Zip World ‘Could Be Catalyst for Tourism-Led Regeneration in South Wales Valleys'
Zip World at Tower Colliery could be the catalyst for regeneration based on tourism in the South Wales Valleys. Founder Sean Taylor told the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) podcast that the business has 'big plans' for the site, which was the oldest continually-working coal mine in the UK until 2008. Around 700,000 visitors head to Zip World's North Wales sites each year, and Sean said that he wants to see the same levels of visitor interest at their South Wales location in Aberdare. In 2020 Zip World secured a £4.4 million repayable loan from CCR which accelerated the creation of the Zip World Tower adventure site at the iconic Tower Colliery. The loan was repaid early this year when Zip World secured a majority investment from direct equity investor Dolphin Capital. In 2024, an independent report from North Wales Tourism revealed Zip World had contributed £941 million to the Welsh economy over the last decade. The business also achieved B Corp Certification, making it one of only 18 other adventure tourism B Corp-certified organisations worldwide. Now Sean has spoken about his ambitions for Zip World at Tower Colliery to be the catalyst for a far wider regeneration which would capitalise on the connectivity offered by the Heads of the Valleys road, drawing visitors from along the M5 corridor and encouraging more people to spend time – and money – in the Northern Valleys. The site currently employs around 80 people, with plans to expand the offer further to include accommodation and indoor attractions. Sean said the long-term aim is to create a year-round destination that helps retain local talent and supports the wider community. 'I want local young people to have the opportunity to stay where they live, earn a decent wage, and build a future,' he said. 'If Zip World and Tower Colliery can help with that, then that's what we want to do.' The Zip World Tower project is an example of CCR's wider placemaking strategy, with a focus on investing in post-industrial sites in a way that benefits local communities while unlocking economic potential. Councillor Anthony Hunt, Leader of Torfaen County Borough Council and Vice Chair of CCR, said: 'We're not trying to bring back the past – we want to build a better future. Taking a site with such iconic history and transforming it into something for the next generation is hugely important.' Anthony said CCR views its role as a catalyst, working with ambitious businesses that are already rooted in Wales to help them grow. 'It's not just about direct jobs,' he added. 'There are wider benefits to the local supply chain and visitor economy too.' CCR Chief Executive Kellie Beirne described Zip World Tower as a strong example of the organisation's evergreen investment model, where loans and investments generate returns that can be reinvested in future projects. 'The money we get back goes into the pot to support the next opportunity,' she said. 'That reinvestment model is a central part of how we operate, and it helps us build long-term resilience in the regional economy.' Kellie said CCR's approach is about enabling growth not just through direct business support but also by strengthening the infrastructure around it – from digital connectivity and energy supply to accommodation and integrated ticketing. She confirmed that discussions are under way with hotel operators and tourism partners to help strengthen the area's wider visitor offer. CCR's £50 million Northern Valleys initiative, developed in partnership with the Welsh Government, aims to support additional regeneration activity across the Heads of the Valleys corridor, capitalising on and bringing together key assets such as Big Pit, BikePark Wales and the World Heritage landscape around Blaenavon. Kellie said the ambition now is to build on what's already in place. 'The region has huge potential,' she said. 'Our role is to bring the right partners together and ensure that investment continues to flow into the places where it can have the greatest long-term impact.' Case dismissed against suspect in Albuquerque bosque fire
Jun. 27—Prosecutors have dismissed charges against a man accused of setting a bosque fire in Albuquerque last weekend after a grand jury found a lack of probable cause, according to documents filed in 2nd Judicial District Court on Friday. "The State of New Mexico, through its Deputy District Attorney ... dismissed this case because the Grand Jury did not find probable cause," according to the motion to dismiss. A spokesperson for the District Attorney's Office declined to comment. An Albuquerque police spokesperson also declined to comment. Police arrested Sean Taylor, 45, on Saturday, June 21, after a witness told officers that Taylor left the bosque with a lighter in his hand near the Alameda Bridge around the time a fire was set in the area. A pretrial detention motion was filed Wednesday to keep Taylor detained until trial. Judge David Murphy granted the motion. "The defendant created a substantial risk to the public by starting a fire in the Rio Grande bosque," according to the motion to detain. "There will be no assurances that the defendant does not go near the bosque or other areas at risk of fire." "Moreover, the defendant will have easy access to matches, lighters and other implements that can start a fire," the motion said. "The community will remain at risk if the defendant is released." Taylor denied starting the fire to police, telling them he had a lighter in his backpack, according to court records. Taylor told officers he saw a man dropping ashes from a piece of burnt paper. The blaze was one of four that happened between June 16 and 19 in the riverside forest in Albuquerque. Officials have said the fires were human-caused.

