Former Nanaimo resident providing 'comfort kits' for victims of sexual assault
Sarah Sherman knows what it means to have nothing. After 18 years of domestic abuse and terror, Sherman's estranged husband broke into her home, sexually assaulted and tried to kill her, threatened to kill their two children, and died in a car wreck while trying to evade police. After undergoing a gruelling, hours-long forensic sexual assault exam at a Nanaimo hospital, the police kept her clothing as evidence. 'I was released wearing paper hospital booties, paper maternity underwear, no bra, and a two-piece hot pink velour outfit that didn't fit me,' said Sherman, the founder of We're Here For You Canada , a registered charity that provides 'Comfort Kits' that include toiletries and clothing to survivors of sexual assault or intimate partner violence and have gone through a medical exam. Leaving the hospital after enduring the worst experience of her life felt like a walk of shame. 'It felt like everyone knew what I had been through.' Sherman didn't want anyone to feel like she did that day. 'Everyone deserves dignity and respect,' said Sherman, who still deals with the trauma of what happened that November day in 2004. Although she was able to escape and call police after the attack, her former husband managed to pick up her youngest daughter from school. When he saw the police behind him, he drove into another car. The resulting wreck killed him, a child in the other car, and seriously injured one other person. Their daughter was seriously injured, but survived. It took Sherman many years to find her voice, and begin to speak about the tragedy. In December 2021, nearly 20 years later, it was time to speak out. 'I had to tell my story in order to help others,' said Sherman. 'I had been carrying so much guilt and shame. I want survivors to know they are not alone, they shouldn't be ashamed, and they haven't done anything wrong.' She also hopes that no survivor ever has to leave the hospital partially dressed and carrying their belongings in a blue and white plastic bag, feeling like others might be speculating about what happened to them. Each kit contains toiletries, a gift card for a meal, new clothing that fits properly, footwear, information on supports, and a carry bag that is discrete and new so survivors can have dignity, respect and privacy, said Sherman, who recently shared her story in the short CBC documentary Behind Closed Doors directed by Robert Gow. 'Her charity highlights a need in the Canadian medical system that most people are not aware of. No one wants to talk about the lack of resources for sexual assault survivors,' said Gow. 'Beyond that, she is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. This story shows that hope and a happy life is possible after experiencing so much horror.' Sherman, who now lives in New Brunswick, said it was important to her to launch the charity in Nanaimo, where the incident occurred, but she hopes to expand the project across Canada. 'It's a gradual process because it's all volunteer-run,' said Sherman. With every opportunity she gets to share her story, including the short film, Sherman feels a little stronger. 'I want people to know they are not alone. There is help.' dryan@

Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang breaks silence on why he was so emotional during season 50 finale
Bowen Yang has responded to speculation he is leaving Saturday Night Live after he was caught on camera saying an emotional goodbye to fellow cast member Sarah Sherman. During the final moments of the season finale last week, Yang and Sherman could be seen hugging closely before looking at each other sadly - both appearing to have tears in their eyes. The 34-year-old has since defended the emotional moment, explaining he was 'processing' that the season was actually over. 'I think you get to a point at where you understand that you're on the downswing of things. I think I was just processing that being one of the last "last nights" that I would have, and that is a huge thing,' Yang told Entertainment Weekly. He added that he always has a similar response during the show's season finale. 'Every finale at goodnights something leaves my body because I'm just relieved from all that happened in that season and this was a big one,' he continued. 'We went through a lot, so many fun memories. I think that was probably what was registering. I was just like, oh, I need to savor these moments before I don't have them anymore,' he added. However, the actor and podcaster avoided giving a straight answer to whether or not he will be returning for Season 51. 'No, we're not doing that,' he coyly responded, refusing to answer the question. Fans were horrified by the prospect of the fan-favorite leaving, taking to social media to share their disappointment. 