What Hungry Cat Does in the Kitchen Shocks Internet: 'They're Evolving'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A rescue cat named Klaus has gone viral after pulling off an unexpected kitchen trick that has left internet users both amused and slightly concerned. The viral TikTok video shared on Friday by his owner, under the username @caits182, shows the black and white cat perched on the kitchen counter, energetically pawing at the microwave door, until he finally manages to open it. "Ever seen a cat open a microwave?" the caption says, as the poster rushes to remove the cat from the appliance. In a post shared later in the week, the poster explains that Klaus, who has a history of documented shenanigans on social media with his lookalike sibling, Wesley, is a 1.5-year-old who was rescued at 5 months and is a "a softie who loves cuddles." Cats are indeed smart creatures, but unlike humans their intelligence isn't measured by an IQ but rather by their cognitive abilities and the way they interact. Studies have found that cats have a sense of object permanence, and are able to recognize when an object is hidden from their sight. They have working memory and a well-developed long-term memory, which helps them achieve their goals. They can also distinguish between different time intervals and can recognize different quantities. They also look for human cues and gestures, to respond to human moods, and are able to recognize specific human voices and become attached to people in their lives. Compared to dogs, a cat's intelligence manifests differently. Dogs often seek human guidance while cats prioritize independence. Signs of a smart cat can vary, but they usually include problem-solving, demonstrating persistence, or immediately sensing when you're having a bad day and cheering you up. The smartest cat breeds include Abyssinian, Siamese, Scottish Fold, Persians, Cornish Rex, and Turkish Angora. A stock image shows a tuxedo cat hanging out on his owner's kitchen counter. One user, LoveSyrinaIRL, commented: "As a cat expert, this can be very dangerous for him, as he might start cooking his own food and become a chef and open his own 5-star restaurant." Ednc said: "God forbid a cat shows he's capable of reheating his own food." Laura added: "They're evolving. The end is in sight for us." Newsweek reached out to @caits182 for comment via TikTok comments. We could not verify the details of the case. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? Celeb Pawrents: Host Khairudin Saharom likes to be around his five cats, both at home and at work

PHOTO: COURTESY OF KHAIRUDIN SHAHAROM Celeb Pawrents: Host Khairudin Saharom likes to be around his five cats, both at home and at work SINGAPORE – Potential new hires of Khairudin Saharom's Kite Studio Architecture need to meet one important prerequisite: They must be comfortable with cats. 'Sorry to those who are allergic, but my cats come first,' says Khairudin with a laugh. The 49-year-old Singaporean architect and popular TV and radio personality has five adopted cats. BamBam, seven, Toby, five, and BuBu, three, live in the office, while the other two – Charlie, eight, and PingPong, four – live with Khairudin in his apartment. This way, he can have his cats around him at home and at work. Charlie, a Scottish Fold mix, is the only female in the litter. His other fur kids are male domestic shorthairs. Once or twice a month, he takes Charlie and PingPong to visit the others in the office. The cats get along well and have their own corner for food. Khairudin works on weekends, and if he is not able to be in the office, he gets pet sitters to look after the office cats. Khairudin, who owns Kite Studio, says his four staff members are not just tolerant of the cats. They treat his cats as part of the workplace family and are actively involved in their care, taking turns cleaning litter boxes and getting them treats. 'Having pets can improve office productivity,' he says. 'Our work demands a lot from us, with looming deadlines all the time. The cats help manage stress levels and calm nerves.' Besides having a full-time job as an architect, Khairudin is also a veteran host on Mediacorp Suria channel and radio station Ria 897FM. He earned two nominations – Best Host (Entertainment) and Best Host (Info-Ed) – at the recent Pesta Perhana 2025. Mediacorp's biennial awards show is Singapore's largest celebration of the best in local Malay entertainment. Khairudin says his cats not only provide companionship, but they also help manage his stress levels and are essentially his emotional support system, helping him juggle his multiple responsibilities. 'You go to them after a lousy day at the office, and even if you have to go on the radio after work, playing with them makes all your crappiness fade away,' he says. PHOTO: COURTESY OF KHAIRUDIN SHAHAROM When he is stressed or angry, the cats' presence helps calm his nerves. 'When they come to you and want to play, how can you stay angry?' adds Khairudin, who is also a design tutor at the National University of Singapore. He has always been a cat lover. Growing up, his family had birds, fish and terrapins. However, his mother strictly prohibited cats in the house. 'Somehow, cats just seem to follow me,' says Khairudin. 'I found a way to attract my neighbour's cats. I would jiggle my keys and even the shyest of the three cats would come out to me. It was quite peculiar.' Each of his cats has a distinct personality, and the bachelor says he does not have a favourite. Singaporean personality Khairudin Shaharom's five cats, (from left) Toby, Bubu, BamBam, PingPong and Charlie. PHOTO: COURTESY OF KHAIRUDIN SHAHAROM Charlie, who sleeps with Khairudin, is the matriarch – aloof with others but incredibly affectionate with her owner. 