'Sarawak to continue investing in infrastructure, social capital as it's fiscally strong'

KUCHING: Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg today gave his assurances that, despite the global headwinds, Sarawak remains fiscally strong with a healthy cash reserve in place. As such, he said, the state government will continue to invest in long-term infrastructure and social capital. "We will also continue to pursue revenue reengineering through mechanisms like the State Sales Tax, carbon trading framework and public-private partnerships (PPP)," he said in his address at the Public Sector Financial Transformation Conference 2025 here. Abang Johari said the strength of the state government's financial management determines its ability to deliver services, invest in infrastructure, address inequality, and ensure intergenerational equity. "We cannot talk about financial transformation without reforming the way we govern and deliver value," he said, explaining the reasons the state government is investing in digitalisation of procurement, budgeting, and payment systems. Abang Johari, who is also the state finance and new economy minister, said the Sarawak government is also investing in data-driven decision-making through Sarawak ID and digital government platforms. He said the state government is promoting transparency through audit reforms and open data initiatives. He added that financial transformation is not just an accounting exercise but about building trust, credibility and citizen confidence in public institutions. Abang Johari said, for Sarawak, financial transformation is not a choice, but a necessity. "It underpins our journey toward becoming a high income, low-carbon state by 2030," he said. He added that effective public finance is key to mobilising resources, improving governance, and aligning the state's policies with the demands of environment, social and governance (ESG), digitalisation, and citizen expectations. He urged all state ministries, departments, agencies, statutory bodies and government-linked companies to embed performance and outcomes into every budget and embrace digital tools to enhance transparency and efficiency. Abang Johari also asked them to invest in talent development and capacity-building and champion accountability as a shared responsibility.

SUPP Bawang Assan committed to supporting community through frequent mobile services

Lau (right) provides an explanation to an elderly man during the mobile service. SIBU (June 1): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch aims to enhance the frequency of its mobile services to better connect with and support the community. Its chairman Kevin Lau said that aside from addressing public concerns and feedback regarding council matters, road conditions or drainage issues, the mobile service also helps with applications for the Kenyalang Gold Card and Senior Citizen Health Benefits. 'I think every time when we offer mobile services, we always obtain quite good responses from those who seek out these services. So, we will try to do it as frequently as possible as part of our service to the people,' he told The Borneo Post when met during the mobile service at a coffee shop here yesterday. He added that as the Sarawak government has been implementing various forms of assistance, they will also explore ways to enhance support for this application. 'The key point we want to emphasise is that it is essential for everyone to register for Sarawak ID and S Pay Global, as it is very likely that all future assistance will be channelled through these applications.' Lau mentioned yesterday's mobile service was very meaningful, as it coincided with the Dragon Boat Festival. 'Today (May 31), we will be distributing about 100 dumplings to the public as a gesture of our well wishes to them. 'I think what is even more important is to commemorate the deep meaning of this celebration. The Dragon Boat Festival has always been about promoting unity,' he said, adding that the Gawai Dayak celebration was a similar occasion. 'We want to spread this message especially in our society. We are delighted to have a harmonious society in Sarawak, where people of all ethnicities interact and mingle well. 'We hold mutual respect and always practice tolerance, nurturing a closer-knit community with a more unified stance, which has become a part of our Sarawak culture,' he said. bawang assan Kevin Lau mobile services SUPP

KUCHING (May 17): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Kuching branch reaffirmed its commitment to the community by successfully hosting a night counter service at Life Café in Padungan here on Thursday, drawing strong participation from tertiary students and local residents. The event, part of an ongoing initiative to assist applicants for the state's Special Financial Assistance (BKK), was organised in response to positive demand following the previous week's session. According to Youth chief Nicholas Wung, the branch helped more than 300 tertiary students apply for the RM1,200 special living aid over two consecutive weeks. The branch, he added, also offered both on-site application processing and remote support through social media. 'In addition to in-person service, we received numerous inquiries and provided guidance through online channels,' said Wung in a statement. Besides the students' living aid applications, the counter also offered a range of services including Kenyalang Gold Card registration, social welfare subsidies, OKU registration, legal consultations, and document certification. Wung shared that Miri mayor Adam Yii, who happened to walk past the area at that time, visited the site to observe the operation and expressed praise for the team's down-to-earth service delivery and responsiveness. 'The volunteers, comprising members from the Branch Committee, Youth Wing, Women's Wing, and community leaders have provided their assistance, ensuring the programme's smooth process. 'Assistance extended beyond form filling, including help with parental income verification, Sarawak ID registration, and income documentation for families without formal proof,' he stated. Wung encouraged eligible tertiary students and local residents to seize the opportunity and reaffirmed the branch's commitment to continuing services as needed.
