Everyone's obsessed with butter yellow this summer

Courtesy of Valentino It started with a splash. At the 2025 Oscars, Timothée Chalamet—post-polarising yet great SAG Awards speech—made his Academy Awards appearance in a look that was spot on for him; a true-to-his-nature sartorial twist that came in the form of a monochromatic suit designed by Sarah Burton for Givenchy herself. The hue of choice? An unbounded showing of butter yellow. Timothée Chalamet's monochromatic Givenchy suit designed by Sarah Burton. Getty Many may have expected the A Complete Unknown actor to lean fully into his method dressing ways and complete the Bob Dylan-esque circuit with a look that was more Bob Dylan than Bob Dylan himself. But this was Timmy we were talking about, the one who's always bound to pull something out of his Wonka hat, like attending his own lookalike contest, doing an IG live where he dances to 'I Gotta Feeling' or riding up to the Oscars in a little yellow suit. But perhaps the latter had a couple more legs to stand on. After all, it was only months before that his own co-star, Elle Fanning, delivered another buttery smooth moment—whilst on the press tour of their film together at that. Only hers was a column satin gown, and Prada. Elle Fanning in a satin column gown from Prada. Getty It was a sign of the times to come. For whilst Chalamet and Fanning may have been the few initial adopters of the buttery shade, the runways have been pointing in that direction for months at a go. Jacquemus took the lead with their viral La Casa show for fall/winter 2024 in the summer of June last year. Peppered all through the collection were moments in which the soft yet striking hue shone through. Pivoting to the spring/summer 2025 collections unveiled later in the year, the specific shade ruled all over the runways—from Toteme to Chloé and Valentino. Toteme spring/summer 2025 collection. Courtesy of Valentino Of course, this naturally trickled down to what celebrities were seen sporting amid the spring season, with many more adopting the colour for both the red carpet and other dressy days under the sun. The recent Cannes season alone tells it as it is. This year's jury president Juliette Binoche stepped out in a full summer-ready look from Jacquemus. Filipina actress Kylie Verzosa was radiant in her floral appliqué gown by Mark Bumgarner. And then there was looking equal parts chuffed and casual in his Dior pieces. How the pearl is making a dramatic new statement – think less twinset, more modern-day diva thanks to Givenchy, Chanel, Mikimoto, Tiffany & Co and Huishan Zhang

When Sarah Burton showcased her debut collection for Givenchy in March, it felt like a strong, contemporary interpretation of the maison's classic style – less Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's and more modern-day diva. Burton had been inspired by archival patterns of Hubert de Givenchy's original 1952 debut that were found during renovations of his first atelier. She took those structured silhouettes and gave them a dramatic, up-to-the-minute turn in pieces like a jewelled top with broken-chandelier elements and glass pearls, and lots of outlandishly large pearl earrings. Sarah Burton's debut collection at Givenchy at the autumn/winter 2025 shows featured this show-stopping jewel top. Photo: Givenchy Burton was not alone in her inspiration. Chanel is synonymous with pearls, but the brand's autumn/winter 2025 catwalk saw the volume increase dramatically, creating a cross-body loop graduating in diameter from 2mm on the shoulder to at least 5mm draped on the hip. There were also colourful long-line knits layered with extra long sautoirs of enormous pearls. Advertisement Meanwhile, golf ball-sized pearls dangled from the lobes of models at Huishan Zhang. They were dressed in chic pinstripe pantsuits and 60s style brocade evening gowns for a collection inspired by the rebellious style of Edie Sedgwick, the American heiress and Andy Warhol muse who died aged 28, as well as the glamour of the Valley of the Dolls, Jacqueline Susann's novel set in 1960s California. 'I used oversized, eye-catching pearls to flip the idea of traditional femininity,' explains Zhang. ' Pearls are usually seen as classic and proper, but here they're bold and theatrical – a statement about rewriting the rules and celebrating women who define themselves on their own terms.' A model walks the runway at the Huishan Zhang autumn/winter 2025 show wearing oversized pearl earrings. Photo: Huishan Zhang These ballooning pearls are, of course, far larger than what nature can provide. But their popularity on the catwalk and among stylists has put large pearls, natural and otherwise, in the spotlight. The largest natural pearls are the saltwater South Sea and Tahitian species, whose allure is drawing a new, younger fan base. 'There's definitely been a strong resurgence of interest in bold, large-scale pearl pieces but also pearl jewellery in general,' says Ruby Autore, who is head of marketing at the family-run Autore Group, one of the world's largest South Sea pearl companies. She points out how short strands have become especially popular, offering a contemporary edge to a classic look; Autore's drop earrings featuring sizeable South Sea pearls are a consistent bestseller and in high demand. 'Clients and stylists alike are gravitating towards these impactful designs that showcase the beauty of the pearl,' she says. Best dressed stars at Cannes Film Festival 2025: Our fashion writer's verdict

It's the esteemed film festival that once attempted to put a ban on flat shoes — and this year decreed a hard no on large trains and nudity — and thus, fashion's favourite 'naked' dresses. Yes, Cannes is back: the most high-octane — and, ahem, high-maintenance — red carpet in the world. So who is keeping to the dress code? We'll update you on our favourite looks here. This is quite fabulous — not least because it is the work of the Princess of Wales's wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton, in her new role as creative director of Givenchy. Why wear a frock when you can wear a killer acid-yellow mini kimono? Sequins, feathers and slightly sheer — yet elegant too. Of course, it's Prada.