'If Bowen's actually leaving I don't know how to feel. On one hand, I will always miss him on the show. On the other hand, he's had one of the most successful SNL careers of this era and it would be an appropriate time if he wants to pursue other things (we all know how it was with Wicked),' one user wrote. 'It looked like Bowen was having long heartfelt hugs with everyone so he's my only guess to be leaving. Would explain some of the sketches they did for him,' shared another. Someone else wrote: 'Okay upon waking up and seeing the full goodnights I think we worked ourselves up over nothing for a chunk of the SNL cast but Bowen is definitely gone…' 'Okay him waving though… it really feels like Bowen's leaving,' another agreed. Yang started at SNL in 2018 as a writer, and was promoted to a cast member the year after. The podcast host and actor recently starred in the Wedding Banquet and Wicked, and will be seen on big screens again later in the year with Wicked: For Good. Fans were horrified by the prospect of the fan-favorite leaving, taking to social media to share their disappointment Thank you, Scarlett Johansson, Bad Bunny, Mike Myers, and RaiNao! Goodnight! — Saturday Night Live - SNL (@nbcsnl) May 18, 2025 Bad Bunny, 31, was the musical guest for the season 50 finale, alongside host Scarlett Johansson, 40, and Mike Myers, 61. It wasn't just Yang's tearful goodbye that was noticed by viewers. During the closing segment, comedian and long-running cast member Colin Jost popped into frame and handed his wife the flowers before stealing a sweet onscreen kiss. Fans went wild on social media for the smooch, raving about the romantic moment between the couple. 'Omg, I'm in tears, Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost on SNL,' one person said. 'Power couple energy on full display,' said another. 'They always bring great energy together,' a third person said. 'I hate how I can tell how deep in love they are just by this kiss,' someone else wrote. The actress, who shares a three-year-old son, Cosmo, with her husband, broke a record as she became the first woman to host the show seven times.

‘Saturday Night Live' Wraps Season 50 With No Cast Goodbyes In Finale As NBC Series Prepares For Departures
There were jokes about cast member Sarah Sherman leaving and Weekend Update's Colin Jost replacing Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels, there were long hugs during the curtain call but no real indications of the changes to come during the Season 50 finale of the venerable NBC sketch comedy series. And changes are likely to come with a 17-member cast that features six veterans who have been on the show for seven or more seasons: Jost, Michael Che, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim as well as Kenan Thompson, the longest-tenured SNL cast member in history at 22 years. More from Deadline Scarlett Johansson Ushers In 'SNL' Season 50 Finale With Musical Tribute Set To Billy Joel's 'Piano Man' — And Joke That Sarah Sherman Is Leaving 'Saturday Night Live' Opens With 'Fake' Donald Trump Defending Qatar's 'Gift' Of A Jumbo Jet — An Hour After The Real POTUS Did The Same Chris Parnell Says He "Never Really Knew" Why He Was Let Go And Then Rehired By 'SNL' Saturday Night Live stopped giving longtime cast members sendoffs in the season finale like the star-studded goodbye Kristen Wiig received in May 2012 after seven years on the show. There were flowers during tonight's curtain call, but they were from Jost to the finale's host, his wife Scarlett Johansson. (You can watch it in full below. On NBC, the goodbye ended abruptly amid Johansson's speech as the network cut to a promo for the Suits LA finale, leaving some fans wondering whether they didn't miss cast members bidding farewell.) Of the current longtimers, only Che has said publicly that they would be leaving after this season, but it was during a stand-up performance, and he has also said that in the past. He didn't give any hints of a pending exit in tonight's closer. Several other veteran SNL cast members have alluded in interviews and social media posts that they may leave but there were no signs of that in the finale either, like the way Kate McKinnon got choked up in her final episode. RELATED: It was largely business as usual. And, surprisingly, it was one of the busiest current cast members from the more recent SNL additions, Sarah Sherman, who was called out by Johansson in her opening monologue. 