Perimeter surveys completed on over 1.2 mln ha NCR land as of April 30, says Awang Tengah
Land and Survey Department personnel conduct an NRC land perimeter survey in Sri Aman. — Bernama file photo KUCHING (May 28): A total area of approximately 1,200,766 ha or 2,967,093 acres of the Native Customary Rights (NCR) land have been successfully surveyed by perimeter under the New Initiative NCR Land Survey Programme from October 2010 until April 30 this year. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said from that figure, around 935,760 ha or 2,312,263 acres have been gazetted as Bumiputera Communal Reserve (Agriculture) under Section 6 of the Sarawak Land Code. 'These surveying works are conducted based on applications from the relevant parties. 'Since 2017, the focus has also included the surveying of individual lots for the issuance of land titles under Section 18, specifically in gazetted areas, based on applications and the readiness of the claimants. 'As of April 30, 2025, a total of 99,438 individual lots covering 118,749 ha or 293,429 acres have been successfully surveyed, and land titles have been or will be issued under Section 18,' he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today. He said to expedite the surveying of individual NCR land lots, claimants must be present during fieldwork, clearly mark their land boundaries, and avoid disputes to ensure a smoother process. 'The Sarawak government is committed to ensuring the continuity of this programme and will continue to allocate the necessary funding, in addition to funds received from the federal government,' added Awang Tengah. NCR land surveys to continue for valid claims, says Deputy Premier
Awang Tengah (seated, fourth left) and others in a photo call with the title recipients. Seated at second and third left are Iskandar and Chukpai, respectively. BINTULU (May 15): Perimeter surveys of Native Customary Rights (NRC) land will continue for as long as needed but only for landowners who present valid legal evidence and consent to the process, said Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan. The Deputy Premier said the Sarawak government is committed to the NCR survey initiative, but stressed that surveys will not proceed if ownership disputes remain unresolved or if the matter is still before the courts. 'If any dispute exists, especially if a case is still in court, the survey will not proceed unless the legal action is withdrawn and a new application is submitted. 'The government has always recognised NCR land, not just recently but since the 1960s. What we're doing now is building on that commitment with better processes,' he said during a land title handover ceremony here today. He clarified that the survey process is conducted in two stages: perimeter survey and individual lot survey. He added that since 2010, more than 1.2 million hectares—nearly three million acres—have been surveyed under this initiative. 'However, rapid development in rural areas has triggered a rise in disputes, overlapping claims, and tension among communities. 'That's why the government stepped in to expedite the surveying process, reduce conflict, and ensure everyone's rights are protected,' he said, urging claimants not to blame the government if surveys cannot proceed due to unresolved internal conflicts. 'If it's truly your land and you have proof, submit an application. The government will assess it fairly. But if it's not your land, don't make false claims.' He also addressed concerns about Section 6 documents which were often misconstrued by the public. 'Some say (Sarawak Land Code) Section 6 documents do not prove ownership. If you don't believe in it, return the document. But to date, no one has,' he said. Awang Tengah added that once a perimeter survey is completed and ownership verified, landowners can apply for land titles under Section 18, which offer perpetual ownership, exemption from premium charges, and no land tax. 'This is the government's promise to the people. As long as the moon and stars remain, the land remains yours,' he said. Also present at the handover ceremony were Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee and Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon. Awang Tengah Land Survey ncr land

Jail time, fine await national service no-shows, trainees warned
The failure of trainees to report for national service training without a valid reason is a punishable offence. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The defence ministry has reminded individuals selected for the national service training programme (PLKN) that those who do not show up without a valid reason could be punished with jail time and a fine. The ministry's national service department said trainees must report to the PLKN camp by 12pm tomorrow, as stated in their call-up letters. 'Failure to report for duty without a valid reason, or evidence of health issues confirmed by a medical expert, is considered as defying orders,' it said in a statement. The department added that those who disobey orders can be punished under Section 18(1) of the National Service Training Act, which provides for a maximum RM3,000 fine, up to six months in prison, or both, if convicted. It added that inciting or persuading trainees to not show up for PLKN is also an offence under Section 19(2) of the Act, also punishable by a maximum fine of RM3,000, up to six months in prison, or both, upon conviction. Earlier this week, there were reports that 206 PLKN trainees failed to show up at their respective camps on Monday. They have until 12pm tomorrow to report in. Last Sunday, it was reported that male trainees are based at the 505 Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan, Pahang, and female trainees at the 515 Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Kuala Lumpur. PLKN is being gradually reintroduced in its third iteration to foster patriotism, unity and personal resilience among Malaysian youth, while equipping them with the physical and mental fortitude to face life's challenges.
