‘Severance' dominates Emmy field: Here's every category where it scored an Emmy nomination — and everywhere it was snubbed
The innies and the outies will be partying at the Emmys. Severance avoided the sophomore slump in a major way, riding its meme-tastic Season 2 to an Emmy-dominating 27 nominations on Tuesday, including a bid for Best Drama Series, and nine acting nods. Entering Emmy season as the show to beat, per the Gold Derby odds, the Apple TV+ series was widely expected not only to improve upon the 14 nominations it garnered in its first season but to challenge last year's nomination champ, Shōgun. In the end, Severance eclipsed the Japanese period drama by two nods and fell just short of Game of Thrones' all-time mark of 32. More from Gold Derby 'The Bear' serves up 13 Emmy nominations and one surprising snub 2025 Emmys outrage: Why your favorite genre shows like 'Outlander,' 'Interview With the Vampire,' and 'Squid Game' were snubbed Here's a look at every category where Severance scored — and everywhere it was snubbed. READ: 'Holy sh-t, this is like 'Star Wars'': The ultimate oral history of 'Severance' Season 2 No surprise here. Severance has been tops in the Gold Derby odds for Best Drama since we began tracking the odds for this year's Emmys. The real drama is whether Severance can go wire-to-wire in field that includes Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pitt, Slow Horses, and The White Lotus. Adam Scott is now 2-for-2 with Best Actor noms. His tour-de-force performance in the season finale, in which his deuling Mark Scouts confront each other in an awkward, tense negotiation via videocamera, makes him one of the favorites here, in what's expected to be a tight race with The Pitt's Noah Wyle. Britt Lower's breakout season — in which she ping-ponged between the rebellious Helly R. and the conniving Helena Eagan — was justly acknowledged with her first Emmy nomination. Her reward: facing off in a stacked race that includes Kathy Bates (Matlock), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), and Keri Russell (The Diplomat). Here is the toughest math problem for Severance — and its chief rival in the category, The White Lotus. Both had more worthy contenders than available slots. Severance was hoping to land four actors in supporting: repeat A-list nominees John Turturro (Irving) and Christopher Walken (Burt), both of whom had reduced roles in Season 2, and Tramell Tillman (Milchick) and Zach Cherry (Dylan), both of whom were revelations as their characters enjoyed more prominence. In the end, the show settled for a trio of nods, with Turturro landing his second consecutive bid, while Tillman and Cherry each scored their first. Tillman and Cherry also both have a legitimate shot to become the first Black actor to win in this category. As expected, Patricia Arquette locked down her second Emmy nomination for playing Harmony Cobel on Severance. However, Severance was looking for a two-fer here, with Dichen Lachman, whose Gemma/Ms. Casey was the focal point of Season 2, on the bubble. She was ultimately squeezed out of a crowded field that also included The White Lotus' Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, and Aimee Lou Wood, along with Katherine LaNasa (The Pitt), and Julianne Nicholson (Paradise). Here the one acting category where Severance is on the outside looking in. The three hopefuls — Robby Benson as Dr. Mauer, the Lumon lackey experimenting on Lachman's Gemma; John Noble as Fields Goodman, Burt's husband who's jealous of his innie's relationship with Irving; and Michael Siberry as Helena's egg-loving father, Jame Eagan — didn't hear their names called. Guest actress is a different story. The Emmy ballot found room for three new Severance cast members: Gwendoline Christie (a one-time nominee for Game of Thrones) as the scene-stealing goatherd Lorne; two-time Emmy winner Merritt Wever as Outie Dylan's conflicted wife, and, in a bit of a surprise, two-time Emmy winner Jane Alexander as Harmony's estranged aunt, Sissy Cobel. The one Severance actress who wasn't able to crack the field was Sydney Cole Alexander, aka Lumon loyalist Natalie Kalen. Another repeat nominee, series mastermind Dan Erickson picked up the expected nod for writing "Cold Harbor," the jaw-dropping season finale that includes the Mark vs. Mark showdown, Milchick's unhinged Choreography and Merriment moment, and that