Perth Scorchers sign West Australian quick Bryce Jackson on one-year deal for Big Bash League
West Australian breakout quick Bryce Jackson will be given the chance to press for a Perth Scorchers debut, handed a one-year contract extension after the departure of Jason Behrendorff. It means Jackson — who starred for WA in one-day cricket last summer — will be in the queue of quicks vying for a spot after Behrendorff left to take up a three-year deal with Melbourne Renegades. The Scorchers are expected to bolster their pace stocks at this month's Big Bash League draft. Jackson spent most of last season on the Scorchers' list. He signed on the eve of the season as a local replacement player for Mitch Marsh, which meant he fell out of the squad when the star all-rounder returned late in the campaign. He has already shown some loyalty to the Scorchers. The 25-year-old knocked back an offer from Brisbane Heat to stay in Perth last season. In just four one-day cup matches for WA, he took 12 wickets at 15.58, to finish second in that competition's player-of-the-year voting. The Albany product is in Queensland training with Australia A ahead of a series against Sri Lanka A in the Northern Territory. 'It's exciting to be back with the Scorchers and signing a full contract this year is another step in the right direction,' Jackson said. 'I got a nice taste of things from being the local replacement last season by training with the group, working my own craft and learning plenty about the tactical side of things.' Jackson said his first year on the list taught him how the best players in the State prepare for matches. 'The preparation, in particular, was a huge takeaway,' he said. 'It's different to domestic cricket with all the travel and tight turnarounds, so I'll benefit a lot from learning those routines and prioritising certain aspects of my preparation. 'Hearing the noise at ground level on game day was another thing, and The Furnace is unbelievable. 'It is so, so loud and incredibly exciting to be out there when someone takes a hanger or bowls someone.' The Scorchers have three spots remaining for local players. Nick Hobson, Matthew Spoors, Sam Fanning and veteran Andrew Tye are all without a deal for next season.

Major League Cricket: West Australian Cooper Connolly backed to star in American Twenty20 tournament
Major League Cricket will be like no tournament Cooper Connolly has ever played in. For starters, his team is called the San Francisco Unicorns, who refer to their supporters as the Sparkle Army. Games are played in two hubs, one in the converted Oakland Coliseum — made most famous by Brad Pitt's hit baseball film Moneyball — and the other in Dallas. Watch every game of Major League Cricket live and free on 7plus The league is followed largely by south Asian expats living in the United States, but word is growing among locals. It includes Indian-owned franchises and is the stars-and-stripes answer to the flurry of Twenty20 tournaments across the globe. This season, the teams are stacked with the best short-form talent in the world. That includes Western Australia and Perth Scorchers gun Connolly, playing his first franchise tournament outside of the Big Bash League, months after he took that competition by storm. Unicorns coach Shane Watson has tipped Connolly to take the MLC by the horn. 'Cooper Connolly, Australian, he has got some serious power,' he said. 'Middle-order batter, left-hander, he has got some real power and bowls some really nice left-arm orthodox as well. He's got great energy in the field.' The Unicorns begin their campaign on Thursday morning (WA time) against Jason Behrendorff's Washington Freedom in Oakland. Connolly is in the side with some familiar faces. Scorchers teammate and New Zealand international Finn Allen — who Connolly developed a close relationship with during the summer — is in the side, as is fellow Aussie young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk and white-ball teammate Matt Short and Xavier Bartlett. West Australian teammate Brody Couch plays for the Unicorns as a local player, because his mother grew up in upstate New York. 'Cooper coming into the group for — I think — it's his first franchise tournament outside of the Big Bash, so I'm excited to see how he goes,' Allen said. Pat Cummins is also on a multi-year deal with the Unicorns, but will be unavailable for the tournament because of international commitments. Scorchers teammate Mitch Marsh will play for the Texas Super Kings, while Marcus Stoinis and David Warner are also involved in the tournament. Steve Smith will jet in for two matches with the Freedom squeezed between the World Test Championship final and Australia's three-match Test tour of the West Indies Connolly is not likely to be involved in that series, which starts later this month and overlaps with the MLC. His selection in Australia's Twenty20 team for matches in the Caribbean from July 21 is not likely to affect his MLC availability, with the final scheduled for July 14 in Dallas.

What a Scorcher! Mitch Marsh blasts another IPL fifty
Mitch Marsh has blasted a match-winning IPL half-century for Lucknow Super Giants on the day he committed his future back home to the Perth Scorchers. Australia's T20 skipper celebrated re-signing with the Scorchers for three more years by reminding his Big Bash outfit just why he's worth every dollar as he grabbed the player of the match award in Lucknow's 12-run win over Mumbai Indians on Friday. Marsh ignited Lucknow's assault in front of their home fans after they'd been put in to bat, clouting his third half-century in four matches -- his sixth IPL fifty in all. 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙝-𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 🔥A powerful half-century from Mitchell Marsh puts #LSG on 🔝 in the powerplay 💪They are 69/0 after 6 ▶️ | #LSGvMI | @LucknowIPL — IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) April 4, 2025 The 33-year-old powerhouse dominated an opening partnership with Aiden Markram, reaching his 50 off 27 balls while the South African, starved of the strike amid the Aussie's one-man pyrotechnics, was on just seven at the other end. Markram watched on in admiration as Marsh raced to his fifty by taking 22 off the final over of the power play bowled by the unfortunate Ashwani Kumar. Having hit two sixes and nine fours in his 31-ball knock of 60, Marsh was clearly annoyed with himself when he got a little tangled up against the wrist spin of left-armer Vignesh Puthur and chipped one straight back to the bowler just when he'd looked in the mood for a hundred. But Markram then took up the cudgels to make 53 and, helped by brisk knocks of 30 from Ayush Badoni and 27 from David Miller, who went past 3000 IPL runs in the process, the Justin Langer-coached outfit reached 8-203 off their 20 overs. In reply, Mumbai had looked on course for victory when the inimitable Suryakumar Yadav made 67 off 43 balls in his 100th IPL game but Avesh Khan induced him to mistime a ramp which changed the whole complexion of ther game. Captain Hardik Pandya (28no off 16), who'd earlier excelled with 5-36 when Lucknow batted, looked set for one of his special finishes, but a target of 22 off the final over proved beyond even him as as the outstanding Avesh gave up just nine, leaving Mumbai short on 5-191. The big Bison 💪Huge news from the five-time BBL champions as Mitch Marsh re-signs with the Perth Scorchers until the end of #BBL17. — KFC Big Bash League (@BBL) April 4, 2025 It all capped a terrific day for Marsh, who had declared earlier that he wanted to end his career as a one-club player in the BBL after committing long-term to the Scorchers again. He'd been out of contract at the end of last season and wasn't among the Scorchers' 10 pre-signed players before the player movement window, which prompted speculation over whether he could move. "I'm really proud to sign on with the Scorchers, a team that I've played with since I was a kid, and a franchise that has looked after me incredibly well," Marsh said. "Being a one-club player was a big part of my decision, which was obviously quite an easy decision. "With the landscape of cricket these days, a lot of us play for a lot of different teams around the world and the idea of always coming home and playing for the Scorchers and hopefully finishing my career as a one-club player will be something I'm really proud of in years to come."
