Soccer fan dies after fall during Nations League final between Spain and Portugal

MUNICH (AP) — A soccer fan died during Sunday's Nations League final between Spain and Portugal after falling from an overhead level onto the media section below. 'A man fell from the middle tier to the lower tier, onto a staircase near the press area, and unfortunately died at the scene,' Munich police spokesman Tobias Schenk said Monday. 'As always in such cases, the Munich police have taken over the investigation. Criminal police are on site, witnesses are being interviewed and videos reviewed. At this time, there's no evidence of anything but a tragic accident.' The fatal fall occurred during the first period of extra time at the Munich stadium, when tension was high between rival players, and fans were becoming more animated. Shocked spectators called for help and medical personnel, stewards and police cordoned off the area. Medics used a tarpaulin to shield the scene from view as doctors tried to save the man's life. 'We can't give more details at the moment, except to say the man was from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area,' Schenk said. Portugal went on to win the game on penalties. Both coaches addressed the incident in their postgame news conferences. 'Before we begin with the questions, I would like to express my condolences because a fan died in the stands today. My condolences to the family,' Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said. 'We're mourning the fan who died,' Portugal counterpart Roberto Martínez said. 'It's very sad news.' ___ AP soccer:

Fire commissioner lauds work of front-line disaster-response team

As thousands fled wildfires raging in northern Manitoba, members of a specialized disaster response team flew toward the flames. The Manitoba Urban Search and Rescue team, also known as Canadian Task Force Four, are some of the many heroes critical to the provincial wildfire response. They proved their worth last week, while co-ordinating the evacuation of Mathias Colomb First Nation (Pukatawagan), said Manitoba Fire Commissioner Ryan Schenk. 'These are the folks that are on the front lines, working behind the scenes. They are leaving their families, they are leaving their loved ones to make sure people have a home to return to,' Schenk said from The Pas Thursday afternoon. PROVINCE OF MANITOBA Several members of the Manitoba Urban Search and Rescue team flew to Pukatawagan to assist with the mandatory evacuation. The Manitoba Urban Search and Rescue team heads out to Pukatawagan 'They are answering the call.' The task force includes more than 100 members, including engineers, physicians, paramedics and specialists in incident management, logistics, and search and rescue. Manitoba's team is one of six others across Canada and is overseen by the Office of the Fire Commissioner, Schenk said. 'The spirit and intent of these task forces are to essentially be the last line of defence before we are deploying Canadian Armed Forces. These are boots-on-the-ground folks that are decisively engaged in operations and supporting the evacuations,' he said. Buffeted by high winds, heat and thick smoke, several members flew into the remote First Nation after it was placed under mandatory evacuation orders on May 28. Flames had already damaged electrical infrastructure, cutting off power to the community and limiting communications. Their job was to co-ordinate the evacuations of about 2,500 people via an assortment of military planes and helicopters, Schenk said. 'Our folks were leading the landing-zone operations. They had deployed equipment that allowed them to communicate between the aircraft, as well as co-ordinate evacuees,' he said. 'Our team showed great leadership in working alongside the community.' The evacuation of Mathias Colomb has since been completed, the provincial government said in a release. On Tuesday, Chief Gordie Bear said about 50 essential workers, including firefighters, were still in the First Nation. In an update Wednesday, the province said the nearby fire measured 9,785 hectares and was still considered out of control. The mandatory evacuation order remains in effect. Earlier this week, First Nations leaders called on the federal and provincial governments to send more equipment and resources to their communities. PROVINCE OF MANITOBA The Manitoba Urban Search and Rescue team heads to Pukatawagan on May 30. Schenk said an emergency operations centre has been set up in Mathias Colomb, and a fire chief has taken the lead. Weekday Mornings A quick glance at the news for the upcoming day. '(The Office of the Fire Commissioner) will work alongside them to make sure that their needs are being met, resources and infrastructure are being brought in,' he said. 'The one thing I can't do is thank the communities enough for their support. We wouldn't be able to do this without them…. Their leadership contributes to the success, whether its the local-level knowledge or the access to certain limited resources.' Task force members have also been assisting wildfire responses elsewhere in the province. Some are on the ground supporting incident management in Flin Flon and in eastern Manitoba, Schenk said. Part of their role included establishing a 'tent city' near fire lines in Lac du Bonnet, providing accommodations that keep firefighters at the front, he said. Violent convicted felon charged with stalking in Evansville