oh-so-heartbreaking climax to the Mark-Gemma-Helly love triangle. "Cold Harbor" also delivered a second Best Directing nod for Ben Stiller, who has helmed 11 of the show's 19 episodes over two seasons. He's joined by Jessica Lee Gagné, the show's cinematographer, who netted a nomination in her directing debut, for Episode 7, "Chikhai Bardo." Severance's 2022 Emmy nomination haul included casting, main title theme music, main title design, music composition, picture editing (two bids), and production design. Because the theme music didn't change, the series couldn't compete there, but it did repeat in the other categories, and even added a third bid in picture editing. Severance also added nominations in several craft categories, including cinematography, music supervision, sound editing, sound mixing, stunts, and visual effects. However, it missed out in costumes, hairstyling, and makeup. 'The Pitt' star's reps deny she was fired over 'gay exorcisms' church
News that Tracy Ifeachor wouldn't be returning to season two of The Pitt came as a shock to fans last week. But the drama that's now surrounding her exit to say the least. Multiple outlets reported the news that Ifeachor wouldn't be reprising her role as Dr. Heather Collins in the HBO Max medical drama, with TV Line citing sources claiming the decision was "a creative one," rather than Ifeachor leaving of her own accord. Although there are plenty of instances where a character is written off for narrative reasons with no sordid story behind the actor's departure, "creative differences" has long been a catch-all in Hollywood for "something happened and we're not going to talk about it publicly." This led to fans digging into Ifeachor's social media and realizing she has ties to a controversial megachurch in the UK known as Jesus House. Pink News reported in 2021 that Jesus House has been subject to accusations that it performs "gay exorcisms," though its pastor has denied those claims and said the church does "not engage in any form of conversion therapy" and is not "anti-anyone." However, as anyone intimately familiar with religion knows, careful wording and hedging leaves a lot of space, and PinkNews pulled further receipts at the time calling up the pastor's previous campaigning against LGBTQ+ rights and the church's somewhat more recent comparisons of homosexuality to bestiality. With Ifeachor's exit being as unexpected as it was, some fans started wondering if her religious affiliation, perhaps, played into things. One rumor suggested that she hadn't wanted to partake in the abortion storyline the way it was written, while other people were just focused on the whole "gay exorcisms" bit. — (@) "finding tracy ifeachor is part of a mega church that does exorcisms on gay people was not on my 2025 bingo card" — (@) "Me on the set of The Pitt making direct eye contact with Tracy Ifeachor:" — (@) "tracy ifeachor when she saw all the ships of her w other pitt women" — (@) "Would you rather have a Scientology son or whatever the fuck Tracy Ifeachor is involved in daughter. You cannot kill yourself" Ifeachor's reps caught wind of the social media storm and put out a statement claiming that the actress's beliefs have nothing to do with why she left the show and that she's, like, nice to gay people and stuff. "These claims are entirely false. First, Tracy was not fired. Dr. Heather Collins was simply not written in as a part of Season 2, which is a creative decision that has been confirmed by HBO," they told The Mirror US. "This gossip could not be further from the truth. She is a woman who leads with love, kindness, and compassion, and as her very gay publicist, I can say that I see this daily, firsthand." Unfortunately, as we all know, someone having gay friends doesn't stop them from having homophobic viewpoints, let alone being affiliated with organizations that have homophobic stances, whether or not they share them. Having played a lesbian pirate also doesn't prevent homophobia. On the flip side, a number of people who attend anti-gay churches don't necessarily agree with those beliefs, and some aren't even aware of them at all. from popculturechat Potential ignorance isn't really a great excuse for associating with a possibly harmful organization, but it does leave us in the dark as to where Ifeachor actually stands personally — and what the real reason behind her exit from The Pitt might be.