'She's the princess of the lot,' he says. 'When she doesn't want to be touched, she'll manoeuvre her body so skilfully that your hand can't reach her.' Yet, when she chooses to be affectionate, she will climb onto his chest and demand attention. 'Toby loves to cuddle and will climb onto my workstation and rest his face on my hand while I'm working,' says Khairudin. PingPong is the friendliest and follows Khairudin everywhere. The sociable feline even plays fetch. 'I was throwing a plastic bag into the dustbin, but I missed. PingPong ran for it and brought the bag back to me,' he says. 'Now it has become a game.' Khairudin describes BamBam as a typical unpredictable tabby. 'Sometimes he's super manja (affectionate), other days he's completely independent,' he says. Seven-year-old tabby cat BamBam lives in Kite Studio Architecture, Khairudin Saharom's workplace. PHOTO: COURTESY OF KHAIRUDIN SHAHAROM BuBu, the shyest and fattest of the bunch, is a master of hiding and loves food above all else. 'He once hid behind the microwave for hours,' Khairudin says. 'We found him only by shaking the kibble bottle.' Three-year-old male domestic shorthair BuBu is the shyest and fattest in his fur family. PHOTO: COURTESY OF KHAIRUDIN SHAHAROM His fur family is relatively low-maintenance. Khairudin spends approximately $400 monthly on their care, providing a balanced diet of wet food, kibbles and occasional treats. He learnt to groom them himself to avoid expensive professional grooming costs, which he says could range from around $200 a session a cat. Bathing them remains his biggest challenge. 'It's a nightmare,' he says. 'Their meows are so loud, neighbours might think I'm torturing them.' He adds: 'My cats are wonderful. After a crappy day at the office, you can talk to them. They don't complain, they listen.' Joanne Soh is a lifestyle correspondent at The Straits Times, with a special interest in entertainment and pop culture. Molly-Mae Hague tormented as her house is 'destroyed' by loved ones

Molly-Mae Hague, 25, said her Scottish Fold cats Eggy and Bread have been peeing and pooping in her home every day which means she constantly has to clean up after them Molly-Mae Hague has shared her frustration while saying that her cats are "destroying" her home by peeing and pooping on the carpet. The 25-year-old addressed the issue in her latest YouTube vlog as she showed a chipped nail, which she said was a result of her scrubbing cat wee. Molly-Mae said she felt "annoyed" at her pets, named Eggy and Bread, and added that the issue doesn't seem to be improving despite having five appointments with a cat therapist, seeing the vets and giving them medication. ‌ She explained that the Scottish Fold cats usually pee in the corners or at the edge of the carpet, but this time they did it in the middle of her bedroom which left her frustrated. Molly-Mae said: "Excuse the nails. I was scrubbing cat wee off the floor yesterday because as you know around here we love to keep it glamorous. ‌ "And as I was scrubbing the cat wee, already thinking in my head how annoyed I was at Eggy and Bread, my nail then snapped off in the process of scrubbing." She continued: "Normally when they do do their wees, which is pretty much every single day in this house, they do it in the perimeter of the carpet." But after the cats peed in the middle of her cream carpet in her bedroom, Molly-Mae said: "Just know that nothing's ever going to change." She explained she had five appointments with the cat therapist, took her pets to the vets, and the animals have been on medication but this hasn't helped and the issue is ongoing. She continued: "It's not even spraying. It's like actual full-on wees in the house every single day - and poos as well. What are you meant to do when you have a pet and you love them? You just have to let them destroy your house bit by bit." In her vlog, Molly-Mae also revealed that she ended up in hospital recently after experiencing "excruciating pain" following her trip to Dubai with Tommy Fury and their daughter Bambi. The mum-of-one said that shortly after returning to the UK from the United Arab Emirates, she ended up in A&E. ‌ She shared in her latest vlog on YouTube, released earlier today, that she thought she had a blood clot after not moving around much on the flight home and in the hours afterwards. Molly-Mae said she was in pain and had a swollen leg, among other symptoms, which prompted her to seek help. In the newly-uploaded vlog, she said: "Basically, I had my first A&E experience last night, guys. It was so so weird." She suggested that she had "never" been to A&E before and that her recent visit proved to be "the weirdest experience". Molly-Mae said: "Yesterday, I thought I had a blood clot and half of today I thought I had a blood clot in my leg. Obviously flying home from Dubai I was on the plane for like nearly 8 hours and I didn't move as much as I probably should have on the plane. Obviously they say on long flights you need to keep your legs moving, keep walking around. [...] I didn't drink like hardly any water." After a number of medical checks, the reality TV star said doctors told her she is "completely fine" and there was "nothing that showed them any sort of concern or anything about a blood clot." She added: "I feel fine now."
