Riyadh Launches Digital Permit Parking System in Residential Areas

Saudi Arabia has unveiled a new managed system to regulate parking in Riyadh's residential neighborhoods, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The system will issue digital permits to residents both and visitors through the Riyadh Parking app, without a fee. This strategic move seeks basically to decrease congestion and prevent vehicles from main roads spilling into residential areas. The authorities will firstly implement the system in the Al-Wurud neighborhood, with plans to expand it to other areas adjacent to existing paid parking zones. In the light of this, the decision perfectly aligns with the Saudi Vision 2030 goal to maintain a more organized urban environment and promote quality of life for residents. Riyadh Parking also revealed plans to introduce paid parking in several new areas. Starting Saturday, August 9, paid parking will apply on Prince Mosaad Bin Jalawi Road in both directions, between King Abdulaziz Road and Makkah Al-Mukarramah Road. Paid parking will also take effect Saturday on Makkah Road, from King Abdulaziz Road to the intersection with Prince Mosaad Bin Jalawi Road. Through the Riyadh Parking app, linked to the national Nafath platform, residents can pay for app also uses camera-equipped monitoring vehicles to enforce regulations. Notably, the new initiative aims to regulate over 140,000 unpaid residential spaces and 24,000 paid commercial spaces across the capital. The project represents a significant partnership between Remat Al-Riyadh Development Company, the mayoralty's development arm, and STC. The current phase will also cover twelve districts, including Al-Wurud, Al-Rahmaniyah, western Al-Olaya, Al-Murouj, King Fahd and Al-Sulaymaniyah, as well as four southern districts. Saudi Road Code Now Supports Safe Autonomous Vehicles Integration

Saudi Arabia's Roads General Authority has unveiled that the Saudi Road Code is currently featuring advanced infrastructure standards to ensure the safe integration of autonomous vehicles across the Kingdom, according to Saudi Gazette. Now, self-driving vehicles can professionally operate under various conditions as the new update included requirements for road design and construction. Crucially, the authority has developed pavement layers to handle the repetitive routing patterns of autonomous vehicles and installed real-time communication systems along roadways to transmit critical data to vehicles. In order to promote traffic flow, parking areas now features automated guidance and self-parking capabilities. The adoption of these vehicles fosters the level of traffic safety on the roads, promotes the quality of life, and fulfills economic efficiency and sustainability in the road network. The code serves as a comprehensive technical guide for all road authorities in Saudi Arabia, including ministries, urban development authorities, regional secretariats, and city and governorate municipalities. Interestingly, the code provides stockholders with comprehensive procedural guides and evaluation tools to ensure that road projects meet the required standards of safety, sustainability, and economic efficiency. It will enable these entities to access the necessary information to plan, design, implement, operate, and maintain roads of all types across the Kingdom. The authority has previously introduced Saudi Road Code as a voluntary framework. However, it became mandatory on public sector entities at the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, the private sector is set to officially adopt the code mid-2025. Saudi Arabia introduces major new road code

Saudi Arabia's Roads General Authority (RGA) has unveiled the Saudi Road Code, a unified system for classifying roads across the Kingdom. The initiative aims to boost road safety, improve urban mobility, and ensure infrastructure readiness for future technologies, including autonomous vehicles. The newly issued code is part of the Kingdom's broader efforts to enhance quality of life and modernize its transport network as outlined in Vision 2030. Saudi Road Code roadways key types Highways: High-speed routes with full access control, no direct intersections, and no traffic signals—connecting cities and governorates Arterial Roads: Major roads within cities designed to handle high traffic volumes, equipped with controlled intersections and signals Collector Roads: Connect residential areas to main arterial routes, channelling local traffic efficiently Local Roads: Low-speed roads serving neighbourhoods and commercial areas with light traffic and an emphasis on safety The RGA described the code as a comprehensive technical reference for all government entities involved in planning, building, operating, and maintaining roads. This includes ministries, municipalities, city development authorities, and governorates. In addition to defining road categories, the code provides detailed technical guidance, including: Planning and design protocols Operational and maintenance procedures Environmental considerations Safety and sustainability standards Compatibility with autonomous vehicle infrastructure Technical drawings, checklists, and performance benchmarks By implementing this unified standard, Saudi Arabia is taking a significant step toward creating a safer, more efficient, and future-ready road network, aligned with its national development goals.

Saudi's Roads General Authority unveils updated design guidelines for safer roundabout design

Infrastructure Saudi's Roads General Authority unveils updated design guidelines for safer roundabout design By The RGA emphasised the significance of installing clear signage to guide road users and designing roundabouts in a manner that minimises the risk of accidents and enhances the safety of pedestrians and cyclists Saudi Arabia's Roads General Authority (RGA) has introduced a set of design criteria for the construction and development of safe roundabouts, in line with the standards outlined in the Saudi Road Code. The authority emphasised the critical importance of providing sufficient road width to accommodate all types of vehicles, including large and heavy trucks. It also said that ensuring adequate space is essential not only for maintaining smooth traffic flow but also for safety, particularly at busy intersections where diverse types of vehicles converge. The RGA also emphasised the proper design of medians, that they must offer enough space to facilitate safe vehicle turning without encroaching into the lanes of oncoming traffic. Maintaining clear sight-lines at all points within the roundabout is a key consideration, enabling drivers to make well-informed, timely decisions, thereby reducing the potential for collisions. In addition, the authority highlighted the necessity of installing clear and effective signage around roundabouts to navigate and alert drivers to the correct lanes and exits. It stressed that signage should be highly visible and intuitively placed for both local and visiting road users. Furthermore, the RGA called for roundabouts to be designed with a strong focus on minimising accident risks. Special attention should be given to the safety of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. This includes implementing designated crossing areas, appropriate traffic calming measures, and visibility that encourage cautious driving behavior. Overall, these updated design guidelines reflect the RGA's commitment to improving road infrastructure, promoting traffic safety, and supporting the Kingdom's broader efforts to modernise its transportation systems in line with Vision 2030 objectives.