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – A convicted violent felon is facing multiple charges, including stalking and firearm charges, after authorities say he used an Apple AirTag on a woman's vehicle to track her activities. According to an affidavit, a woman reported to Evansville Police on April 13 that she believed an unknown female had placed an Apple AirTag on her vehicle while she was at a restaurant over the weekend. Evansville Police say they were not able to find the device on her vehicle, but an extra patrol was requested around the woman's home. Suspect accused of stealing Chandler Police car during pursuit now in jail The next day, authorities say the woman reported a man came to her home claiming that his camera bag was stolen from him, and the bag contained an Apple AirTag that was shown on the woman's vehicle. However, the woman told authorities the man did not ask her if she knew about the camera bag, but instead reached underneath the car and removed a magnetic box before leaving the area in an SUV. Police say they were able to identify the man who was at the woman's home as Mark Alan Schenk, 50, of Evansville, by comparing surveillance footage with a database of open sources on the internet. While reviewing court documents, detectives say they learned a woman had submitted a petition for a protective order against Schenk, who she said had been stalking her and waiting outside of her employer on multiple occasions. After making contact with the woman who submitted the petition, authorities say she admitted to placing the magnetic box under another vehicle in order to prevent Schenk from tracking her. The woman also reportedly told authorities that she received a text from Schenk after she located the AirTag that said 'I bet you won't find any other ones.' Federal inmate sentenced to life for murdering cellmate in Terre Haute prison Evansville Police were able to execute a search warrant at Schenk's home, and he was brought into custody without incident. During the search, authorities say they found a revolver inside his bag, a GPS device, an Apple AirTag attached to strong magnets and narcotics, including methamphetamine and psilocybin mushrooms. Schenk was previously convicted for dealing a narcotic drug in 2006, qualifying him as a serious violent felon and prohibiting him from possessing a firearm. During questioning, police say Schenk admitted to placing the AirTag on the vehicle owned by the woman who had submitted a protective order against him. He also reportedly admitted to sending messages to her and waiting outside of her employer. However, Schenk denied knowing that the revolver was a real firearm. Schenk was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on Wednesday, and charged with stalking, two counts of unlawful surveillance, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of a schedule drug and possession of methamphetamine. He is being held without bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Luxury condominiums are part of Reston Station mixed-use development

Reston, Virginia, celebrated its 60th anniversary last year. As one of the nation's best-known post-World War II 'new towns,' it was designed as an antidote to suburban sprawl and aging cities. The Reston Station development, going up now at the city's Metro stop, could be called Reston 2.0. The 5-million-square-foot mixed-use project swept away low-rise office buildings from the 1960s and '70s and replaced them with glass-wrapped towers encircling central plazas. Reston Station bills itself as a transit-oriented development, made up of office buildings, apartments, condos and hotels, with destination restaurants, retail shops and outdoor space for concerts and other community activities. At its heart is the JW Marriott Residences Reston Station, a 28-story, hotel-condo building. The hotel will occupy the first 13 floors, while the upper floors will house 93 luxury condominiums, ranging from one-bedroom with a den, to three-bedroom, 3½-bathroom models. Although the building won't be completed until the fall, a third of the units have sold, said Matt Cummings, director of sales for McWilliams/Ballard, the sales and marketing company for the project. Units have 10-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious balconies — some wraparound — with expansive views that include Tysons, Dulles International Airport and Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland. 'We've had buyers look at the view and say, 'We'll take it,'' he said. Greg Schenk and his wife, Allison Rudoy, put a deposit on a three-bedroom, three-bath unit sight unseen. 'The big thing for me was work,' said Schenk, a urologist who lives in Arlington, Virginia, but often commutes — sometimes for emergencies in the middle of night — to hospitals as far as away as Loudoun County. He said the 25- to-35-minute commute has for years cut into his exercise time and he looks forward to taking advantage of the gym in the building and the larger Vida Fitness next door. 'I'd like to live the healthy lifestyle I talk to patients about,' he said. 'Lifestyle and convenience. That was the motivation.' As empty nesters, Schenk said he and his wife wanted to have a place their children could come home to and that they owned. They were also drawn to the proximity to the Metro and Dulles Airport and what he called the development's 'insane' amenities. 'They even have a plant concierge!' he said, referring to the plant-watering service that's available to residents. Kitchens have a dry bar, quartzite counters and backsplashes and Thermador and Bosch appliances. Bathrooms have large-format porcelain tiles and zero-entry showers. Floors are European white oak. All units have laundry rooms with full-size washers and dryers. The units are pre-wired for Smart Home electronics and have motorized window shades. 'It's the best building in the area,' Cummings said, 'when you think about the quality of construction, the amenities, the location and the layout.' He said the units were designed with ample closet space for downsizing couples who need the storage. Access to Dulles Airport — about a five-minute drive or four Metro stops away — is attractive to buyers too, said Cummings. The 25th floor houses the residents' fitness room, lounge, grilling and dining areas — which can be reserved for private parties — and a landscaped dog park. There is a 24-hour concierge and 24-hour valet parking. One-bedrooms come with one parking space in the underground garage and two- and three-bedroom units have two parking spaces with the option to buy a third. There will also be private garages built within the garage, charging stations and enclosed storage units for an additional cost. Condo owners will have a private entrance to the building and have access to hotel, its restaurants — even room service. Address: JW Marriott Reston Residences | 1820 Reston Row Plaza, Reston, VA 20190. Transit: The building is next door to the Wiehle-Reston East Station on Metro's Silver Line, connecting downtown with Dulles Airport. Reston Town Center is one stop to the west. Nearby shops and restaurants: A number of restaurants are either opening or are planned to open this year in the immediate vicinity, including several in the Marriott Residences building. Open now are two new American cuisine restaurants, Founding Farmers and Matchbox, along with the upscale Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse. Among the planned restaurants are Ebbitt House, of the Clyde's Restaurant Group, a Japanese restaurant and French bakery, along with a Fresh Market supermarket. Schools: Sunrise Valley Elementary, Hughes Middle, South Lakes High School. Parks and Recreation: The Reston Station design incorporates greenspaces and plazas for concerts and other events. The 45-mile Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park, linking Arlington with Purcellville, runs alongside the development. Residents can join the Reston Association and have access to 1,350 acres of outdoor space, including four lakes, 55 miles of biking and hiking and walking trails, swimming pools, boating, fishing, ballfields, tennis and pickleball.
