In response to a circular from the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) announcing that the World School Volleyball Championship (Under-15 Boys and Girls) will be held in Shangluo City, China, from December 4 to 13, 2025, the Andhra Pradesh unit of the SGFI has called for nominations of eligible and talented students for the national selection trials to be held at Balewadi, Pune, Maharashtra. In a statement on Friday, School Games Federation of Andhra Pradesh Secretary G. Bhanumurthy Raju said that zonal (erstwhile district) and State-level volleyball selection trials would be conducted to identify eight boys and eight girls from the State for the national trials. The boys' State selection trials will be held from August 25 to 27, and the girls' trials from August 28 to 30, 2025. Only students born on or after January 1, 2010 — with permissible birth years 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 — are eligible. Participants must carry their original birth certificate in English, issued by a government-approved authority, and have a passport valid for at least six months beyond December 2025. District-level trials will be conducted on August 13 under the supervision of the respective Zonal Educational Officer and District School Games Secretary. The State-level trials will take place on August 18, 2025, at K.B.C. Zilla Parishad Boys High School, Patamata, Vijayawada, in NTR district. Sports Excellence Awards Director of School Education V. Vijay Rama Raju has instructed all schools across the State to celebrate the birth anniversary of 'Wizard of Hockey' Dhyan Chand on August 29 in a grand manner. As part of the celebrations, the best five schools in each district — selected based on their sports achievements — will receive the School of Sports Excellence Awards for the academic year 2024-25. A five-member committee headed by the District Educational Officer will review applications. The last date for submitting applications is August 18. Scrutiny will be done on August 19, and the final list of awardees will be announced on August 21. Awards will be presented on National Sports Day, August 29, in each district.

With sub-24secs in 50m fly, Rohit makes a splash

Mumbai: Rohit Benediction had outlined three boxes to tick in a season where he dove fully into his primary career in the pool after splitting it with his back-up in engineering books. He wanted to become the first Indian to go under 24 seconds in the 50m butterfly, register the best Indian timing in the 100m butterfly, and qualify for the World Championships. Rohit Benediction in action. (HT) Over the last six weeks starting from the National Championships in late June to last week's Worlds, the 21-year-old checked all three. At the nationals in Bhubaneswar, Rohit clocked 52.57s in the 100m fly to erase Asian Games medallist Virdhawal Khade's long-standing best Indian mark (52.79) and take the gold beating the experienced Sajan Prakash. At last month's World University Games (WUG) in Germany, he clocked 23.96s in the 50m fly semi-finals to better his national record set in the heats and become the first Indian to go sub-24s in the event. Then, as a little reward, he found himself in the company of top swimmers at the Worlds in Singapore, where he signed off from the 100m fly heats. For someone only just about beginning to stroke his swimming path full-time, simply being at the Worlds was a dream. One that also presented him with a reality. 'It is true that we Indians are not anywhere near the podium at the world level,' Rohit said. 'But I want to take the first step, somewhere.' In his own ladder, that first step has come in the form of a sub-24s 50m fly timing. 'My only goal from the WUG was to get into the 23s. I wanted it so badly, and so did Nihar sir.' Nihar Ameen, the Dronacharya awardee swimming coach, labelled Rohit's talent as 'raw' but also 'massive' and 'exciting'. Rohit joined Ameen's Dolphin Aquatics in Bengaluru in 2021, even though it is only from this year that the coach has got the undivided focus of his trainee. 'Earlier he would be tied up with his college commitments and would come and train just for a month. This year I forced him to wind up his college stuff and focus just on training. And the result is already showing,' Ameen said. Rohit still has a backlog of exams to clear of his four-year civil engineering course. Born in Madurai with a birth defect of a broken thigh bone for which he took to swimming for physical strength, Rohit signed up for an engineering college the same year he enrolled into Ameen's academy. 'Back then I was not a good swimmer at all. I'd always be outside the top 3 in the nationals,' he said. 'So, I thought if not swimming, I should have a solid background in studies.' It wasn't the first time Rohit had doubts over his swimming journey. In 2019, grappling with a wave of poor results after trying out different styles – butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, individual medley – in age-group events, Rohit had almost given up on the sport. His mother convinced him to give it one last shot at the School Games Federation of India nationals. On the opening day, he came fifth in the 50m fly event. 'My mind was set that this will be my last competition.' Until, he came first in the next event (100m breaststroke). His mother couldn't stop crying. His swimming wouldn't stop. 'That changed my swimming life,' Rohit said. That, and winning gold in both 50m fly (24.39s) and 100m fly (53.89s) at the Uttarakhand National Games in January this year. 'After that, I started believing that I can do something. I knew I had to work a lot to achieve better things. And the first step in that was bettering both the national marks,' Rohit said. Six months later, he managed to cross that step. Much stiffer steps await, and Ameen believes there is potential – not just in fly but other events too. 'He has an amazing structure for swimming, and a wide repertoire,' he said. 'The Worlds experience would've been an eye opener for him of the world level.' The continental level will be up next, at the Asian Championships that Ahmedabad will host in October. 'I want to better my record there, and hopefully get a medal,' Rohit said.

FYJC admissions play spoilsport in holding school sports contests

PUNE: Delays and uncertainty in the Class 11 (first year junior college) admission process have caused significant disruptions in the scheduling and organisation of school-level sports competitions in Maharashtra to the extent that while tournaments for the under-14 and under-17 age groups are in their final planning stage, there is now a strong possibility that competitions for the under-19 category may be postponed, according to officials from the District Sports Office. Delays and uncertainty in FYJC admission process have caused significant disruptions in scheduling and organisation of school-level sports competitions in Maharashtra. ((PIC FOR REPRESENTATION)) Officials revealed that the ongoing Class 11 admissions – slated to continue till August 1 – have directly affected the planning of school sports events, particularly for the under-19 age group. As many students in the under-19 category fall in this academic bracket, their participation and registration in competitions has been delayed. Consequently, while online registrations for the under-14 and under-17 age groups have already begun and the district sports officer has set a deadline of July 25 for the same, an extension of the registration deadline is being considered for the under-19 age group. Jagannath Lakde, an official from the District Sports Office (Pune), said, 'Since the Class 11 admission process is underway, we are unable to complete the registration process for the under-19 age group. We are therefore planning to extend the registration period. Meanwhile, the registration deadline for schools and students in the under-14 and under-17 categories has been set as July 25. There are a total 49 sporting events in the school games, and each school and college should ensure that every student participates in at least one sport. This participation can also be beneficial for students later in terms of grace marks and overall development.' Ritika Jadhav, a Class 11 student and sprinter from a Pune-based junior college, said, 'I've been preparing for the under-19 athletics events for the past few months, but the delay in admissions has left everything uncertain. We don't even know when the trials or selections will take place. It is frustrating because these competitions are crucial not just for experience but also for grace marks and future sports scholarships. I hope that the authorities finalise the schedule soon so that we can focus on our performance and not be stuck in limbo.' The National School Games (NSG) are conducted every year by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) under the Sports Authority of India. Students have to qualify through competitions held at the taluka, district, divisional, and state levels across 49 different sports disciplines to represent Maharashtra at the national level. Typically, tournaments for the under-14, under-17, and under-19 categories begin in July every year. This year however, none of the competitions have commenced despite July drawing to a close. Meanwhile, officials have noted that many schools and colleges are not actively encouraging their students to participate in these competitions. Former athletes and sports professionals have called for a statewide campaign to be conducted at every school playground, making it mandatory for every student to engage in at least one sport to help foster a strong sporting culture and holistic development among the youth.
