‘Both great people': Friends grapple with discovery of sunken boat, two bodies found in Cape Cod Bay

Friends of a Cape Cod couple are grappling with the news of two bodies found and a sunken boat located on the ocean floor. Shawn Arsenault, 64, and his girlfriend, Felicia Daley, 54, left Rock Harbor in Orleans Sunday to go clamming in a 30-foot vessel called 'Seahorse'. The harbormaster noticed Arsenault's truck still in the parking lot on Tuesday morning, and an intensive search began. A recreational vessel dragging its fishing gear spotted the wreckage Wednesday afternoon two miles off the coast of Brewster. Authorities brought the remains of two people to shore in Dennis hours later. 'They were both great people,' said friend Patrick McLaughlin. 'He was a loud character with his jokes, and she would do anything to help you out.' Authorities had not formally identified the bodies found as of Wednesday night. However, friends said they didn't need official confirmation to grasp the tragic outcome. 'They were just going out to make a few dollars. The ocean said, no, not today,' said friend Scott Amerault. Amerault told Boston 25 News Daley held a special place in his heart ever since they went to Nauset Regional High School together. 'She will always be remembered,' he said. 'Heart of gold but salty as hell.' Witnesses on land told the Coast Guard they potentially saw items, including a GPS, being thrown overboard before the boat went missing. Those accounts are adding to speculation about what happened. 'We like to stress that mariners file voyage plans with loved ones so somebody knows where you're going and how long you're going to be out for,' said Lt. Quinn LeCain with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector SE New England. State and federal agencies are now working together to figure out how to handle the underwater wreck. They're looking into factors like how much fuel is on board and whether there's a threat to the environment. Download the FREE Boston 25 News app for breaking news alerts. Officials investigate after 2 bodies found with missing boat Seahorse off Cape Cod

The Seahorse is captained by Shawn Arsenault, the Officials did not identify the two people whose bodies were recovered. They said next of kin were notified. 'Our hearts go out to the families of both persons onboard,' Commander Cliff Graham, search and rescue mission coordinator for the case, said in a statement. Advertisement 'The level of support from our maritime response partners and members from the fishing and local community was remarkable,' Graham's statement said. 'It directly contributed to detection of the vessel and closure for the family.' A recreational fisherman spotted the 30-foot white-hulled vessel while trolling near the search area, according to the statement. A Coast Guard cutter named William Sparling, which had been searching overnight, arrived at the scene within 30 minutes, and divers from Massachusetts Environmental Police and State Police identified the boat. The office of Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois is investigating. 'This matter remains under active investigation,' community outreach coordinator Katie Green told the Globe on Wednesday. She said the district attorney's office could not comment further. Advertisement Seahorse was two days overdue from a fishing trip in Cape Cod Bay when the search began Tuesday morning. The harbormaster in Orleans initiated the search. The boat was last believed to be two miles off Chatham, where it was placed by a cell phone ping, according to a social media post by the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England. Seahorse has a gold mermaid figure on the bow, and 'SEAHORSE' painted on the stern in rough lettering, officials said. The Seahorse was docked in Orleans harbor last week, according to kayaker Daniel Moniz, who said in an email he noted the boat's distinctive mermaid. The vessel was known to fish in the area near Billingsgate Shoals, and usually returned the same day, according to the Coast Guard's statement. The harbormaster in Orleans became concerned after seeing the owner's truck at the marina two days later, the statement said. The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast Tuesday morning to notify the public of the emergency, and launched Stations Chatham, Cape Cod Canal, and Provincetown to search the fishing area within Cape Cod Bay, the statement said. Search efforts also focused on the location of the last known cell phone ping from the owner's phone, two miles offshore from Chatham, officials said. On Wednesday, a Coast Guard plane and a State Police helicopter joined the search effort. Prior Globe reporting contributed to this report. Claire Thornton can be reached at

