Ravindra Jadeja slams 5th century, leads India's resistance vs England in Manchester Test

Ravindra Jadeja continued his consistent form in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series when he slammed his 5th century in the longest format in the last day of the 5th match at Manchester on Sunday as he and Washington Sundar helped India stay steady and aim for a draw. The allrounder slammed 12 fours and 1 sixe in 182 balls to get to his milestone with Sundar also closing in on his own ton. This was another gritty innings for the Saurashtra who almost pulled off a miracle in the Lord's Test a couple of weeks ago but India ultimately fell 22 runs short. Both Jadeja and Washington batted with a strong purpose to save the game, frustrating a worn out England attack. At tea, India were 322 for four after collecting 99 runs from a wicketless afternoon session. Ben Stokes, who looked lethal in his eight over spell in the morning, could not keep up the intensity in the three overs he bowled in the second session. In a 15-run over from Stokes, Washington pulled the England captain for a six and four to bring up his fifty before Jadeja employed the cut to complete his fifth half-century in six innings. With not much batting to come and Rishabh Pant injured, it remains to be seen if India can pull off a draw from here. What made England's life difficult is that left-arm spinner Liam Dawson (0/70 in 39 overs) was not able to challenge the Indian left-handers enough while Jofra Archer too get could not get a breakthrough post lunch. In the morning session, Shubman Gill completed a gutsy hundred after Stokes battled through pain to dismiss a well set K L Rahul, leaving India at 223 for four at lunch. Resuming the day at 174 for two with a deficit of 137, India remained on course to draw the game courtesy a fighting effort from Gill, who brought up his fourth century of the series. The Indian captain fell at the stroke of lunch with the visitors still trailing England by 88 runs. (With agency inputs)

Jadeja's incredible fight earns him India's MVP tag

London: India head coach Gautam Gambhir led the chorus of praise for experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, describing his heroics in the Lord's Test against England as an 'incredible fight'. Jadeja remained unbeaten on 61 off 181 balls but despite his valiant knock, India went down by 22 runs in the third Test. 'That was an incredible fight. The fight from Jaddu was absolutely brilliant,' said Gambhir in a video titled 'The MVP ft. Ravindra Jadeja', which was posted on the BCCI website on Friday. Chasing a modest 193, India's batting line-up crumbled with the top eight lasting less than 40 overs. But Jadeja, who came in at No. 7, stood firm and showed immense courage and grit alongside tailenders Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Together, they batted for more than 34 overs to keep India afloat. Bumrah faced 54 balls for his 5 and Siraj played out 30 deliveries for his 4 before becoming the final wicket to fall to Shoaib Bashir. India folded for 170 in 74.5 overs to trail 1-2 in the five-match series. 'His batting has reached another level. In the last two Tests the consistency and the calmness he brought to the dressing room. I've watched him for so many years and how he's developed his game now, his defence is rock solid, looks like a proper batter,' Gambhir's deputy Ryan ten Doeschate said in the video. India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, Jadeja's former Saurashtra teammate at domestic level, highlighted the all-rounder's temperament under pressure.

Cheteshwar Pujara's Fitting Reply To India Greats Who Slammed Ravindra Jadeja's Lord's Knock

India's finest performer in the Lord's Test, Cheteshwar Pujara, somehow finds himself in the line of fire for not showing a more attacking intent in the final phase of the match. Jadeja remained unbeaten on 61 after facing 181 balls, but England somehow managed to get the other 10 Indian batters out, hence securing a 22-run victory to go 2-1 up in the series. Jadeja's valiant effort was acknowledged by even England players, but some cricket greats decided to point out the little flaw in his approach. The likes of Anil Kumble, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravichandran Ashwi,n and even Sourav Ganguly felt that Jadeja could've adopted a more attacking approach at Lord's, especially against a spinner like Shoaib Bashir. Cheteshwar Pujara, one of India's finest Test batters of his generation, however, isn't happy seeing Jadeja courting criticism despite a heroic effort. "He couldn't have scored faster on that track. I felt that it was because the ball was soft, and the pitch was on the slower side. I guess, Jadeja would have thought that the tailenders were batting well and the team was getting close to the total. And once they were a little closer he would have taken his chances. I thought he was batting well. It was very difficult to score runs on that pitch," Pujara was quoted as saying by the Indian Express. "The only thing he could have done better is to look to score down the ground. Like there was a gap between mid-off and cover," he says. With the ball getting softer with every passing over, even playing down the ground to find boundaries became difficult for Jadeja. His approach remained to take a single on the 5th or 6th ball of the over to prevent either Bumrah or Siraj from facing too many balls. Pujara feels Jadeja has shown significant improvement in his batting, especially abroad, which should be lauded. "For the last five years, he has improved, especially abroad. He has been working hard. If you notice, even on the match day, he does his net practice. He has shown improvement when playing pace," says Pujara "Earlier, it was the case of him not converting his good starts to big scores at the highest level. See one can't get 300 in first-class cricket without skills. But you need to convert, like you do at first-class level, at international level," says Pujara. Pujara, who has also played with Jadeja in the Ranji Trophy for Saurashtra, was even amazed to see how well Jadeja was able to face seamers in English conditions these days. "He is now able to face seamers and spinners equally well. Earlier, he was a good player of spin but lacked a little bit of strength against seamers, which is not the case now," says Pujara.
