Evan Ferguson completes loan switch to Roma

Republic of Ireland striker Evan Ferguson has completed his loan move to Serie A giants Roma from Brighton & Hove Albion. The 20-year-old Meath man will wear the number 11 shirt for the Italians, who have also an option to buy. Ferguson had scored four goals in 18 senior appearances for his country since his debut in 2022. The former Bohemians forward's club career had stalled at the Seagulls after a series of injuries, with a short spell at West Ham in the second half of last season falling disappointingly flat. Seagulls head coach Fabian Hurzeler said: "Evan had a challenging period across the past season and a half, and it has been one disrupted by niggling injury issues, which hasn't allowed him a run of games. "He is over those injuries and has come back in great shape. Now he really wants to play regularly. This is an exciting opportunity in a strong league and with the prospect of European football." Welcome to Roma, Evan! 🇮🇪 💛❤ #ASRoma — AS Roma English (@ASRomaEN) July 23, 2025 Ferguson will become the first Irish player to represent the three-time Italian champions at senior level. Irish Under 21 international Kevin Zefi is expected to leave the club this summer, having played for Roma's U20 side. Roma finished fifth in the league last season under Claudio Ranieri, who was subsequently replaced by former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini on a three-year contract. Around one hundred fans showed up at Rome's Ciampino Airport to welcome Ferguson when he arrived in the city on Sunday.

A round-up of football pre-season friendlies action

Calum McIntyre's side are all set for their fourth pre-season contest, which is a match-up versus Cymru Premier League Colwyn Bay. The Seagulls are managed by former Blues' favourite Michael Wilde and they are preparing for their return to the top flight after winning the Cymru North title last season. Chester, who lost out 3-0 to League Two Salford City in their last run-out, have announced the signing of goalkeeper Lewys Benjamin on a season-long loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He follows in the footsteps of former loanees Harry Tyrer, Elyh Harrison and Jimmy Storer as young keepers who looked to develop at the Blues. Benjamin told the club's website: 'The lads were great with me, they all introduced themselves to me straight away so I didn't need to go to them. 'Immediately I felt welcomed in by everyone, and the standard of the boys is absolutely class so it's been a great start.' Connah's Quay Nomads continue their preparations for the forthcoming campaign with tonight's friendly at National League North Macclesfield. Likely to feature is striker Eddie Servuts, who has signed up with John Disney's side. Servuts has featured as a trialist for Nomads during pre-season and he claimed a second half hat-trick in the win over Denbigh Town. The former Southport, Skelmersdale and Nantwich attacker told the club's website: 'I'm thrilled to sign for Connah's Quay - I can't wait to get started, give my all, and have a positive impact on the pitch.' Boss Disney added: 'Eddie has been fantastic since impressing in the trial game he applied for back in June - he is an exciting forward player that is willing to make runs, stretch teams and show his physical attributes as well as getting himself in the box and so far in pre-season scoring goals. 'We hope he can continue this into the season in the league campaign. We are all really looking forward to working with Eddie.' Round two contests in this season's Welsh League Cup have now been finalised. Gresford Athletic, who defeated Brickfield Rangers 3-0 in the first round, will travel to Llandudno, while Buckley Town - who thrashed Holyhead Hotspur 4-0 - host Newtown. Ruthin Town, who pipped Penrhyncoch on penalties, will now welcome Connah's Quay Nomads. Other northern section ties: Caernarfon v Colwyn Bay; Guilsfield v Bala; Flint v Holywell; The New Saints v Airbus; Rhyl 1879 v Denbigh.

Evan Ferguson given hero's reception in Rome ahead of loan move to Italian giants

The Ireland striker is in Italy to complete the formalities of his summer transfer, with Brighton and Roma having agreed terms for the season-loan move following negotiations over the past two weeks, which includes an option to buy Ferguson for €40m. He received a huge welcome arriving at Ciampino airport as Roma fans flocked to catch a glimpse of their new man, with many signing 'Ole, Ole, Ole, Evan, Evan' as he signed autographs and posed for photos. The 20-year-old wasn't able to break into Fabian Hurzeler's Brighton team after returning from ankle surgery at the start of last season. The Meath native started just twice for the Seagulls last term, scoring once, before departing for a half-season loan spell with West Ham in February, where he linked up with former boss Graham Potter. But the move to London proved deeply frustrating for the forward as he started just once for the Hammers, and played just 14 minutes of football off the bench across the final eight games of last season. Now, Ferguson has opted for a fresh start in Italy where he'll look to get back to playing regular football and rediscover his form, particularly with Ireland's World Cup qualifiers kicking off in less than seven weeks' time. Speaking from their pre-season camp in Spain this weekend, Hurzeler opened up on Ferguson's loan move to Italy and insists the door remains open for him at the Seagulls. 'For us, it is always important that the individual player has an environment where they can develop,' said the Brighton boss. "We decided the loan was the best option (but) Evan is still a player of us. He still brings us quality with him. He is a target player and I am sure when he gets more game-time he will one day be back and be an important player for us.' Three-time league winners Roma finished fifth in last season's Serie A campaign under Claudio Ranieri, while ex-Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini took the reins last month on a three-year contract. The club's next pre-season outing is against FC Kaiserslautern in Germany on Saturday July 26, while Ferguson is set to return to England next month as Roma face Aston Villa and Everton in friendlies. Roma's new league season gets underway at home to Bologna on August 23.

'I want to have a more positive season'

James Milner says he is "feeling good" after a "long journey" back to underwent routine knee surgery after a knock in training in August 2024 but complications with the operation led to a long period of 39-year-old returned after nine months out in the final game of last season."I'm not 100% yet. We haven't had too much of pre-season but I've been training hard," Milner told the Seagulls' media team from the club's training camp in Spain."Nine months is a long time out so that takes time but I've been working hard over the summer and come back in the best possible shape I can."After all the things that happened in the last year or so, I'm feeling good to be fair."The early part of the rehab was to just get the knee moving again so I could do my knee rehab. We tried everything in the gym and hyperbaric chambers, hot coals, all different types of therapies. "Sean Duggan the physio was incredible. It's not a common injury. At that time it was a difficult ask to come back and play but through the physio department and Sean's hard work - it was a long journey and a difficult one but the challenge of coming back from it at my age was what drove me on."Get news notifications on your clubMilner is now preparing for his 24th Premier League season and is 16 appearances away from breaking Gareth Barry's all-time record. The three-time Premier League winner never thought about giving up despite his lengthy spell on the sidelines."I wouldn't say there was dark times but there was frustrating times," he added."There was times where I'd get to five or six weeks constantly then needed a break for two or three days, just a change of scenery to regain the focus and the intensity."I wouldn't say I got too down about it. There is the determination to get back and try and contribute and help the manager and club move forward. I want to have a more positive season this time round."