Missing fishing boat found underwater off the coast of Cape Cod

It's a tragic ending to a search that had been ongoing this week, the sunken white hulled Seahorse was spotted about two miles off Brewster beaches by a recreational boater just before 2:00 Wednesday afternoon. Shawn Arsenault, 64, left his slip at Rock Harbor marina in Orleans Sunday morning to go clamming with his girlfriend. "He's been a fisherman all his life. He's ran many boats from New Bedford to Provincetown," said his brother Paul Arsenault. "He told me he wasn't coming back until he got his 30-bag limit." That usually takes only a day, but when his white Ford pickup truck was still in the marina parking lot two days later it raised concerns, including reports of unusual behavior the day he left the harbor. "The fact that he didn't come in with the tide that evening wasn't necessarily alarming. The curious part was that the day he left the harbor he was discarding waste off the side of the boat," said Orleans Harbormaster Nathan Sears. Discarded radar dome, GPS That waste included a radar dome, and a GPS found on a nearby beach. The harbormaster says his boat had recently been running rough, but repairs seemed to put him back in business. Now an investigation into how the thirty-foot fishing vessel Seahorse went down will answer many questions. Photo of the missing 30 foot fishing boat Seahorse. U.S. Coast Guard "These are quahog draggers, they're dragging big steel cages behind the boats. If they get hung up on the bottom, especially if you're fishing in the dark, they can roll the side of the boat and go down pretty fast," said Sears. The empty slip at the marina has been an eerie sight this week, and neighbors at his Orleans housing complex say they've been shaken by the news. "The community has been reaching out, giving hugs and saying prayers. We all just miss him so terribly," said Melissa Phillips. Arsenault's brother says his concern has grown by the minute and had this worry all along. "I'm beginning to think I'll never see my brother again," he said.

Fisherman and girlfriend vanish without a trace after he hurled equipment off boat then sailed onto Cape Cod

A frantic manhunt is entering its fourth day after a Massachusetts fisherman was reportedly seen throwing equipment overboard before he and his girlfriend vanished without a trace. Shawn Arsenault, 64, and his partner Felicia Daley, 54, set off from Rock Harbor in Orleans, about 100 miles east of Newport, on Saturday. Locals reported to the Coast Guard that Arsenault was seen tossing electronic equipment into the water before leaving the Harbor. The couple had planned to go clamming near the Target Ship Wreck in Cape Cod Bay aboard their 30-foot white fishing boat, which features a painted mermaid on the bow and its name 'Seahorse' scrawled across the stern. But they never returned. The first sign something was wrong when locals reported to the Sunday morning when local resident Sam Miller and her father spotted a critical clue while walking along the beach. 'I noticed in the surf there was something floating, so I went down to see what it was, and it turned out to be a GPS unit off of a boat,' she told CBS Boston. 'We could tell it was a GPS unit off a boat... it had blue tape on it that said 'F/V Seahorse.' The Millers tried to return the device by leaving a note on Arsenault's nearby pickup truck in Rock Harbor. But when they returned Monday and saw the truck still unmoved, they alerted the harbormaster - who quickly contacted the Coast Guard. The frantic manhunt for a missing Massachusetts couple is entering its fourth day as the Coast Guard is investigating Officials say weather likely wasn't a factor in the disappearance, although search efforts have been hampered by fog and thunderstorms. 'We activated the Cape Cod Mutual Response System,' Coast Guard Commander Cliff Graham told CBS, noting visibility had been poor. 'Up today we are under a small craft advisory. Our search efforts are a little diminished because of the weather.' Authorities said a cellphone believed to be on board last pinged roughly two miles offshore from Chatham. Coast Guard Lt. Quinn LeCain confirmed reports that Arsenault was seen tossing items overboard shortly after departing. 'We received reports that he was seen throwing electronic equipment overboard,' LeCain said in an email to CBS. 'We can't confirm what exactly was thrown... there was a Facebook comment saying that it was his old GPS.' Now, as search crews scour the waters of Cape Cod Bay, Arsenault's family is fearing the worst. 'I really don't know what to think or feel right now,' his brother told WCVB. 'The boat was just checked out by his mechanic, he said everything was A-OK. 'He just got a new radar, a fish finder, and he was all excited about that. 'He got it all hooked up. He said he was going not coming home until he has his 30 bags.' He added a heartbreaking message to his brother: 'You're in my prayers, brother. I hope God takes care of you.' Anyone with information about the Seahorse or its occupants is urged to contact the Sector Southeastern New England command center at 866-819-9128.
