Former Chelsea manager rushed to hospital after falling ill during training session
Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has been rushed to hospital after falling ill during a Lazio training session on Wednesday. Sarri, 66, was reportedly unwell amid scorching temperatures in Rome that exceeded 30C in the Italian capital. That saw Lazio release a statement to give an update on his welfare later in the day. The club said: 'Coach Sarri is returning to Formello and, as scheduled, will lead the training session at 6:00 PM as usual. 'This morning, he underwent a thorough fitness check, more comprehensive than the tests conducted on the players at the Training Center.' The Italian endeared himself to Premier League fans during his sole season at Chelsea due to his bizarre propensity for chewing cigarette butts on the touchline. He did so to combat the rule that all English stadia were strictly non-smoking venues, which prevented him from puffing away in the dugout as he has done elsewhere during his managerial career. While some fanbases poked fun at those antics, he ultimately had a successful solitary campaign in west London. In addition to guiding the Blues to a third-place finish in the Premier League, he also won the Europa League before leaving his role as Chelsea manager. He followed that up with a single-season spell at Juventus before a one-year sabbatical and a move to the Bianconeri's Serie A rivals Lazio. Sarri then went on have another 15-month sabbatical in 2024 before he was reappointed as Lazio manager on a two-year deal last month. In November last year, Sarri opened up on his exit from Stamford Bridge and admits he feels regret at his decision. 'I could have stayed at Chelsea,' he told The Sun. 'I wanted to come back to Italy because the situation at Chelsea was not easy. In that period Abramovich was not allowed to go to England. 'I only saw him at games abroad. We had some telephone calls but not very often. 'My point of reference was only Marina (Granovskaia - Chelsea director). There wasn't a sporting director so the situation was not so clear. So I wanted to come back to Italy but it was a mistake.

Ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri taken to hospital as Lazio release statement
Former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri was taken to hospital after suffering a "sudden illness" while taking Lazio training - but the Italian is understood to have recovered after initial checks. The 66-year-old will be remembered by English football fans for his one-year stint at Chelsea that saw him win the Europa League in his first season. Sarri left the Blues for Juventus, where he won the Serie A in the following campaign before linking up with Lazio in 2021. He spent three years with the Rome outfit before resigning from his role in 2024 as he decided to take a sabbatical from football management. But he returned to Lazio, who re-appointed him last month following the departure of coach Marco Baroni. And just weeks after he took back the reigns at the club, Sarri was taken unwell while leading a pre-season training session. But Lazio were quick to confirm that Sarri had since returned to Lazio's training centre after undergoing medical tests. "Coach Sarri is returning to Formello and, as scheduled, will lead the training session at 6:00 PM as usual," a club statement read. "This morning, he underwent a thorough fitness check, more comprehensive than the tests conducted on the players at the Training Center." Some reports in Italy claimed Sarri fell unwell due to the searing temperatures in Rome, with the Italian capital reporting temperatures of 35 degrees celsius on Wednesday. Sarri has managed a host of clubs in his career after starting out as a banker in Tuscany, a job he juggled alongside being an amateur footballer. He started coaching low level Italian clubs before slowly rising up the divisions and eventually emerging as a top coach with Napoli, who he joined in 2015. Insigne wants Lazio, but embargo could force him elsewhere
Insigne wants Lazio, but embargo could force him elsewhere Lorenzo Insigne would love to reunite with Maurizio Sarri at Lazio, but if the transfer embargo remains even in September, then he will have to reconsider Parma, Udinese and Fiorentina proposals. We had already reported last night that Insigne spoke directly with Sarri about the possibility of working together again, after their fruitful experience at Napoli. (Photo by) While Lazio would be at the top of his wish list and Sarri is enthusiastic about it too, the fact remains Lazio are currently under a transfer embargo that blocks them from signing any new players, including free agents. It is possible he could train with the squad out of contract until September, hoping that by then part of the embargo is lifted and the club is allowed to sign players who are free agents, but that is by no means certain. If it means waiting until January to get back on the pitch, then Insigne really will have to reconsider other alternatives. There has been interest from Parma and Udinese, with on a more timid level Fiorentina also keeping an eye on the situation.
