Saudi Arabia, Jordan exit FIBA Asia Cup 2025
JEDDAH: The Saudi national basketball team have been eliminated from the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup after they lost 95-88 in overtime to the Philippines, who now go on to play Australia in the quarterfinals. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The Saudis faced their playoff game after finishing second in Group C with two wins and a defeat, producing strong performances against Jordan and India after their opening loss to China. The game was tight through much of the match, but with just 90 seconds remaining the Philippines scored five successive points to cut the home team's lead to only one point. Mohammed Alsuwailem then scored two points to make it 79-76 and there were a mere eight seconds left when the Philippines' Ricardo Brownie scored a three-pointer to tie the game. Overtime was all the Philippines, with Kevin Quiambao opening the scoring with a three-pointer before adding another minutes later. Dwight Ramos and Justin Brownlee extended the gap before AJ Edu's dagger triple with under a minute to play sealed the win. Saudi Arabia's Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman scored 33 points, eight triples, five rebounds and four assists, but was neutralized in the overtime period. The loss ended the host nation's bid for its first top-eight finish since 2005. Ricard Casas, Saudi Arabia's head coach, said after the game: 'We really had a good game but we lost it in the last few seconds in overtime. 'Our counterparts had a good shooting game and, eventually, they won the game. Anyhow, I am proud of my team and we will work it out for the next tournament.' Tim Cone, his opposite number, said: 'It was a special game (and) it was a special performance by both teams. The home team really came to play and they were phenomenal.' Chinese Taipei booked their place in the last eight with a 78-64 win over Jordan. They will face unbeaten Iran in their quarterfinal clash.

Saudi Arabia keep hopes alive with 77-73 win over Jordan
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia's national basketball team kept their FIBA Asia Cup hopes alive with a 77-73 victory over Jordan in Group C on Thursday night at the King Abdullah Sports Center. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman led the Saudis with 25 points, alongside eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals for an all-around performance, which netted him the TCL Player of the Game honors. Mohammed Alsuwailem notched a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, with six of their eight blocks. They were the only players to finish in double digits for the team but eight players scored, with Ali Shubayli, Musab Kadi, Fahad Belal, Mathna Almarwani, and Marzouq Almuwallad chipping in with six points. Saudi Arabia play India (0-2) on Saturday at 6 p.m. local time, looking to sustain their winning ways and, more importantly, boost their chances of securing the No. 2 spot in Group C. In other games on Thursday, China secured the first ticket to the second round and topped Group C by beating India 100-69. Taipei topped Group D by defeating Iraq, and also secured a second-round place. Four matches will be held Friday, at the Al-Jawhara Hall in King Abdullah Sports City. Korea plays Qatar, with both teams seeking their first win and second-round qualification. And Iran plays Japan, in a contest to top Group B. The third match is between Lebanon and Australia, with the winner securing the top spot in Group A and a direct ticket to the second round. The final match is between Syria and Guam, with both teams seeking their first win and qualification to the second round.

FIBA Asia Cup 2025 kicks off in Jeddah on Tuesday
JEDDAH: Jeddah is gearing up to host the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 tournament from Aug. 5-17, featuring the best teams from across Asia and Oceania. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Sixteen teams will compete in the 31st event. Group A includes Australia, Lebanon, Qatar and South Korea. Group B includes Guam, Iran, Japan and Syria. Group C includes China, India, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Group D includes Iraq, New Zealand, the Philippines and Taiwan. The FIBA Asia Cup tournament returns to Saudi Arabia after it was held in Riyadh 1997 and will take place at King Abdullah Sports City Hall in Jeddah, which has a capacity of more than 15,000 seats. The Saudi Basketball Federation announced on Sunday the official roster of the national team that will participate in the FIBA Asia Cup Saudi Arabia 2025. The squad will include 12 players. These are: Marzouq Almuwalad, Mohammed Almarawani, Muhammad Ali, Mathna Almarawani, Muhammed Alsaqer, Fahad Bilal, Khalid Abdelqader, Mohammed Alsuwailem, Ali Shubayli, Manaf Alsalem, Thamer Mohammed and Musab Qadi. In preparation for the tournament, the Saudi national team began its preparations and camp at the end of last June in Jeddah, then moved to Istanbul to play several friendly matches against the national teams of Algeria (two matches), Kuwait, Tunisia and Iraq, where the team achieved victory against the national teams of Kuwait and Iraq. Later, the Saudi national team completed its preparations in Doha by playing in the Lusail International Friendly Championship, where they faced the national teams of Qatar, Iraq and Japan. They had a mixed Lusail Cup — a confidence-boosting win over Iraq (91-76) but also losses to Qatar and Japan.

Green Falcons prepare for Gold Cup quarterfinal with Mexico in Arizona
RIYADH: The Saudi football national team resumed training today in San Diego as preparations intensify for their upcoming quarterfinal match against Mexico in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The crucial showdown is set to take place this Saturday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. On the field, head coach Herve Renard divided the players into two groups. The first group included those who started in the recent match against Trinidad and Tobago. They underwent recovery exercises at the fitness center. The second group, consisting of the remaining players, held their training session at San Diego Wave facilities. The session began with warm-ups, followed by possession training, finishing exercises, and concluded with stretching routines. In a positive development, Muhannad Al-Saad returned to full training with the group. The national team will continue its preparations with a closed training session scheduled for Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. (San Diego time) at the Performance Center training grounds.

Saudi Arabia Advances to Gold Cup Quarter-Finals After Draw with Trinidad, Tobago
