Baton Rouge student left on bus found safe, driver dismissed
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The East Baton Rouge Parish School System confirmed that a Delmont Elementary student was left on a school bus on Monday, May 12. The school system said the child was found safe and returned to their family. 'The driver involved is no longer employed by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System,' officials said. The school board says state law requires all bus drivers to check their buses after each route. This ensures that no students are left behind. District leadership and the Office of Human Resources addressed this incident. 'As a precaution, all drivers are being reminded of this critical safety protocol. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and we are taking steps to prevent this from happening again,' EBRPSS said. Accused Georgia school shooter moving toward possible plea deal, attorney says
A defense attorney for Colt Gray, the teen accused of killing four people at a Georgia high school last fall, said Tuesday he may change his not-guilty plea. 'We are here for the possible scheduling to the plea. I would likely ask the court for some time, maybe in October,' defense attorney Alfonso Kraft Jr. told the judge. Tuesday's status hearing was called to discuss whether attorneys were planning to go to trial or considering a plea deal. 'We are still doing some investigatory work on our behalf and then we have a psychologist who is going to be visiting with Colt in the middle of this month,' Kraft said. Authorities say Colt has admitted to the September 4 shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, that left two teachers and two students dead. Nine others were injured. Colt has been indicted on 55 felony counts, including four counts of malice murder, according to court documents, and has pleaded not guilty. He would be tried as an adult. Colt joined Tuesday's hearing virtually, wearing a black T-shirt and glasses. His dark hair was cut short. At his first appearance, Colt had long blond hair. Killed in the attack were Apalachee High School teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53; and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. - Barrow County School System Several family members of victims attended the hearing, including the family of 14-year-old Christian Angulo, who was in his first year of high school. Some in court wore black hoodies with Christian's picture printed on them. Because Colt was 14 at the time of the shooting, he is not eligible for the death penalty and could face up to life in prison if convicted. His father, Colin Gray, 54, has been indicted on 29 felonies including two counts of second-degree murder, four counts of involuntary manslaughter and eight counts of cruelty to children. He has also pleaded not guilty. Investigators previously testified in court that Colin Gray bought the AR-15-style rifle allegedly used in the shooting for his son as a Christmas present, only seven months after law enforcement questioned the family about online threats 'to commit a school shooting.' Chief Judge Nicholas Primm signaled the suggested timing for a possible plea deal involving Colt 'works well because Colin Gray's trial is scheduled in September and (it could) avoid any publicity tainting that trial.' Wing Wars of Acadiana returns to downtown Lafayette, raising funds for homeless youth
Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival volunteers, cooks and members of the community of Lafayette came together Saturday with the goal of support. The event at Parc International in downtown aimed to benefit the Gifting Grace Project, which helps homeless children by providing them with essential resources. David Owens, the founder and chairman of the organization, started the cookoff in 2021. It initially became the organization's premier fundraiser for the Gifting Grace Project. It also serves as a community awareness event. The Gifting Grace Project began in the fall of 2020 and aimed to give back to the Acadiana community. What started as a holiday outreach, according to their website, quickly grew when they learned that nearly 600 students in the Lafayette Parish School System were experiencing homelessness. During the cookoff, Wing Wars of Acadiana welcomed all cooks, both professional and amateur, who came together to cook a whole lot of wings. A total of 12 participated in this year's Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival, two more than last year, according to Owens' sister Sarah Arnold, who helps with the Gifting Grace Project. 'We team up with our group of volunteers and committee members to make this happen,' Arnold said. 'We sponsor, on average, around 2000 kids a year, and you have to have money for that, and so as a nonprofit, we rely on fundraising and donations, and this is our only fundraiser event every year.' Arnold said they raised about $30,000 last year, and they are hoping to meet that number this year and then some. The 12 teams that competed were: ATF Bistro Bayou Bao Co. Live music from three Swamp Land Revival, Sharona Thomas Band, and Coteau Grove played throughout the day, as well as fun jumps, balloon animals, and various local booths. Lines of people filled all 12 booths, ready to eat various flavors of chicken wings. As the boxes filled up with tickets for their favorite flavor, and cheers and laughter grew louder from the teams competing, Keith Domingue with MaD All-Purpose Cajun Seasoning, said they, like everyone else there, were there to support the Gifting Grace Project. 'We enjoy being a part of this event because we are raising money for the kids of Acadiana,' Domingue said. 'We feel very fortunate to do what we do, and we can give back to the community.' This is the third year in a row that Domingue and MaD All Purpose Cajun have competed in Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival. This year they cooked up traditional wings with their barbecue rub, and original to help raise money. For a pair of newcomers, Summer Wilkinson and Keith Bearb, this was their first Wing Wars of Acadiana: Acadiana's Chicken Wing Festival. Wilkinson said she has enjoyed her first time here, after being downtown and was told that they should give the event a try. 'I definitely plan on coming back next year,' Wilkinson said. Bearb, who tried pretty much every wing before noon, said that he was impressed with the event and turnout, especially how well-organized the event was. As far as his favorite so far, Bearb said the wings from Bayou Bao Co. Their Korean Fired Chicken Wings became one that he remembered most of all. 'It has a really good crust, sauce, sesame seeds, it was crispy, and it was one of the best flavors,' Bearb said. 'They're volunteering their time, their money, and they want to do it in this area, in the heart of the city," Arnold said. 'Every year when we do this, we always ask if they can come out and do this, and every time they tell us yes.' City of St. George begins process to create independent school district
ST. GEORGE, La. (Louisiana First) — St. George is moving forward with its plans to establish an independent school district, city and state leaders announced Thursday. The proposed legislation, set to be introduced in the upcoming legislative session, marks a significant step toward fulfilling one of the city's core promises. 'Today's the first step in the process of doing the first thing we ever promised. When we create that initiative to create a city, and that's to create a school system,' said St. George Interim Mayor Dustin Yates. Yates stressed that creating a school district has been a key goal since St. George became a city. 'The thing that excites me the most is that for the first time in a long time, we're going to put our kids first. We're going to put our priorities where they need to be,' he said. State Sen. Rick Edmonds confirmed that plans for the St. George School District are already in motion. He said that discussions have taken place with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, and a bill will be introduced during the legislative session in April. The proposal includes a funding measure that will be presented as a constitutional amendment. According to Edmonds, the amendment could appear on the ballot as early as this November. 'That means a statewide people will have to approve this and East Baton Rouge Parish as well. So both of those instruments will be introduced in the next few weeks,' he said. The bill will set the boundaries for the new school district. It will also create a school board and a superintendent. Plus, it will tackle important issues around charter and magnet schools. 'In the bill will state that if you are already a part of a magnet school in East Baton Rouge Parish and you'd like your child to continue in that in that magnet school, there will be a already a cooperative diver agreement between Saint George Community School System and East Baton Rouge Parish that that parent doesn't have to worry about that and the same will go for charters,' Edmonds said. Trump signs executive order to dismantle Department of Education If voters say yes to the proposal in November, the governor will then appoint interim leaders for the new school system. These leaders will oversee the transition and determine a timeline for full implementation. 'They would begin the groundwork of trying to implement with all these things that have to go involved. These are legacy costs, retirement cost, buildings, transportation plans, and we'd have to coordinate that with East Baton Rouge Parish and that board would decide whether they were ready or they had to wait another year,' Edmonds said. 'They would make that ultimate decision, along with making the decision of getting on the ballot so that we would have a permanent board or and or election for those things.'
