Sarawak media workshop to boost coverage of new economic initiatives

KUCHING: The Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) will organise a workshop to help journalists grasp the state's new economic initiatives, which include technical aspects like hydrogen energy and carbon credits. Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said experts and technical officers would guide media practitioners through complex topics such as climate change and carbon trading. 'We propose workshops for highly technical government initiatives, like those involving hydrogen and carbon credits,' he said at the Segulai Sejalai 2025 Night event. Abdullah noted that journalists' questions often reveal their level of understanding, urging them to prepare adequately before covering such topics. He added that ministry briefings could further improve media accuracy and clarity in reporting on Sarawak's economic developments. The deputy minister stressed the importance of collaboration between UKAS, JAPEN, and media outlets to effectively communicate government policies. 'Cooperation between state and federal agencies with media organisations is essential for building strong rapport,' he said. Abdullah highlighted the need for inclusive communication strategies to reach Sarawak's rural communities across its vast geography. 'Sarawak is large, and we can't be everywhere at once, especially when events happen in remote areas,' he said. The workshop aims to bridge knowledge gaps and ensure accurate public dissemination of Sarawak's economic policies. - Bernama

Sarawak civil service must embrace change to meet 13MP goals, says State Secretary

Mohamad Abu Bakar urges all civil servants to ensure that the government delivery system remains efficient, relevant, and responsive to current needs, in line with the development approach outlined in the 13MP. KUCHING (Aug 6): The Sarawak civil service must be fully prepared to meet the challenges of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. He urged all civil servants to ensure that the government delivery system remains efficient, relevant, and responsive to current needs, in line with the development approach outlined in the 13MP. 'The approach to implementing development policies and projects must be inclusive, holistic and sustainable. 'This means that, as members of the public service, we cannot continue to be in the old groove and can no longer rely on the 'business as usual' approach,' he said in his monthly address in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report today. Abu Bakar highlighted the importance of applying the '3R' principles – Revisit, Rethink, and Recharge – to enhance public service effectiveness. Under Revisit, he called on civil servants to identify weaknesses in existing work processes that may hinder project implementation. For Rethink, he emphasised the need to adopt new approaches suited to current realities. 'Perhaps the current methods or processes were relevant 20 years ago, but they may no longer be relevant now, especially in the context of the global economy which is based on digitalisation,' he said. Under Recharge, he encouraged continuous self-improvement to keep pace with the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. 'As Sarawak civil servants, we must move as fast as the Premier of Sarawak. We cannot be left far behind. If he moves in gear five, we cannot be in gear three. 'We must move in tandem so that our aspiration to make Sarawak a developed and high-income region by 2030 is achieved,' he said. Abu Bakar also called on department heads to lead by example, stressing that leadership begins at the top. 'Leadership starts from the top. If the leader sets a good example, subordinates will follow. We must be the catalyst for change and positive reforms,' he said. He expressed confidence that with strong teamwork, discipline, and dedication, the Sarawak Civil Service can build a more efficient, transparent, and integrity-driven administration. 'Let us together ensure that the services we deliver are always at the best level for the people and the state of Sarawak,' he said. 13MP lead Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki Sarawak Civil Service

He said despite technical challenges, including an issue at pier number 52, the contractor had assured the matter would be resolved soon. 'We discussed about the bridge being usable by Gawai 2026. We hope all outstanding issues will be resolved and we will continue to visit and monitor the progress of this project,' he said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report after a working visit to the project site in Sebuyau today. According to the report, the 4.8km bridge forms part of the Sarawak government's ongoing effort to strengthen coastal road connectivity and will fully replace the long-standing ferry service between Sebuyau and Triso. The RM848.7 million project began construction on Jan 7, 2021, and is one of 16 major bridge projects currently underway across Sarawak. Uggah, who is also the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak is actively on the ground to assess and discuss any arising issues. 'Our aim is to minimise the number of delayed or problematic projects in the state,' he said. He also revealed another major bridge project has commenced at Miri Marina, with a total cost of RM6.53 billion. 'The government's aspiration is for all these investments to have a direct impact on the state's economic growth through improved infrastructure,' he said. Earlier, Uggah was briefed on the project status by JKR Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris, along with the technical leadership from Perbena Emas and the Sebuyau District Office. Also present were Samarahan Division Resident Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang and Sebuyau District Officer Ayurad Iman Bujang. Batang Lupar 1 bridge completion Douglas Uggah