Antrim squeeze through to Tailteann Cup knockout stages
Antrim are through to the knockout phase of the Tailteann Cup after their eight-point win over London in Newry proved enough to secure one of the best third-place spots in the draw for the preliminary quarter-finals. It was a close-run affair for three quarters of the match, but a black card for London's Matt Moynahan was a prelude to a run of 1-04 without reply. That proved crucial. With Leitrim beating Tipperary in Group 1, it came down to scoring difference to see which of those teams advanced. Antrim got off the mark with Ryan McQuillan kicking points off either foot, but London grew into it as Daniel Clarke pointed and, after a great save by Antrim goalkeeper Mick Byrne from Ciarán Diver, the ball came back to Joshua Obahor to level. Diver edged his side into the lead before Conal Gallagher slung over the first two-pointer of the game, while Byrne was again called into action to save from Ruairi Rafferty with the subsequent '45' nailed by Sean Taylor. McQuillan replied but Liam Gallagher sent over another two for London who were five points up before Antrim began to make some inroads with scores from Conor Stewart and Paddy McBride. Diver and Shay Rafter restored the five-point gap, but after Stewart pulled one back, Antrim really ought to have had a goal in added time when London goalkeeper Andrew Walsh seemed to flp at the ball. Ryan Murray was twice denied the opportunity to turn home and London went into the break with a 0-10 to 0-06 advantage. It was level within minutes of the restart as McBride and Dominic McEnhill landed two-pointers with the wind at their backs. It remained tight, a Conor Hand two briefly giving Antrim the lead for the first time before Obahor levelled it again. The sides remained level going into the final quarter when Antrim struck for home as points from Ada Loughran and Ryan Murray were followed by a Byne '45', which came after McEnhill's 56th-minute penalty was saved, Matt Moynahan getting sin-binned in the process. By the time he returned, the game was beyond his team as Antrim had gone nine clear with substitute Niall Burns finding the net despite the best efforts of Sean Taylor. Shay Rafter thumped to the net from a free in added time, which saw eyes divert to the Leitrim-Tipp score, but late points from Marc Jordan and Dominic McEnhill were enough to see Antrim home and into the knockout phase. Antrim: Michael Byrne (0-01 '45'); Eoghan McCabe, Eunan Walsh, Kavan Keenan; James McAuley, Dermot McAleese, Marc Jordan (0-01); Conor Hand (0-02, 1 tp), Conor Stewart (0-02); Ronan Boyle, Adam Loughran (0-01), Patrick McBride (0-03, 1 tp); Ryan McQuillan (0-04), Ryan Murray (0-01), Dominic McEnhill (0-06, 2 tp, 2f). Subs: Niall Burns (1-01) for A Loughran (52), John Morgan for J McAuley (70+1), James McDonnell for R Boyle (70+1) London: Andrew Walsh; Daire Rooney, Sean Taylor (0-01 '45'), Matt Moynahan; Eoin Walsh, Conal Gallagher (0-02, 1 tp), Kristian Healy; Tighe Barry, Liam Gallagher (0-02, 1 tp); Joshua Obahor (0-02), Daniel Clarke (0-01), Ciaran Diver (0-03); Ruairi Rafferty, Nathan McElwaine, Shay Rafter (1-02, 1-01f).

Corpus Christi police arrest man in connection with shooting involving car clubs
Corpus Christi police arrested a man who they say shot a gun at a group of people in an incident involving a gathering of car clubs on May 18. Detectives with the Corpus Christi Police Department Criminal Investigations Division obtained a warrant for aggravated assault as part of a mass shooting for 21-year-old Sean Taylor, according to a news release published by Corpus Christi Police Department senior officer Jennifer Collier on May 21. According to the detectives' preliminary investigation, a group of people belonging to different car clubs gathered on May 18 in the 100 block of Shoreline Boulevard when, for unknown reasons, some of them began shooting at each other. Police responded at about 4:40 a.m. that day to a call at a local hospital in reference to two people who went into a hospital with gunshot wounds after the shooting. One of those men was an 18-year-old whom police have not identified. The other was Taylor. Police said earlier that the men were in stable condition after the shooting. Detectives obtained the warrant for Taylor's arrest because they found that he had shot a gun toward a group of four or more people in an attempt to cause serious bodily injury or death, police said. A local hospital cleared Taylor, and police arrested him for the outstanding warrant on May 20. He was transported and booked into the City Detention Center. A judge set his bond at $750,000. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Police encourage anyone with information to call detectives at 361-886-2840.
