Philadelphia families find relief from back-to-school shopping stress with help from school district

Kids across the Philadelphia area got a head start on going back to the classroom with the School District of Philadelphia's 5th Annual Back-to-School Celebration & Bus Tour on Monday. Backpacks, school essentials and socks were packed on the lawn of the School of the Future in West Philadelphia. Children and parents were able to stock up on their favorite supplies fresh for the new academic year. According to the National Retail Federation, the average family is expected to spend more than $500 on back-to-school supplies. For mother of four, Lanaysia Joiner, the help is more than appreciated. "It's a relief as far as like uniforms, bookbags – stuff that's really needed," Joiner said. "Some families can't afford it. I'm a single mom [of] four children, so, you know, very appreciative today." It's a similar sentiment from mom of three, Mimi Gravley. "It's a help, it's a help. I can focus on one less thing of bookbags because the bookbags don't last long, so it's nice to have that already," Gravley said. The megabus will make seven stops across the city of Philadelphia through Aug. 15.

I've picked 15 of my favorite deals so far and highlighted them below. Some of them carry my own seal of approval after using them through my collegiate years or even my elementary and middle school days. So, I can vouch that they're some all-time favorites and trusted essentials. Enday Double Deck Large Pencil Box Keep writing utensils, highlighters, sharpeners and the like organized in this budget-friendly pencil box. It has six compartments on each side for double the storage space and is suited for those headed to kindergarten or older. 4E's Novelty College Ruled Composition Notebook, 4-Pack Elementary school aged students are most likely going to need a couple of composition notebooks, so you should grab this $19 four-pack while you can. They'll have a few for a variety of subjects and one to leave in the classroom for journaling. Coordinate each color to a particular subject so students can hand in homework and other assignments with ease. It usually goes for over $40, but recently dipped to under $30 with this discount. Although we haven't entered into August just yet, it'll be here in just a few days. After that the summer seems to slip on by and all of a sudden its the fall. If you want to avoid buying supplies, gear and the like when it's crunch time, consider perusing Target's vast array of back-to-school deals before it's too late.