'It's been a great season / and Sarah is leaving / we're all gonna miss you next year,' Johansson sang, to which shocked Sherman responded, 'Wait, what? Did you guys hear something? What do you mean leaving?' It was a joke; Sherman likely was picked because she is not a departure suspect. During the curtain call at the end of the episode, Sherman was one of two cast members Bowen Yang was seen giving lengthy embraces to, along with Nwodim. While he has been an SNL cast member for six seasons, Yang has been on the show for seven, having started as a writer. And he has seen his feature career explode, opening new opportunities for one of SNL's MVPs. The finale also addressed wide spread speculation that Jost is among the top contenders to succeed Michaels at the helm of SNL when he retires. Michaels had suggested that would leave after the show's milestone 50th anniversary but subsequently walked that back, saying that there was 'no immediate plan' for him to step down. RELATED: In the latest edition of Weekend Update's infamous — and hugely popular — semi-annual Joke Swap between Che and Jost, the latter had to open with this line he was made to read: 'It's SNL's 50th season, so I want to take a moment to say something to our boss, Lorne Michaels. Lorne, retire b*tch! Let me run the show.' Jost had to revisit the subject at the end of the segment when he was prompted to put on red lipstick before saying another line written for him by Che, 'Lorne, I'll do anything to run this show.' Later, during the curtain call, Jost's wife, Johansson, gave Michaels a shoutout, congratulating him on SNL's 50-year run. 'You are a singular man, we love you and thank you,' she said. It is unclear when we will get news on departing SNL cast members. Traditionally, veterans who decide to leave make the announcement in the weeks following the season finale. After taking some time off, Michaels gets back to it by July, with decisions who would not be asked back usually made in August-early September. Scarlett Johansson Brings 50th Season of 'SNL' to a Low-key Close
'Saturday Night Live' was more reflective than festive in the final episode of its 50th season. Scarlett Johansson, who set a record for a woman with her seventh appearance as host, used her monologue to lead most of the current cast of the NBC sketch institution in a song sung to the tune of Billy Joel's 'Piano Man." The performance looked back on an eventful year that included an election, an epic anniversary special and a star-studded concert. 'Sing us a song, it's your monologue, the 50th season is through,' Johansson sang, along with Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner and others. 'It's lasting forever, we did it together, and we got to spend it with you." Johansson teased, then took back, a guest appearance that would have been in keeping with the season's excess of guest stars, The Associated Press said. 'Ladies and gentlemen, Billy Joel!' she shouted, before adding, 'wrote this song.' No post-season cast departures have been announced, so no emotional farewells were necessary, but Johansson and the cast joked in the song that Sarah Sherman would be gone. 'It's been a great season and Sarah is leaving, we're all gonna miss you next year!" they sang. A stunned Sherman replied, 'Wait, what? Did you guys hear something?' Johansson's husband, Colin Jost, is a writer on the show and anchor of the 'Weekend Update' segment. Jost and co-anchor Michael Che returned to their annual season-finale tradition of writing and being forced to deliver wildly inappropriate jokes for each other. Johansson is the subject of many of the Che-written jokes, so this year Jost compelled Che to bring her out and apologize for once comparing part of her body to 'Costco roast beef.' The 50th season brought much media discussion of who might run the show should 80-year-old creator Lorne Michaels ever step down. Some have suggested Jost might replace Michaels and Che forced Jost to address the issue with one of the jokes written for him. 'It's SNL's 50th season, so I want to take a moment to say something to our boss,' Jost said. 'Lorne, retire, bitch! let me run the show.' Jost also appeared in a pre-recorded, behind-the-scenes bit where Johansson has torrid sex with Yang after she confesses to Nwodim and Gardner that she has a crush on him, and learns he has only been publicly pretending to be gay 'for the clout.' Johansson has her heart broken when she learns Yang also has been hooking up with Nwodim, Gardner and guest star Emily Ratajkowski. In another behind-the-scenes digital short made by the three members of comedy group Please Don't Destroy, Johansson treats the trio to a first-class flight that becomes a luxe hip-hop video until the men panic when they learn they are landing at the troubled airport of Newark, New Jersey. Musical guest Bad Bunny appears as an air traffic controller, working alone on his first day. As in nearly every episode of this season, James Austin Johnson's Trump broke the fourth wall and walked into the audience at the end of the bit. 'It's the 'SNL' finale, season 50 — worst one yet!' he said. 'See you again in the fall if we still have a country. It's a coin toss.'
