From school playgrounds to community events, Hyderabad celebrates Independence Day with gusto

Hyderabad woke up to the sights and sounds of Independence Day woven into everyday life - children leaving for schools in colourful costumes, neighbours meeting for flag-hoisting in their colonies, shopkeepers adding a touch of the Tricolour to their displays, and patriotic songs and short films from school and community events carrying through the streets. In Ramanthapur, ten-year-old Sanvi walked out of her school clutching her father's hand, her small frame draped in a bright saree, the pallu firmly adjusted over her shoulder. She was dressed as Rani Lakshmi Bai, a role she had chosen long before the celebrations began. 'I grew up hearing stories of 'Jhansi ki Rani' from my mother. I wanted to dress as her and feel powerful,' she said, her eyes gleaming. Her father explained that Sanvi's mother, a native of Uttar Pradesh, had made bedtime tales of the freedom struggle a ritual, leaving the girl with an enduring fascination for its heroes. Elsewhere in the city, the Tricolour found its way into workplaces. At Kompally's newly opened TNR North City Mall, retail staff swapped their usual uniforms for white sarees, kurtas and splashes of green and saffron. 'We rarely get to wear something beyond our dress code. I was very excited to drape a saree,' said one store employee. Her colleague, dressed in white Chikankari kurta and green bottoms with an orange dupatta, added with a smile, 'This day is a matter of pride for all of us Indians. Every year I look forward to dressing up, and also engaging with our customers about the importance of the day.' In residential colonies and gated communities, residents came together earlier in the day for flag-hoisting, speeches and community programmes, before rounding the morning off with snacks and tea. The city's roads breathed easier with regular office traffic on pause, though cafes and restaurants brimmed with families dressed in Independence Day hues. At a popular multicuisine restaurant in Paradise, Keval Kumar, an engineer from Moosarambagh, enjoyed a rare afternoon with his wife and two children. 'We all have different schedules and live in different cities. Today we watched the parade on TV, like we always do, and then came here for lunch. It's our little tradition,' he said. Shops and eateries were decked in saffron, white and green bunting, offering discounts to mark the day, while stationery sellers worked briskly to keep up with the morning rush for flags and decorations. The formal celebrations were led by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy at the iconic Golconda Fort, where he hoisted the national flag before a crowd of over 5,000, including 1,000 students. Senior police officers, IAS officers, judges, eminent citizens and locals joined in the event, which featured cultural performances by the students. A medal distribution ceremony was also held, with honours - President's Police Medals- minted in Kolkata and presented for the past two to three years. Over 1,000 police personnel were deployed for security and traffic management, which concluded smoothly. The tri-commissionerates, the State police headquarters in Basheerbagh, and other police units also marked the occasion with flag-hoisting ceremonies. By evening, the formal events had wrapped up and the city returned to its usual rhythm, with markets and eateries still dotted with people wearing the day's colours.

2 city kids spend summer vacation cycling from Sion to Kanyakumari

Mumbai: It's a summer vacation they'll never forget. Two school-goers from Chunabhatti cycled from Mumbai to Kanyakumari over 14 days. After a brief halt, the children — Sanvi Patil (11) and Arnav Bhoinkar (12) — started the return journey with the girl's father, Pravin Patil (46), on Monday — 3,300km to and fro. The main aim of taking the children cycling such a distance was to wean them away from cellphones and other tech gadgets, says Pravin, adding that he also wanted them to enjoy their vacation in an unusual manner. "It's easy for today's children to get hooked to the screen… Sadly, today's kids hardly play on playgrounds. Even carrom, chess or snakes and ladders are played on the mobile phone," says Pravin. When he first revealed the plan to his daughter, she was more than ready. Sanvi is used to cycling from Chunabhatti up to Mulund and back, some 33km, twice a week with dad. Arnav too is a regular at cycling. "The boy's parents agreed when I told them of my plan," says Pravin who works for Sion hospital. Plans were finalised, the bags packed and the three set out from Chunabhatti on three geared bicycles early May 2, wending their way towards the Konkan, snaking southwards to reach Kanyakumari after a fortnight. "We covered about 100+ km in a day," says Pravin. If it gets too tiring or too hot, they take a longer break. Pravin has two cycling panniers strapped to his bicycle with bare essentials for all three of them. The kids have just a hydration backpack (water bags) and water bottles on their cycles. The panniers hold clothes besides nutrition fuel — dry fruits, chikki, nibbles and munchies. They choose restaurants carefully so as not to be taken ill along the way. Largely, the meals are light but nutritious. A stash of bananas is always at hand. Both children, who study at LK High School at Chunabhatti (east), have participated in the Kumbharli ghat race which is organised at Chiplun in Ratnagiri. On the current tour, the the three did encounter roadblocks. Sanvi's bicycle chain broke, Arnav's gear cable snapped, for which they had to call for help from a cycle shop in Kudal. A puncture or two also made them lose time. "But the real problem has been extreme heat," points out Pravin. He found it a challenge to fix punctures as the rubber patch would just melt due to the heat. Curiously, traffic has not been a big issue, he says. Pravin has set a rule for the team – all three cycle in a row, remaining within shouting distance of one another. Passers-by are amused on seeing the cycling trio, especially the two young cyclists. "The children are the show-stealers," says Pravin. Some stop them, bombarding them with a barrage of questions. Others insist on selfies. At one pit stop, a family insisted on paying for their breakfast as a "salute to their effort". An absolute stranger in Tamil Nadu even welcomed them home for a break. The children had a brief word with TOI. Sanvi said she's waiting to get home to tell her friends about the cycling trip . Arnav spoke little. "Majjaa yeteh [It's fun]," is all that he had to say.

As Hit 3 , starring Telugu star Nani, gears up for its release on May 1, it marks a significant moment—Sanvi Sudeep makes her Telugu singing debut in the film. Sanvi has lent her voice to a track that pulses with raw emotion and energy, bringing a fresh sonic texture to the soundtrack. Her commanding vocals and emotive depth have drawn high praise, including from Nani himself. 'Sanvi's voice carries weight—it hits with power and purpose,' said Nani. 'She's not just sung a song; she's made a statement. I truly believe she's headed for great things in the industry.' Sanvi's foray into music has been anything but ordinary. She first turned heads with her work on the teaser of Jimmy, where she wrote and performed an English track that quickly went viral.
