According to a posting on the Premier's official Facebook page Sarawakku, Abang Johari, in his speech, praised Empiang's remarkable contributions across various roles. He highlighted that Empiang held roles as an educator, the spouse of a political leader, a mother, a Senator, an active political party member, and a passionate advocate for cultural heritage. He emphasised that Empiang is known for her outstanding leadership in championing the empowerment and transformation of Dayak women throughout Sarawak. 'Born and raised in a rural area, she was no stranger to hardship. But instead of being discouraged, she turned those challenges into a source of strength and motivation,' he said. Abang Johari also highlighted that Empiang's deep belief in the power of education became a guiding force in her life, enabling her to rise from humble beginnings to national recognition. According to him, Empiang's perseverance is a powerful lesson for the younger generation. 'This book comes at the right time, it is a vital read for young people seeking to understand the true meaning of resilience, determination, and leadership. 'All of Sarawak takes pride in her achievements. From ground zero to the pinnacle of success, her story is a powerful reminder that greatness can emerge from the most modest beginnings,' he added. On the biography, Abang Johari described it as more than just a record of personal achievements—it is also a glimpse into a life filled with values, trials, and victories that continue to inspire. 'This biography is important not only for today, but for future generations. It will teach leadership, humanity, and the enduring spirit of those who dare to believe in a better future.' He extended heartfelt congratulations to Empiang for her courage in sharing her story, and to authors Dr Regina Garai and Prof Datu Dr Neilson Ilan for capturing her journey so thoughtfully. 'A story like this deserves not just to be read, but to be remembered, shared, and celebrated. May this book travel far and wide, touching the hearts and minds of all who read it.' Also present were Abang Johari's wife Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Empiang's husband and former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, and other distinguished guests. 'What I want to emphasise is that Sarawak has immense potential for future growth. We have stability, and we have a rational populace. 'We also have a clear roadmap with policies that remain consistent regardless of who holds the Premier's Office, extending even beyond 2030,' he said during a Fireside Chat moderated by Lord Jonathan Marland in conjunction with the Sarawak Connect London 2025 Forum yesterday. During the forum, Abang Johari shared his vision for Sarawak's development and called for global collaboration in shaping the state's future, according to a report shared on the Sarawakku Facebook page. The Premier said that with a long-term development plan charted up to 2035, Sarawak is well positioned for sustainable investment. He pointed out that Sarawak seeks strategic partnerships to accelerate innovation, technology adoption and green investment in renewable energy and carbon storage initiatives. 'If you can answer three questions positively – Is there risk? Can you generate profit? Is it sustainable? – then Sarawak is the right place for you,' he assured. Abang Johari said Sarawak has a stable government, long-term vision and openness to international partners, hoping that the visit to London would unlock new opportunities, benefiting both investors and the people of Sarawak. Organised by the state Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), the Sarawak Connect 2025 Forum convened key UK investors and business communities to explore collaborative ventures. Earlier, Deputy Premier and Minister for MINTRED Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan also spoke at the forum. Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki as well as deputy ministers and senior government officials.

Sarawak looking into long-term tie-up with LSE

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg (10th from right) with the Sarawak delegation at the London School of Economics and Political Science. KUCHING: Sarawak is exploring a strategic partnership with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in education and research. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg met LSE president and vice chancellor Larry Kramer in London on Thursday (May 1) to discuss long-term cooperation between the state government and the university. The strategic partnership will focus on executive education for the state civil service and government-related institutions, postgraduate pathways and scholarships for Sarawakian students, institutional ties and academic exchange. It will also look into joint research and collaboration opportunities with LSE in Sarawak's climate change, energy and sustainability agenda. "This strategic partnership underlines Sarawak's commitment towards establishing academic cooperation at global level to support its aspirations of sustainable development, policy leadership and human capital development," a statement on the Sarawak Premier's official Facebook page Sarawakku said. Earlier on Thursday, Abang Johari led a Sarawak delegation in a roundtable session with LSE officers and scholars. During the session, he said Sarawak was committed to implementing concrete policies to mitigate climate change together with the global community. "Sarawak is already carrying out measures towards reducing carbon emissions and strengthening environmental sustainability at all levels. "We will also continue to maintain our forest cover, which is currently 60% of our total land mass, to absorb carbon," he said. Abang Johari also called for international initiatives to contribute funds to protect Sarawak's forests, particularly through carbon trading, given the world's shared interest in climate change. "At present, there are no standard protocols for determining the market value of carbon credits. "Financial institutions are also taking a wait-and-see stand on funding green programmes and projects," he said.

The initiative, approved by the federal Ministry of Education through the state Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), aims to enhance English proficiency among students while maintaining a strong emphasis on Bahasa Malaysia. 'This is not about neglecting our national language. It is about preparing our children to be globally competitive while remaining rooted in our national identity,' said the Premier. He was speaking in London after witnessing the signing of an agreement between the Sarawak government and Cambridge University Press and Assessment (CUPA), which will serve as the official assessing and qualifying body for the Cambridge assessment in Sarawak. Following this ceremony, CUPA will be the assessing and qualifying body for the state's Cambridge assessment, said a Sarawakku report today. In recalling the era where Senior Cambridge Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC) had been the standards of educational qualifications for Sarawak prior to the implementation of the national education policy, he said many Sarawakians today are the products of these examinations. In a post-ceremony media conference, the premier said the assessment would be administered by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak. Representing CUPA at the signing ceremony was its Partnership for Education managing director Jane Mann while MEITD was represented by Swinburne Innovation Malaysia chief executive officer Prof George Ngui. Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, MEITD Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, MEITD Deputy Ministers Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee and Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, and Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
