The initiative aims to extend road safety education to students and rural communities, with the goal of cultivating more courteous and responsible road users. 'And under the Sarawak Road Safety Council, which I chair, we are committed to reducing road accidents across the state. We want everyone to be safe on our roads,' said Lee during the Sarawak Traffic Games 2025, held at Rejang Park Traffic Garden here yesterday. He emphasised the need for collaboration from all government agencies and the community to make this initiative a success. 'With the roll-out of the Sarawak Traffic Games, students can become ambassadors who understand and promote traffic rules,' he added. The event saw participation from nine local primary and secondary schools, including SK St Mary, SJKC Taman Rajang, SJKC Tung Hua, SK Perbandaran Sibu No.4, SMK Methodist, SMK Sungai Merah, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Tung Hua, and SMK Chung Hua Sibu. Lee encouraged all schools in Sibu to join the next edition of the Games, where the top five teams will qualify for the final competition. This year, 52 schools participated in the public speaking component of the Sarawak Traffic Games by submitting videos between July 8 and July 16. 'This legacy has been successfully revived and rebranded in 2024 as the Sarawak Traffic Games, under the full implementation of the Ministry of Transport Sarawak,' said Lee. The programme officially resumed in Miri in November 2024 and has since been held in Sarikei, Kuching, and now in Sibu. Future editions are scheduled for Sri Aman and Bintulu. Lee highlighted that the Rejang Park Traffic Garden, built over 30 years ago, plays a central role in hosting the Games in Sibu. 'My Ministry has helped upgrade the traffic garden with an allocation of RM350,000,' he noted. Rejang Park is among six traffic gardens in Sarawak, alongside those in Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Bintulu, and Miri, which have received special funding to remain safe and effective learning spaces for students. Acting Sibu Resident Christopher Ranggau Unting expressed hope that the Sarawak Traffic Games would be institutionalised as an annual event, offering early and informal education on road safety and civic ethics to schoolchildren. The event was attended by deputy Transport Minister (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil; Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng; Senator Robert Lau; Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak director Norizan Jili; Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili; Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting and his deputy Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley; and Sibu Rural District Council Environment and Public Health Standing Committee Chairman Cr Kevin Lau. Sarawak to upgrade traffic parks to boost road safety education

SIBU: The Sarawak Transport Ministry will upgrade traffic parks across the state as part of efforts to strengthen practical road safety education among school students. State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the six existing traffic parks located in Sibu, Kuching, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Bintulu and Miri have received special allocations to ensure these facilities continue to serve as safe and impactful learning spaces. He said the Rejang Park Traffic Garden here, built over 30 years ago, has been allocated RM350,000 for upgrading works, in line with the ministry's broader effort to restore and strengthen road safety education. "Upgrading these facilities is important so that students can learn and understand traffic rules through real-life experiences that simulate actual road situations," he said when opening the Sarawak Traffic Games (STG) here today. Lee also announced that the ministry plans to increase the number of traffic parks under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), to ensure that every division in Sarawak has at least one fully equipped and functioning traffic park. "We are committed to expanding access to road safety education for more students and rural communities, so that no group is left behind in the effort to nurture responsible road users," he said. Tracing the programme's history, Lee said the Shell Traffic Games, introduced in 1963 through a collaboration between the Sarawak government and Shell Malaysia, had once made a significant impact on public awareness of road safety before being discontinued in 2015. He said the programme was revived and rebranded as the Sarawak Traffic Games last year, beginning in Miri, and has since become an annual event benefiting students throughout the state. He said that the next editions of STG are scheduled to be held in Sri Aman and Bintulu by the end of this year, while today's programme in Sibu involved students from nine primary and secondary schools in the district. – Bernama

Sarawak to build more traffic gardens under 13th Malaysia Plan

SIBU: Plans are underway to build more traffic gardens in Sarawak under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). "The ministry plans to increase the number of traffic gardens throughout Sarawak under the 13MP so that every part of Sarawak has at least one," revealed Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin on Sunday (Aug 3). Speaking at the Sarawak Traffic Games Sibu 2025, the Transport Minister said this aligns with the ministry's commitment to expanding road safety education to more students and rural communities, ensuring no one is left behind in shaping prudent road users. "We are committed to reducing the number of road accidents in Sarawak. We want every road user to go to work and return safely. We want every student to go to school and return safely. We want all users to use the road safely. That is very important," said Lee, who is also the Sarawak Road Safety Council chairman. Lee said traffic games have had a positive impact, turning children into road safety ambassadors. "There are parents who told me that after their children participated in the traffic competition, they remind them to put on seat belts before driving and to stop at red lights," he added. The Shell Traffic Games were introduced in the state in 1963, discontinued in 2015, but rebranded and revived in 2024 as the Sarawak Traffic Games under the ministry's full implementation. It officially kicked off in November 2024 in Miri and continued in all six existing locations, including Sarikei in April, Kuching in June, and on Sunday in Sibu, with future editions set for Sri Aman and Bintulu this year. "We believe road safety awareness must be instilled from a young age. Children are not only future drivers but also today's road users—as cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers. Through a fun and meaningful approach, we can instill responsibility, discipline, and civic responsibility from an early age," he said.

Sarawak records new rabies case involving cat in Matang

A screengrab of Wee during the Facebook live session. KUCHING (June 22): Sarawak recorded yet another new rabies case involving a cat, ending a two-week period with no new infections, said Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng. Speaking during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk', he said the latest case occurred at Mile 13, Matang here. 'This new case once again reminds us that rabies does not only affect dogs but also cats. 'It is possible that cats that roam around in the community get infected through the saliva of the rabid dogs,' he explained. In light of this, Wee appealed to pet owners to keep their dogs and cats within the compound of their residences. He emphasised that pets should not be allowed to roam freely outside. The Mayor also revealed that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is currently being finalised by the relevant authorities to the expand mass rabies vaccination efforts to include cats. Wee advised the public not to wait for free government vaccinations, encouraging pet owners to vaccinate their animals whenever necessary. Meanwhile, Wee expressed delight that the Sarawak Traffic Games was held at the Kenyalang Traffic Garden yesterday to raise road safety awareness among the younger generation. He noted that such competition had not been held at the venue for over a decade. 'This competition will be organised next year to involve as many primary schools as possible. It should be an inter-school event.' Wee stressed that promoting road safety among young children is essential so they grow up to practise and uphold courtesy, which contributes to reducing road accidents. cat lead rabies Shall WEE Talk wee hong seng
