glad I was able to be there four years in a row. If I didn't make it this year, it's no big deal. I'll come back stronger next year.' Advertisement Soto specifically struggled in April and May. The five-time Silver Slugger did not hit above .250 in either month and struck out a combined 40 times during this stretch. Even still, a massive June gave Soto an interesting All-Star case. He cranked 11 home runs and posted a 1.196 OPS throughout 27 games. He has found a comfort level in Queens and is beginning to play like the player who inked a 15-year, $765 million contract this past winter. The Mets will need Soto to play like an All-Star from here, even if he will not participate in the Midsummer Classic. After a roaring start, New York has fallen out of first place in the National League East and is attempting to stay within striking distance of the Philadelphia Phillies. Mets fans will get to enjoy shortstop Francisco Lindor, closer Edwin Diaz, and first baseman Pete Alonso at this month's All-Star game. Advertisement Cabrera elected free agency on Tuesday after he was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. The 28-year-old made 15 appearances between the Cubs and New York Mets this season and posted a 6.35 ERA across 17 innings. In his career, the left-hander is 17-14 with a 4.03 ERA and five saves across 287 appearances. In 292.2 innings, Cabrera's allowed 253 hits, walked 142 and struck out 283 batters.
