Hearts complete three-year deal for former Ireland U21 international

Hearts have sealed a deal for former Ireland underage international Oisin McEntee. McEntee, who can play in defence or midfield, will make the switch to the Scottish Premier League once his contract with League 2 Walsall expires this summer. The 24-year-old has signed a three-year contract and becomes the Jambos' fourth summer signing after Christian Borchgrevink, Alexandros Kyziridis and Elton Kabangu. McEntee joined Newcastle United's academy as a youngster and went on to captain their U18 and U23 teams. He had a loan spell in Scotland with Greenock Morton before joining Walsall in a permanent two-year deal in 2022. McEntee made 79 appearances for the Saddlers and has also been capped for Ireland from U17 level up to U21s. Hearts boss Derek McInnes said: 'It's great that we've been able to get this deal done and we can now welcome Oisin to the club. 'It became clear in our conversations that Oisin is hungry, he wants to learn and improve, and he wants to be part of what we're trying to do here at Hearts. 'He's a ball player whilst being physically imposing, and an extremely versatile player. He's played in defence and midfield, so to have options around his positioning is a big plus.' McInnes added: 'Oisin's gained a lot of experience down south and he has knowledge of Scottish football too, which is a bonus. I'm sure he'll fit in well with the squad that we're building.' Group led by San Francisco 49ers ownership buys majority stake of Glasgow's Rangers

Scottish soccer club Rangers confirmed on Friday a U.S.-based consortium that includes an investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers has purchased a majority ownership stake. Rangers said health insurance entrepreneur Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises led the consortium of investors that was reported to have bought a 51% stake. The purchase price was not disclosed. The club said the group has committed to invest 20 million pounds ($27 million) right away, subject to shareholder approval in June. In July 2023, 49ers Enterprises – the ownership group run by the York family, the principal owners of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers – completed the takeover of Leeds, which will play in the Premier League next season after winning the second-tier title. 49ers Enterprises initially joined Leeds as a shareholder in 2018, and effectively purchased the majority stake at a significant discount after their relegation, per the Athletic. In Glasgow, takeover talks had been ongoing for months as Rangers finished a distant second to fierce rival Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season. Celtic has won the league title for four straight years. Cavenagh, co-founder of Philadelphia-based Pareto Health, will serve as Rangers board chairman. "This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches," he said in Friday's announcement. "Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs — at the top." Paraag Marathe, who will be the board's vice chairman, is the president of 49ers Enterprises – the sports investment entity is also led by San Francisco 49ers chief executive Jed York, son of John and Denise York. Marathe is also chairman of Leeds. He has been in the position since 2011. The Associated Press contributed to this report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? US-based group completes Rangers takeover

A United States-based group completed their takeover of Scottish Premiership club Rangers on Friday and immediately pledged to make a £20 million ($26 million) investment in new signings. The consortium of investors, led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, purchased a majority 51 percent stake in the Glasgow team. Advertisement Funding for the close-season signings will come in the form of a new share issue, subject to shareholder approval at a general meeting on June 23. Healthcare executive Cavenagh is Rangers' new chairman, while Paraag Marathe, who is chairman of Premier League side Leeds United and the president of 49ers Enterprises, becomes the vice-chairman. Rangers said the Scottish Football Association approved the deal late on Thursday night after the club sought consent over dual ownership issues. Sports investment firm 49ers Enterprises also owns a majority stake in Leeds, who won promotion from the Championship this season. Advertisement The deal will allow Rangers to step up their recruitment of a new manager. Real Madrid's departing assistant manager Davide Ancelotti and former Southampton boss Russell Martin are among the leading contenders for the job following the departure of interim boss Barry Ferguson. "We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the Rangers board, shareholders, staff, and supporters," Cavenagh said. "This club's history and traditions speak for themselves, but history doesn't win matches. "We know that the true way to honour the club's heritage will be to drive performance. Advertisement "Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs - at the top." Rangers finished second in the Scottish Premier League this season, trailing 17 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic, and failed to win a trophy. Rangers haven't won the Scottish title since 2021, with Celtic lifting the trophy 13 times in the last 14 seasons. Ending Celtic's dominance will be the top priority for Rangers' new owners. Marathe added: "At 49ers Enterprises, we have built a track record of sporting and business success, but our driving motivation is our deep connection to the clubs and communities we serve." smg/bsp

Rangers' nine-in-a-row championship trophy up for auction in Glasgow

The silverware won by Rangers to seal their nine-in-a-row triumph in 1997 is being auctioned next month. Auctioneers McTear's is listing the Bell's Whisky trophy as part of its 'Sporting History, Important Trophies, Medals and Jerseys' auction, scheduled to take place on June 19. McTear's expect the item to sell for between £9,000 and £12,000. Rangers lifted the trophy at Tannadice on May 7, 1997, after a Brian Laudrup header sealed a 1-0 victory over Dundee United. That result ensured Walter Smith's side secured a ninth Scottish Premier League title in a row, equalling the feat achieved by Celtic from 1965 to 1974. The trophy was presented to Rangers captain Richard Gough on the pitch after the match. McTear's says the item will come with its original box and paperwork from the Scottish Football Museum, confirming the trophy's authenticity. Looking at the upcoming sporting auctions at Mctears and came across Bell's Premier Division trophy presented to Rangers when they won 9-in-a-row in the 90s Believed to have been removed from Ibrox during the Craig Whyte era. Now on an auction site 🤦‍♂️ — Scotland's Coefficient (@scotlandscoeff1) May 27, 2025 A spokesperson for McTear's said: 'This is a remarkable piece of Rangers and Scottish football memorabilia that marks one of the most impressive achievements in the Club's history. 'We have auctioned a number of important Old Firm items over the years, and the nine-in-a-row trophy sits alongside the very best and highest profile pieces that have gone under the hammer. 'We have already received a number of enquiries and we expect interest from collectors and fans alike to continue to build as we approach the auction on June 19.' Rangers have been contacted for comment. Get all the latest news from around the country Follow STV News Scan the QR code on your mobile device for all the latest news from around the country
